What's your favorite horror game, scary-wise?

  • Yeah, Bioshock had not just scary enemies, but the entire city if Rapture was disturbing in some way. Mixed together... ugh, pee pants city.

And the fucking funeral home, man! GAH!

  • SOMA. It feels very refreshing in the horror genre, with both a powerful overarching story and a creative (science-fiction, underwater) setting. Another good point is that it avoids a silent protagonist by actually giving you someone to interact with. I'll admit the game does have its slower points, but it's definitely worth it by the end.

Otherwise the game is absolutely gorgeous graphics-wise and although the scares are few, when they hit they really hit.

  • It's old school, but I really enjoyed I Have No Mouth And I Must Scream.

  • Until dawn and alien isolation the evil within was scary with that fuckin spider girl

  • First F.E.A.R

  • Still part of the horror genre. Just because it's horror doesn't mean it's always 'scary'.

Here's an update on the thread. BioShock and The Last of Us don't count as horror games either. It's because, like, Walking Dead, it just has zombies. It's not scary. It's tense, but not scary.

Metro 2033 without a doubt, very atmospheric and a pretty great story. Also...criminally underrated.

  • I first played it in 9th grade when it came out. Oh man, pretty much my first dip into horror of any kind. I mean, it's not that scary on repeat playthroughs since you know when the jumpscares and surprise flashbacks will happen, but that first time is quite scary.

  • I read the book in a Sci-Fi Literature class. Dear god.

  • It's either Until Dawn, Silent Hill, The Evil Within or Resident Evil.

  • Wouldn't call it my favorite, but here's an interesting little game that got completely overlooked.

  • Evil within was pretty good. Zombiu also

  • Fatal Frame is awesome.

  • What is it?

I really enjoyed Outlast and the whistleblower DLC, Outlast 2 is due for release later this year which is something i am really looking forward to.

  • Go soak your head

    That's unncecessarily rude.

Go soak your head, Bioshock DOES count. Call of Cthulhu : Dark Corners Of The Earth was also very interesting. A very underrated Bethesda game.

  • Too bad it's gonna have NOTHING to do with the Walrider or Outlast 1 :(

  • All right, since you guys made some good points about BioShock being a horror game, I'll make it count as one.

I just need to know, does The Last of Us count as a horror game?

  • Luigi's Mansion.

  • It's Kuon.

    What is it?

  • Outlast was pretty scary until around the three hour mark when I realized death was harder to happen to you than winning the lottery. I had a point where I ran into a gaggle of psychos like three times within 20 seconds and I ran out virtually unscathed. Fatal Frame has always unsettled me, mainly cause the ideal of a horror you can't psychically stop is something much more intimidating than any foe that can hack you up or whatever...

  • Resident Evil

  • Have you played IB? It's as good as The Witch's House and Mad Father.

    * Silent Hill 2 * Silent Hill 3 * Paranoiac * Mad Father * The Witch's House * The Crooked Man

  • Yes, it's still part of the horror genre. Do people really think horror just equals jump scares or something?
Horror is a genre in itself...not just how big of a scare factor a game can produce. All 3 you named are definitely horror....but your thread, do what you want. I'm just saying.

    Look up the definition.

  • Yes, that's horror as in 'screamed in horror', which is different. There are numerous ways to define horror, genre is one of them. I'm assuming you used the first definition that popped up. Until Dawn doesn't 'scream in horror', it isn't a living thing, as an example. However, Until Dawn, is part of the horror genre. As an example.
Games like The Last Of Us still evoke 'fear', gruesome, supernatural and unrealistic environments, where fungus infects a host and turns it into a bloodthirsty killer. If that's not horror, what is? Horror can have a strong story and still be horror.

Do people really think horror just equals jump scares or something? Look up the definition.

  • Well, I changed the title.

I didn't mean to be pushy because it's your thread, you can exclude whatever games you like haha. Was just answering your post you wrote. Title makes more sense though now, I wouldn't put TLOU and TWD in my picks now.
    Have a good one.
