  • A big part of Rick's success as a leader has to do with the bad asses he's surrounded with. Glenn and Daryl since the start. Later on Michonne, Abraham, Rosita, Sasha, Maggie etc. (I exclude Carol because she became useful over time, unlike the others who were extremely capable when Rick first met them, there for he didn't have to waste time holding their hands). All of which who are not only able to function successfully with or without Rick, but are suitable leaders in their own right.

Where as Lee gets stuck with a bunch of over dramatic dumbasses. Kenny the reckless clown was pretty the source of all negativity within the group, Lilly wasn't much better (though admittedly much more useful; to the point where she MIGHT be the exception), Carly was a cheerleader with a gun who didn't know how to work a Duracell, Larry Doug Christa Duck and Katjaa didn't do shit, Ben was a shit bird, Omid had a busted leg the whole time we knew him, and Clementine got Lee killed by channeling her inner Carl and not staying in the house. Shit man, Lee wasn't tasked with simply leading these people, he had to fucking carry their asses. Only other survivor that amounted to anything was Molly and she takes off anyway.

A group that has to rely on one guy (or an 11 year old girl) to get shit done is doomed to fail.

  • A big part of him having so many successful people is his ability to keep people's loyalty. This group of people will follow him anywhere and thats because he treats everyone like family. He cares for the whole group and tries to take care of them. Thats what makes him a good leader even when he sometimes goes a little bonkers.

  • It's a gold necklace.

Whats that Kenny's wearing on his neck? Oh, I get it, his lips are sealed.

  • In my opinon Lee is always there when it's important and saving someones live , he isn't good in leadership but when shit hits the fan he is ready for anything.

True, but at the same time Rick also benefits from a lot of luck and circumstance when it comes to connecting with good people in the first place; obtaining loyalty and kinship from people who already have good values is easy. Like Glenn for example. Rick would've died right there in Atlanta had it not been for Glenn not only having the generosity to go out of his way to help some "dumbass" stuck in a tank, but also having the intelligence to pull it off. I can't imagine Kenny or Lilly doing the same thing. Lilly denounced saving people they didn't know every chance she got, and Kenny wouldn't even stick his neck for Shaun.

And lets not forget that when Rick first met Michonne, Tyreese, and Sasha, he basically told them to GTFO (which doesn't inspire loyalty from anyone). It was the circumstance of having a common enemy in the Governor that kept Michonne around long after Rick wanted her gone. Tyreese and Sasha dodged the Governor's slaughter of the Woodbury folks because they chose to sit out on the prison assault. Not because they thought Rick was a swell guy with superior leadership qualities, but because they themselves decided they didn't want to go out of their way to shoot at people over some crappy prison. So basically, Rick picked up 3 good people just by being less of a douche than the Governor.

I'm not saying that Rick isn't a good leader, because he is. I'm just more impressed with Lee's intelligence and overall ability to get things done in comparison to Rick who's always had a good group to help pick up the slack.

  • Rick, obviously. He has been keeping the group togheter for AGES when Lee just led his group just 3 months and he just died.

  • But his death wasn't his fault, but rather the Stranger who took Clementine. Think about if the Stranger hadn't kidnapped Clementine, then Lee would never have gotten bit.

Of course some will argue that if Kenny hadn't taken the food out of a station wagon, that the stranger would never been after them in the first place.

While granted that is true, it doesn't mean that the group would have found food elsewhere, as the place was already pretty picked clean. That's just one of the things that Kenny and Lily were arguing about, the lack of food, when they, (Kenny,Lee, and Mark), carried one of Ben's friends back to the motel. And it is something they argued about again when Kenny and Lee came back from the supply run.

So to say that it was a mistake, to take the food in the station wagon - it might have been a morally wrong thing to do, it's not like they had a lot of choice as to where or when they got food.
