Should Gabe have died instead of...

  • First you gotta have a car crash on an empty road and scream you child's name, because you can't find it

I would've preferred kate (here's hoping). Maybe give her a Lori death too.

  • I can understand a few defending Gabe as a character with possibilities to develop down the line. I think the issue most of us take with him is that he should know more. Fair or unfair as that appears, it's an irritation generated from experience. If we had been introduced to this Gabe at the start of the plague, hardly any of us would mind it, and we'd look forward to his development. Anyone who played the previous two seasons, and/or follow the show/comics however expect four years into this disaster for those still surviving to be more seasoned.

It's mostly due to the journey we've all been on together with so many different characters. The hardships that they've faced shaped and changed them. Some became more capable, some became more cautious, or hardened. Gabe's first two episodes with characteristics more likened to a typical teenager ( by that I mean behaving as someone might prior to the outbreak, not stereotyping to say all teens behave this way ) is off-putting.

From a story point of view, Mari was more excusable towards naivety as the younger of the pair. ( Most siblings and parents are more protective of younger siblings, and more demanding of elder siblings. ) She was also aside from Clem herself the smallest target available to attempt to shoot. This, I think, is what really bothers me about Mari dying instead of Gabe. While it's true that it might be to tug on our heartstrings, it actually didn't for me. I was simply disappointed. I think it would've had more of an impact on David once we inevitably ran into him again if his son had died in Javi's care. ( Again, fair or unfair, during the flashback scene with David and Javi it was his son that witnessed his father's behavior and I hadn't seen any real interactions between David and Mari. )

In any case, hopefully episode three can redeem this character for us all that find him frustrating.

  • That just goes to show how predictable and paint-by-numbers Telltale's writing has been recently.

  • He's not annoying. He's complicated.

He's just an independent teenager, is all. I'd be just the same way, as I am not a nomadic person and despise moving and I generally hate people (not literally, but in a sense that I would rather live like a hermit for ten years than go to a party for a few hours). He misses his father, and doesn't really like Kate (step-mother). Harder for him to get along with others.

He also just really needs someone to talk to, is all. Clementine, considering she's generally around his age and a new person (AKA not a sibling or relative), she's easier for Gabe to talk to.

  • Agreed.

  • See, this would be an acceptable explanation, and I might even like Gabes character... if not for the fact that the apocalypse has been happening for 4 years now, and there is no way Gabe would still be acting like this after 4 years of walkers, Clementine also missed her parents, but she got over it (now obviously, Clementine is more of a natural survivor than Gabe, but she got over it, she got over Lee, she got over Christa), what I am trying to say is, Gabe SHOULD NOT be acting like a spoiled brat 4 years into the apocalypse, and this is part of the reason why Javier and his family irks me so much, there is no way they should have survived this long, since they continually do stupid shit, that is liable to get them killed around every corner (Kate smoking weed, and her only real character trait is wanting to bang Javier, Gabe is acting like he just came home from school, and mommy told him to do his homework, and Javier somehow thinks a fully stocked shack, where people obviously are sleeping and filling up on gas is just a lucky find, Lee knew how to act in the apocalypse very quickly, (he obviously messed up a few times like with the st Johns) but he did way better than Javier and co. does 4 years in, while he himself was only months in, another reason I dislike Mariana getting killed over Gabe, is the fact that she is the most likely person out of all of them to survive, she does what she is told, she doesnt fuck around, when she gets into trouble, she hides in a car like told, while Kate and Gabe get stuck in a tractor.

I am normally not one to be bothered by inconsistencies like this, because I am usually too engrossed in the game, but since there is this big break between the episodes, I have had the time, and it really bothers me, that they throw Clementine, a very nice character, who most players are invested in and whose story they want to continue, they throw her to the side, for these characters, who doesnt even seem like they have learned anything from being in the apocalypse for so long

  • You gotta remember, there were other characters smoking and drinking and doing drugs in the game, not just Kate. And Gabriel is having a hard time with everything. Remember, hatred runs very deep in the apocalypse, and if he didn't like Kate from the start, then chances are he wouldn't like her during the apocalypse. And it is pretty much true that Kate isn't his real mom; he most likely went through a lot and wants his dad and his mom back (and I'm talking about before we knew about David in episode 2).

He got separated from his whole family too, let's not forget that as well. His grandfather died, his grandmother was bit and went along with David. They got separated.

And take note; Gabe is serious when the time calls for it.

Also, remember, some things happen for the sake of plot. Hence the tractor incident. And that's also why TTG probably killed of Maria; she was liked and lovable.

