So what do you think. Reference or coincidence?

Noticed this too while watching a playthrough. I think it's a reference but reddit thinks otherwise.
  • edited June 2013
I actually saw this and was like "Hmmm... nahhhhhhh, no way." But now that I see it, it does look that way.
  • edited June 2013
Aw crap. I can't believe I didn't notice that before. Coincidence? I think not.
  • edited June 2013
I dunno, I think it's a little coincidential. There are a few architecture similarities, but not enough for me to think that the building is a reference from The Walking Dead.

Good job pointing it out though, I didn't notice during my playthoughs.

Well fuck me, I didn't notice that, thx for pointing out :D
  • edited June 2013
lol, it does look like a reference. Good find !

Wow never noticed this, I might have missed that house. Is this near the end of the Summer part of the game? I remember there being neighbourhoods with houses like that.

    Cool!

I will only believe it if there's a Coloring Book lying around somewhere with a Unicorn in it.

    i'll say it

the last of us is a total rip off of twd..

    man and girl check

    man has dodgy past check

    story elements / choices check

    'walkers' check

dodgy characters good and bad check

Nah, come on... The Last Of Us is just a totally different game genre. TWD: Survival Instinct is a rip off from the tv series.

You really shouldn't try to make a great game with its own ideas look bad. Won't work... ;)

Exactly how i felt. I completed the last of us, it seemed very simliar to the walking dead, not just cause of the infected and so on, just other things. When you play it you will see what i mean.

I saw this the other day too... Definitely not a coincidence. :D

They may be similar in some, maybe even many parts, but you may not forget that The Last of Us wasn't created in a year, but it definitely took longer, when it was started TWD S1E1 had most likely not been released, and most certainly no one knew just how succesfull the game would become. So calling it a rip off is far fetched. Man and girl, that's the first thing that catches your eye in both games, however all the other things? Merely coincidence, and not even that similar. Dodgy past? Not really, well kind of, but in a very different way than Lee's, Choices? Merely existing in The Last of Us, "walkers"? Now that's the biggest difference, there are no such creatures in The Last of Us, sorry but there is a big difference between infected/runners and zombies/walkers, let alone the different enemy types in The Last of Us. But well, I guess it doesn't take long for people to call one game a rip off, just because it was released later. The Last of Us was teased '11, Episode 1 was released '12, thus both developments were started somewhere around the same time.

Last of us = The walking dead 20 years later lol )))

    for the record i haven't played tlou as don't own a ps3..

so it was based on what i've seen read and the recent kotaku 'comparison'.
  • edited June 2013
Oh didn't know that, well yeah it seems very alike if you only get some impressions here and there, I guess.
  • edited June 2013
Obviously it has similarities. Heck, the Protagonists alone. Ellie is the second Clem. And seeing this is nothing but awesome. Both games can go along without a Problem imo.

She is not a second Clementine, and Joel is not a second Lee, to me at least I believe Clementine is just better, but maybe because she is nicer and younger and I maybe because I play THIS game first.

If this is a Easter egg then it is a great shout out to the best Zombie Game ever, if not then it's a missed opportunity.

I think it's more of a nod to the franchise as well the Telltale's game. I saw some interviews of the director of The Last of Us where he mentioned that they were inspired by these story driven comics/games and he specifically mentioned The Walking Dead. So I'm pretty sure it's a respectful nod to Lee and Clementine. :D

I did notice that house when I played TLOU but didn't think too much of it. But now I see ;)
  • edited July 2013
I believe it is a nod to the game and the series, I mean it might now the exactly the same but it is very close, to close to be a accident.
  • edited July 2013
Exactly what I think. That game stands on its own as a good game. So no harm done. Just one developer appreciating the work of another. As long as we get great games in the process :D I'm happy lol

If only that's how most people talked these days...
  • edited July 2013
looks absolutely nothing alike. Sorry but a lot of houses have a kitchen and a sliding door.
  • edited July 2013
Yeah I'm thinking it's just a coincidence. Treehouses, pools, sliding glass doors and kitchens are hardly unique features and considering the sheer number of houses you go through in The Last of Us, there was bound to be one like that.

More like a ripoff. TLOU is basically TTG's TWD with better graphics and a crappy story. TTG should sue the crap out of them...

TLOU was in production back in 2009. Just because it came out after TWD doesn't instantly make it a rip off. The level layouts were probably decided long before TWD came out.

And TLOU's story isn't 'crappy.' It's... I hate to say it, superior to TWD's in some aspects.

And this house is NOT a reference  it has the same basic layout but it looks completely different.
  • edited July 2013
They are similar but not the same, zombie games always have something that another game also has since all the innovation has been done before. I have said before that I am not a fan or TLOU since I have already played two games that had the same idea, but saying it's a rip off is just so out there, you really do not understand how hard it is to make a game.
  • edited July 2013
Yeah, I wouldn't go as far as to say that TLOU is a rip-off. I enjoyed both games and it's obvious there are gonna be similarities since they both are essentially post-apocalptic "zombie" games. (Although there was more of a backstory in TLOU of how the infection spread etc.)
  • edited July 2013
Alright, just to say it: it can not be a rip off, because well... since when can people steal ideas from the future? The game was in development a lot earlier, at that point in time the TWD game did not exist, nor was there any announcement I believe.
  • edited July 2013
Universal themes are a thing, people. Both stories, and several before the both of them dealt with a post apocalyptic world. Other than being a man protecting a girl unrelated by blood, the stories are far apart on many levels.

In some ways I found The Last of Us to be more hopeful, and less tragic than The Walking Dead. Also, the ending is a lot different, and has a different point to make.

Telltale's story might be lovingly executed and highly emotionally charged, but it's still a simple zombie story and hardly 'original' in its own right. If you jump on the zombie bandwagon, that's the kind of stories you tell.

As for the easter egg, I believe the similarities are pretty obvious. The pool AND the tree house AND the sliding door, that's a bit too much for a coincidence (did Clem ever talk about the pool? It was just there...). Still, that's not a rip off. That's a reference.

I never cared for 'what reddit thinks', but I do believe that it mostly is a single thought and a single entity... :)
  • edited July 2013
I don't think some of these people really understand how long Last of Us was in development for or how how much of a pain it would be to go back and change the story due to cinematics. Heck, they pushed it back another year to change Ellie's facial features and for bug fixes alone.

    Also universal themes. They exist.
  • edited July 2013
    Here's a question

Do other houses in The Last of Us have treehouses? If this is the only one with that sort of treehouse then it would seem like a reference that they put the walking-dead-ish treehouse at the walking-dead-ish house. If those treehouses are all over the place in the game then I'd call it a coincidence that the similar attributes ended up on the same property.

    Wow, the stupid.

Joel is nothing like Lee. Saying they both had a dodgy past does not cut it. Lee murdered a single man. Joel became a hunter, and likely helped killed hundreds of defenseless people. Not only that, but if you've reached the end,
he is willing to doom the entire human race to save one person
    .

Also, Lee immediately cares for Clem. Joel... not so much.

Ellie is also nothing like Clem. Ellie is much less passive.

That, and The Last of Us was in development before The Walking Dead (Telltale), right? The Last of Us began development right after Uncharted 2, as Naughty Dog split into two teams. That's the end of 2009/beginning of 2010.

There's no way Telltale started on The Walking Dead that early. They announced that they'd got the rights to The Walking Dead in February 2011.

So, yeah, I think to say that The Last of Us "ripped-off" The Walking Dead is to be fairly ignorant of the facts.
