PS3 Stuttering / momentary freezing

Just picked up PN2 for the PS3, and I'm getting a LOT of slowdown and stuttering in the game that's making it really unpleasant to play. Also, during an auto-save, It froze my system for the duration of the save process, causing an audio scratch while it was happening. Is there some way to alleviate this?

Having the same issue here on my PS3. I own the game on Steam also, and haven't see the same issue there. Anybody have an idea of what's going on?

Do you have PS+ and have cloud saves active?
  • edited May 2013
Yes, I do, both PS+ and Cloud Saves.
  • edited May 2013
While I have the option to Cloud save, I don't usually do it.

What happens to me is that either the game will momentarily freeze or begin to stutter during the saving process. I get the impression that the game can't properly progress until certain information is saved, so it either slows down or loops a bit.

Thanks for responding Matt. I also have PS+ and cloud saves enabled.

Not certain if this is the direction you are headed in, but PS+ cloud saves are not real time. You setup your PS3 to upload the saves at a certain time. For example, mine is setup to upload between 4-6am. Hoping that helps somewhat.

I unfortunately don't have PS+ and have the same problem. also deleted and redownloaded and had same problems still.

Some hitching is normal during the save process, however we did not encounter regular slowdowns like you are specifying. You can try to Restore the File System and Rebuild the Database, which is especially helpful if you are running low on hard drive space. You can also try turning off dynamic themes or reinstalling the game content (your save should remain intact). Also, try to avoid skipping cutscenes or rapidly pressing buttons between hands. It is possible to experience the occassional long hitch or crash, more so during extended play times, but there's likely another underlying factor if these hitches occur regularly.

While I understand that you may not have had these issues, I along with other people have and issue with major stuttering and a lot of momentary freezing.
I have had no problems with other games, including Back to the Future and the Walking Dead, and am annoyed and disappointed in this Telltale release.
I have tried many of the things that you suggested, other than the file system rebuild, and think that if many people are having the same problem (google shows many complaints for both console versions of the game) it should be looked into more than a "well if it doesn't happen for us, then it must not be OUR game that is the problem."
I came to the official forums looking for help and found more frustration instead.

This pausing/freezing thing happens to me after every single hand. The Saving dialogue box appears on the lower right corner of the screen and the onscreen action freezes and the audio loops for a few seconds.

When it's really bad, the whole game will freeze but the system is still active because I can access the XMB. I find by waiting the few seconds for the game to save and then proceeding with the next hand helps but it's still very annoying.

Matt, I just bought the game two hours ago and I'm experiencing massive stuttering, skipping, and what really REALLY made me mad was I was about two hands away from FINALLY winning my first tournament and the game froze. Completely. Tried to quit the game and my system crashed and reset itself. Just read your suggestions and I I gotta throw in my two cents...

I have 78GB of free space on my system. Having only a 1.5MB internet connection, the LAST thing I want to do is file restore and have to wait the weeks it's take to re-download the 70+GB of data I would need to recover. Not Happening.

Secondly, why is the game skipping, crashing, freezing, in the first place? Why are there hitches? Shouldn't they be, you know, non-existent?

Ok, tried to play the game on two different PS3 units. One unit is less than 2 weeks old. The other is the unit I originally mentioned, but after the DB rebuild you suggested. I'm getting the same issue still on both. On the newer PS3, I'm also experiencing game crashes as geomon19 mentioned. I can still go to the XMB and even quit out of the frozen game, but the game itself will not come back.

This is super annoying. PS3 is my platform of choice. As I mentioned before, I've played it on Steam and never ran into issues like this. Beyond that, I can watch my roommate play it on his 360 without any apparent issues (definitely not the lag/stutter). Please help us out here.

That just happened twice to me tonight. Game freezes but the background audio and music keeps going. Also I have a 500GB new slim model PS3 that I got back in October, still have over 250GB of free space on it.
  • edited May 2013
Mine is only a 160GB model, but if anything is apparent here, these issues are happening all across the Sony board (at least from what I can tell from previous replies).

I've had the same problems, plus as an added bonus on two occasions now I had folded, once the game decided to unfreeze I was told I had been eliminated from play. (despite having 19,000 in chips)

Any updates on this? Anybody figure a way around it?

I know this isn't an issue for me, given the fact that I have over 350GB of free space on my PS3's HDD.

Hope there's a TTG patch in the works, because everything else you have suggested doesn't do a bit of good to help it run any better than it currently does.

As an update to the problem, any extended periods of play (2+ hours ?) of the game will bring my PS3 to lock and restart.

TTG, I play TONS of games. This isn't my console...

I'm not playing this game again until there's a big patch to fix these issues. As I type this, the game just froze on me again. This is just sad.

First off, I apologize for making a post about this here in the support section. I didn't realize there was a existing post or else I would of posted it here. I've had the game stutter on me all the time and it's frozen about 5 times now. It's very annoying and I regret not trying to demo before purchasing. I'm now at the point where I refuse to even play it because it's more of a annoyance than any kind of enjoyment.

