Which king would you fight for in the war of the five kings?

edited April 2016 in Game Of Thrones

The question is in the title; I wanted to know who you would like to follow in the asoiaf/agot world.

Let's assume you're a minor lord/lady; your stronghold has been taken by your liege lord while you were somewhere else, using the confusion of the war to steal it.

Stripped of your allegiance toward your abusive lord, you, your family and some fellow men search someone else to serve. Every king has declared, so you can join anyone you want, if you only want to.

Answer in the poll over there and explains me why :)

  • Either Stannis or Robb. Probably Stannis.

  • Renly. Yup I said it, don't hate. He was intelligent, charismatic and had the superior army. Hell, Robert even gave him Storm's End over Stannis (the heir). Had Stannis not used Melisandre's magic he'd have been made quick work of imo

  • The King in the North!

  • Renly, the only decent person among other four jerks.

He gave Storm's End to Renly only to piss Stannis because he let the targaryen children escape, not because Renly deserved it.
In this case, Renly was just a tool between the struggle of the two brothers.

For the army, it's not even sure he would have win against Stannis; he had the sun against him, Stannis had a good amount of spikes against his cavalry if I remember well, not to mention that Stannis is one of the best commander in Westeros. Yet on the other side, there's Randyll Tarly, but Renly doesn't listen him that much.
Also Stannis had Lightbringer with him, a weapon which scares the shit out of the horses... And Renly wanted to strike him with his army full mounted.

I understand your point (you're free to have it of course), but except making tourneys, sitting and eating, using Tyrell's influence, he didn't do that much in his short living time as King.

  • Renly, mainly because I think he would have ceded The North to Robb and the Iron Islands to Balon Greyjoy.

I'm pretty sure he'd be happy to just be King of 5 Kingdoms. Less stress for him, I imagine.

  • I don't think that's how it works. The reason Robb & Renly did not join forces was exactly because Robb wanted to secede from the Realm.

  • I feel Robb's motivations the most but I could not follow a 15 year old (I guess TV Robb was early maybe mid-20s) as my king. I'd probably end up following Renly because he's the most likeable.

  • I tell myself I'd fight for Stannis

But I'd honestly prefer the brotherhood over any King. Hopefully they can come to the aid of Sansa and/or Davos when the dead come. But until then I'll be with Thoros of Myr

  • I respectfully disagree because when Renly held the combined force of the Stormlands and Tyrells, he had damn near 100,000 men compared to Stannis who had 5,000 max. Now I love the Mannis don't get me wrong, but even if Stannis had a ton of spikes and Renly had to go into the sun, Renly is going to win the fight pretty easily. His army was roughly 20 times bigger than Stannis's at that point.

Man to think how things could've been different for Westeros had the Baratheon brothers just agreed to put aside their differences until the Lannisters were off the throne... It would been Renly, Stannis, and Robb plus the Riverlands vs the Lannisters. But it be a short story if it played out that

You forgot one thing: it's a host of 100 000 men. I doubt they were all around Storm's End; it would be really difficult (if not impossible) to have all of those in the same place.
Moreover, the army is composed of Tyrell's men, and I don't think they went that fast (they must have like 60000/70000)
Even with that they're still outnumbered, but it still could be a match. If Renly rides toward him and die in the first wave, it will somehow stop the fight.

Yup, if Renly only stayed at his place (he would have been the heir of Stannis after all) things would have gone differently.
But he plotted since season 1/book one to be king/to have more powers, so..

EDIT: 20.000 men were with Renly attacking Stannis. He could make it easily using this strategy.

Why would I fight for anyone else when I could fight for the winner? ALL HAIL BALON GREYJOY ONE TRUE KING OF WESTEROS

(possibly the only person to have won a war due to writers forgetting about him)

  • I gotta go with the fashion king

  • The brotherhood is led by Beric Dondarrion, not Thoros.

Seeing how the confrery works now, it doesn't seem they do care for smallfolk anymore by the way.

Now it is time for my Stannis propaganda:

He tries to defeat the White Walker since he appeared in Books/Show, so basically he cares about them in a way. He also raised a lowborn to hand of the King, which is still a big deal.