See, this would be an acceptable explanation, and I might even like Gabes character... if not for the fact that the apocalypse has been happ

  • Mariana was likeable after the time skip. Unlike gabe who's nothing but cliches walking. Or the walking cliche. Your interactions with talking to her was by far > gabe's. Considering the first impression gabe made on the majority of the fan base to the first impression mariana made on the fan base I disagree with you saying that it's unrealistic that mariana would've been as annoying as gabe currently is if she were the one to live.
Gabe was the way he is now for years. When he says he wants to be a man he asks javier to help him. And he keeps running away. His actions > his intentions and so far he's been shown to be a self centered, cliche, runaway, wannabe man fuled on angst. And him having feelings for clem will not sway the majority of the fans opinions or views on any developments he might receive during ep 3, 4 and 5. My entire deal with him clem concerning gabe is simple.
He doesn't have enough development to be in nothing but a friendship with her.
He should only be friends with her because a romance between kids in a telltale game would be dumb. Especially between two people who wouldn't even be good together imo. There's more but that mostly stem's from my dislike for gabe.

They were on the screen for the exact same amount of time and had the exact same amount of character development. The only reason this quest

  • It would've been way better if gabe took mariana's place. Mariana is and was liked all the way into her unwarranted and not wanted demise.
Gabe however is disliked and not a character people wanted to see and hear since the first episode by the majority.

  • doesn't really like Kate (step-mother).

I don't really think Gabe ACTUALLY hates Kate. If that was true, he wouldn't have risked his life to keep her out of TNF's line of fire by pushing her out the way after she got shot. He wouldn't have cared to try as hard as he did to help patch up her wound upon arrival at Prescott either.

He also just really needs someone to talk to, is all. Clementine, considering she's generally around his age and a new person (AKA not a sibling or relative), she's easier for Gabe to talk to.

I'm with you on this one, and I'm sure that Clem needs that as much as Gabe does, maybe even MORE considering all SHE's been through.

Pretty sure that's why they said "doesn't really like."

Nobody cares what Clementine needs, just what they want.

and that Gabe is so far just an annoying character.

    Exactly.

If Beaver(whateverfuck his name? or Badger?) kill Gabe, he just give me a favor and i have no motivation to kill him, i be like "Dude, I appreciate what you did, Go in peace, you are a good man. "

  • I think Gabe should've still lived. It showed him that he can't sit back no more. And it might give him a chance to prove himself. (Unlike Ben, of course). And we see him using a gun, so it may be showing that he's gonna do something. I'd also be surprised if he dies in Episode 3, "Above the Law."

  • He's already been taking an active part in the action scenes so far and has shown more than once that he's willing to do what he feels is necessary to protect the group.

I'd also be surprised if he dies in Episode 3, "Above the Law."

I hope he(and Conrad) plays a major enough role beforehand if that's truly the case.

  • Neither should have died this soon. I was digging the "chill out"vibe of the scene she dies in. Till it happened

  • Agreed, though I might've replaced "chill out" with "sacchirine."

  • I just think people like Gabe should have died off long ago, thats part opinion, and part fact, clueless characters will die, look at Sarah, she died very shortly after getting into the real world (bad example since she had some mental problems but still), Gabe consistently does stupid stuff, like leaving the gates of Prescott to hack a dead walker because he is "angsty teenage-angry" that he is a pussy, even 4 years in.

This is not meant to be downtalking your argument, but what examples of Gabe doing something good by being serious do you have? the only time I recall Gabe being serious is when he threatens Conrad with a gun, and that was uncalled for, since it was just a heated argument, and Javier wasnt under threat. I would love to hear, since I really want some more likeable characters in this season that arent Jesus/Mariana/Clementine (I guess Tripp and Eleanor is cool too, their personality just doesnt really interest me too much).

I do like to hear other peoples opinions though, since they often pick up things that I dont that might change the view of characters

  • Im not really impressed with Gabe so far, but I hope we can give him like a gun lesson or something, and how to act in a zombie apocalypse, since he doesnt seem very good at magic decisions that are logical in the apocalypse, for example, when he threatens Conrad with a gun, even though there was no signs of the situation escalating beyond Conrad shouting at Javier, which is understandable considering he just lost his loved one.

Heres an idea: how fucking cool would it be, to give Gabe survival lessons as Clem? you know, like Lee taught Clem, Clem now becomes the master sort of thing, considering she is probably the most skilled survivor in the group

  • If Conrad had threatened Mariana instead, my impulses would've made me shoot him.

  • On that note, how would you have felt if Mariana had been the one being escorted in the back of Eleanor's car?

  • I never said he hated Katelyn. I said he just doesn't really like her.

  • Already a bad example; Sarah was sheltered by her father. Gabe has been out in the "real world" ever since the outbreak had first started.

  • As not as much a fan of A New Frontier so far, I will admit that Mariana's surprise shocker death was just for shock value. Mariana WOULD have been more interesting to see develop than that Gabe character.

  • I would LOVE to see that. Hell, maybe Clem can teach Gabe that Knee-Breaking trick that she learned from Jane last season.

  • Yeah, admittedly, I'm happy he is the one getting the focus/development, though I don't think she really needed to die to trigger that.

The hate for Gabe comes from the general suspension of disbelief issue that the whole group had, his similarities to previous "liability" characters(mostly Nick), the obvious overreaction to Eleanor's shipteasing him with Clementine, and just being a moody teenage boy in general.