Also made a video of one such freeze: http://youtube.com/watch?v=WSMkjKOZRiM

I've registered for these forums just to report this issue.

I have not been able to play this game at all. I've done a restore of the file system, and this did not help. I can get to the main menu (it's slow, but it works) but when I attempt to start a new tournament the "Loading..." text appears in the bottom right hand corner, then slows, and then stops.

It wil either remain there for three or four minutes, then revert back to the main menu but with no options to select, or sit there until I tire of waiting for it and have to restart my PS3.

I have attempted to play seven (7) times today, and have been unsuccessful every time. I have never experienced any issues even remotely like this with any other games. I have a lot of spare space on the hard drive, and I'm not prepared to accept that my problem is unique to my machine as everywhere this game is mentioned on PS3 the same issues are arising time and again.

I would very much appreciate this being looked into, as at present I have paid you for something that is utterly useless to me, and entirely unfit for purpose. It simply does not work.

Couldn't of said it better myself. What bothers me the most is Telltale hasn't even officially came out and said that it is a problem. That's a easy way to lose fans.

Every single person and I do mean every single person I know who purchased this on PS3 (mostly friends of mine who bought it for BL2 unlocks) have told me that they're having the exact same problems and for a lot of them this is their first TT game so it's not going to leave a good taste in their mouth if they ever have the decision to purchase another game by the same company.

Come on Telltale at least say something or better yet do something.

EDIT: After doing some more reading this seems to be pretty common on the Xbox release as well.

    I have a PS3 FAT with a fast 750 GB HDD.
I have over 150+ Games for this system and I can say that bugs, glitches and crashes are extremely rare.
However, this game is by far the worst piece of software I ever downloaded for my PS3. There is constant stuttering! Every time the game saves the game comes to a complete halt for about 2-10 seconds, often with the sound looping.
Once, the game stopped responding, when it displayed the "press X for next round" (not the actual text, but I think you know what I mean) message. When I quit the game and tried to continue the tournament after restarting, the freeze was still there because the bug was stored in the save game.

Seriously, how can you release such a piece of crap????
It's really frustrating, because I really would like to enjoy this game!

I just started playing today and within 5 minutes I had a 30 second hang. I thought the whole PS3 (old fat system, with 500 GB 5400 RPM drive) had locked up, but then it started up as if nothing happened. It happened again the next round, though only for about 10 seconds that time.

Once Brock was eliminated it seemed to get better. I think the problem is saving combined with trying to load banter at the same time.

This is apparently very common and it's mentioned in PlayStation LifeStyle's review of the game and the reason it got a low score.

We've been looking into this issue and found a few ways you may be able to eleviate some of the hitching.

Try waiting for the 'Saving' icon to disappear before betting on the next hand. Also, once another character is eliminated from the tournament, performance improves. Knocking out another character will nearly eliminate all hitching. Lastly, restarting the game from time to time will also help to avoid hard locks or crashes that require the system to be rebooted.

While these suggestions are not a solution, they should help to improve the performance of the game.

Is TellTale working on improving the performance of the game via a patch?

I find it hard to believe that this game is taxing the PS3 that much considering there are much more graphics and disk intensive games that don't have this problem.

Maybe it's just me but why in the world does it have to save after ever single hand? I don't know if you're part of the development team or not but that seems like something that isn't needed.

As for the problems being reduced when there are less players that's a possibility but it doesn't do enough to help. The last time it froze for me it was 1v1 me & ashley

EDIT: You can also see my Youtube video where it froze and it's only me and Claptrap. http://youtu.be/WSMkjKOZRiM

Indeed. I've also had my game lock up when there were only two players still playing in the tournament.

    To the developers.
I do not like to generally complain about games and spend a lot of money on them. I understand like any normal person the issues in a business and that people can never be happy. But what we have here is a product that in general does not work. If I bought a guitar where the strings were all broken I would expect new strings. Her din this game I would be embarrassed to be on the creating team. You are passing off people's comments on us having to try and fix things by rebuilding, re downloading, turn off dynamic themes, need more he'd space. These are all cop outs. You have a game that stutters, freezes every time the characters talk and hands are played to such an extent it is as if playing an online game with a very very low grade connection. It is just like I am lagging out yet.... ITS NOT EVEN ONLINE I have never had a game this bad and I though call of duty was the worst. At least they can play the server card what's your excuse. I really was thinking of buying walking dead and borderlands two but if this is your companies customer service or response to a problem to make people adapt and force changes when you should provide an update . That's like my broken guitar strings and being told use some duct tape. Simply put your game is offline and acts like a lagging online game there are deffinatly freeze issues as another along with lots of others who have tried your rediculouse fixes have found they have no affec. If you don't know why this issue exists please be honest with us and say so. The community just wishes for comunication and honesty. Not simple cop out excuses. Please figure it out and create an update , if your not willing too then I would like my money back as the game currently is psychologically aggravating to play, and hard as hell to see the characters tell AS IT IS DESIGNED TO DO and a simple game takes about 4 times longer, in poker this is rough, as a game it is broken, am simply whining about everything like happens a lot of times with game issues? NO I just wish to see some actually attempt to work in fixing what I think would be a great game and some Ho esty and humble acceptance to owning the problem not passing off the blame. In fact I should never have to ALTER my system. For your game in the first place. This is not. An answer. So please let's see an honest comment on what you all intend or I will e-mail to have my refund for a Brocken product
  • edited May 2013
I'm done buying anything TT related. I hate to be 'that guy' but this has seriously just pushed me off the edge. They're not doing anything or offering refunds and not even something simple such as a apology, nothing.

