As much as I love Lee, I don't think he's really the leader type. Given Rick's profession and all, he's got enough leader qualities to make due. They are both reluctantly pushed into a leader position, but Rick fits into that role a lot more naturally than Lee does. He just seems to have more innate leader skills than Lee does. I think Lee works best as a right-hand man, or maybe an advisor, like he was when Lilly and Kenny were still 'leading' the group, more or less. I think Lee has more attributes and skills that fit that position than he does as a leader.
I agree, Lee never really led anything. He was always, like you say, more of the right hand, like Daryl. The dominant personalities were definitely Kenny and Lilly. Whereas, Rick was thrust into the leadership role almost immediately, whether he wanted it or not, and took to it like a duck to water.
Rick.

Lee Everett, cause he thinks things through with a cool head when the situations heat up (yes I know it sounds lame, but it's the best I can come up with).
Plus, he tries to have everyones best interests at heart and is a voice of reason (player permitting).
Sure he may not seem like a leader, but I believe he'd make an excellent advisor. And if leadership responsibilities are thrust upon him, he will do his best to make sure any group doesn't fall apart.
Why do you say that? I mean most of Clementine decisions are tailored by the player
A good leader has to be firm and demand respect as well as have good decision making ability. Clementine is a child for one and honestly due to that, immature and follows her heart, shes not a leader.

Lee was an everyman, mostly wanting to keep everyone safe and in check. There were only a few times where we as him faced an immoral option, but we got through it.
Rick however, has been living a LONG long time, and somehow is still a good guy. Lee is awesome, but Rick still remains my favorite character in the Walking Dead universe for the person he remains even through all that he's had to do.
MINOR SPOILER FOR COMIC IN VOLUME 22: Except for that part where he hit the guard with a cane like a crotchety old man.
I agree! Rick is my favorite characters on the show - next to Daryl, and Hershel - RIP.
In the Beginning... I wasn't really sure what to make of him. He seemed like a decent man, but at the same time, a little mundane at first - plus I was still taking in the idea of a zombie apocalypse, and therefore wasn't really in a position to appreciate his character.
(Until I started watching TWD, I had never really watched any zombie horror movies or shows before.)

Lee no contest. I disagree with the notion that he was never the real leader. Lilly and Kenny both thought they were the leaders, but Lee was always the one who stepped up when it mattered (got Larry's meds, got them out of the situation with St Johns, finished off the St John's, kept the group together after the death of Kenny's family, got Clementine back despite being half dead.
I don't rate Rick as a character or a leader so I don't really know what to say. Hell I ain't even watched the last three and a half eps of the show because the undeserved survival of his core group greatly displeases me. One thing I would say in his favor is that he has gained an unusual amount of loyalty from his crew, who seem to go along with everything he says and does. Lee never had that. However this is due to strange, boring writing rather than Rick having some higher level of competance imo.
Lee, no question about it. I feel Rick is too overboard sometimes in the show even if he gets the job done, and just Lee does a much better job. I know characters die were lot in the group on both sides, but I think there are more times with Rick lives could've been saved or spared than anything Lee had any control of. In the episodes last season I was actually getting fed up with Rick because of how he treated those at Alexandria, I get it, he's been out there and most of them haven't, but he could've dealt with the situation a lot bigger instead dropping most of them in at the deep end and seeing if they swim rather than training them and gradually getting them used to it. Rick was being too harsh is what I mean. If it were Lee in that situation, it could've easily seen him getting charge a whole lot better.
If the two were running for president, Lee would get my vote.
There was no time to gradually train people. Those zombies were coming. Im the first one to say Rick can be a little over intense but that is because he has been through the ringer since the day he came out of a coma alone. The Alexandrians were coddled by comparison and they needed that shove.
Lee hadnt even been through half as much insanity as Rick and his group. Maybe if he had, he woukd be the same way.

I love Rick. He's such a strong character, not to mention a decent man.
He's the kind of man I'd want to be in a survival situation - someone who is willing to what needs to be done. Yet someone who will also help others, even when his own life is in danger.
"Lee hadnt even been through half as much insanity as Rick and his group. Maybe if he had, he woukd be the same way." That's what makes me wish that Lee had survived to Season 2. Even though his personality is largely determined by the character, he also has some default personality traits. So to see how those traits might have changed, would've been damned intriguing!

I love lee, but as Rick's group is so much more capable at taking down walkers and securing places to live, I would have to say Rick.
However I much prefer Lee

Well Rick isn't dead yet, so...
Rick as he can make hard decisions quick and easy whereas Lee takes 2 long

Rick, Lee was leader for three days and then his whole group fell apart
Rick
Even tought I like Lee a lot more than Rick, Rick is a better leader!
Neither. Clementine is the ultimate leader. She is way more capable than the adults.
That's where Clementine inherited it from!
..........
No she isnt. clementine isnt a leader at all. And if she was she would be terrible as one
^
Clementine can't even survive alone, how she would be more capable than adults?!
I will never forgive Rick for giving The Governor a hand.
Why do you say that? I mean most of Clementine decisions are tailored by the player (in this case you).
Lol it all makes sense now!
Yeah but that had nothing to do with him.
It had to do with scum-fuck stranger who kidnapped Clementine.
A good leader has to be firm and demand respect as well as have good decision making ability. Clementine is a child for one and honestly due to that, immature and follows her heart, shes not a leader.
But she's only immature if you play her as an immature person, same goes to following her heart.
But I agree she can't get respect as long as she's a child. Ethan Forrester was a good example of that.

Rick. I love lee more, but let's face it. Everyone from the game is dead.
I know - Lee would've given the Governor the finger!

bad decisions by Rick

Well, Lee did get bit soooooooooo
Rick grimes for sure. He's more capable of handling people.
And sometimes lets the timer run out.
(?) You will remember that
cough 9 days timeskip in alone ending cough
Whats that Kenny's wearing on his neck? Oh, I get it, his lips are sealed.
cough you can survive 9 days without any food cough
I Think We All Know The Answer To That
I love lee, but as Rick's group is so much more capable at taking down walkers and securing places to live, I would have to say Rick.