Like the person before I don't just complain about games in my free time for the fun of it. If I wanted to do that I'd go to the EA forums (zing!).

But no seriously, I'm pretty content with glitches and bugs if they're not game breaking or don't constantly interfere in gameplay. What we have here is BROKEN and we deserve a patch and a apology and since it's been two weeks that's not asking a lot.

I just wanted to post a +1 to the skipping issues on PS3. I don't know what is worse having a character set up a hilarious joke only to have the punchline never delivered or hearing the background music get stuck like a record when it is auto saving.
I have pretty much all TT games on PS3 and I WANT to love this product as well, but this is a pretty bad and apparently widespread PS3 problem.
  • edited May 2013
I played last night and at times when it froze I looked at the disk activity light on my PS3 and it wasn't flashing at all. It wasn't saving or loading, it was just sitting there for 10 seconds doing nothing.

Also there was one point during dialog where the video froze, but the audio kept going. Eventually the video unfroze and the video and audio were out of sync until the dialog ended.

Finally when I went to quit, the PS3 froze while quitting and did it's 3 beep reset.

The game really is coded poorly. I was watching the credits and saw all the QA people listed. They should all be fired.

    Edit:

Oddly after I got eliminated, I decided to watch the remaining 4 guys play. There was no lagging, freezing or stuttering at all at that point.
  • edited May 2013
i get the freezes too. also my boarderlands stuff doent show in shift codes. pretty much bought it just for that too
  • edited May 2013
I completely locked up last night after playing for a while. Well the game locked up, the PS3 didn't as I could quit from the PS3 screen, but the PS3 couldn't quit the game and I got 3 beeps.

What's worse is that apparently, even though the game saves after every hand, it's not saving the tournament state as when I launched the game again after this the only option I had was to start a new tournament, despite being several hands into the tournament.

I just bought this game for nearly £8.00 on the PSN. I am livid.

My game is also freezing and glitching, I was just in a show down with claptrap (just the two of us left) and I was doing pretty well and starting to enjoy it when it completely freezes up and I have to hard reset my PS3.

You are selling a product that does not function correctly. I am expecting a refund on this, I have sent you a message via twitter and facebook. I have never been so angry about a game purchase. This problem is wide spread and there have been no official updates apart from the chap above going...

"Oh yeah guys - thats an issue, why don't you try and wait a bit before playing the game" not even a... "We are working on this everyone and will have a patch out shortly"

I expect my refund because I work hard for my money and you have just sold me a product that does not work as advertised. You can contact me via email. I expect to hear from telltale soon or expect a patch within the coming week.

okay.... WTF TTG....... if the walking dead was messing up this bad an you fixed it the same day..... then you should fix this game the same day!!!!!! or you can do the right thing and refund all the psn members who post on here about this problem! I played it on my brothers xbox with no issues..... so if xbox can do so should we! fix it or refund!
  • My boyfriend used to be a QA Tester at THQ. I used to always blame testers for not catching major bugs, but he told me something about how the process of submitting patches works. Sometimes fixing minor bugs could cause other things to fail, so they generally don't worry about them. But the biggest reason that companies tend to not fix bugs is the cost. I can't quite remember the figures, but I think he said Microsoft charges $20,000 and Sony charges $10,000 per patch. This is why companies choose not to fix things at times.

  • I just bought this on my ps3 and it is still lagging and everything else mentioned. I love this game, I played it on the computer first and never had any issues. The person who let me use their steam account moved so i don't play it on the computer anymore, but when i saw that it was available on the ps3 i was excited until i started playing and the lagging started. please fix this bug but seeing as this has been a problem for over a year i don't see that happening, would there be any way i can get it on the pc for free since playing it on the ps3 is nothing but a joke? I'm not the kind of person to really complain but when i have to pay for something and there's a problem i would like to know that someone is gonna fix it or do something to keep me interested so i might consider buying again. Like i said i do love this game and would love to play it but with the lagging and other issues for the ps3 it makes it miserable playing the game.
