Most underrated episode and overrated episodes?

I think around the corner doesn't get much love and to me it was the most thrilling episode of twd series till now. I also think A new day was one of the best introductory episodes. As for overrated, season 2 finale seems a bit overrated to me (people mostly rate it because of multiple endings, but we know now that doesn't mean anything)

  • It was a good episode, but people treat it, and especially the ending, like the second coming of Jesus.

Honestly, it has a lot of issues in its writing, from contrivances to things that just make no sense. Some of these are fairly small in the grand scheme (although that doesn't make them any less silly), like Clementine somehow dragging Lee to safety in a herd, the group getting trapped in the house purely through dumb decisions and actions, and Lee slowly walking through the herd while clearly making enough noise that they'd all come after him. But others are major plot points or character moments.

Both Kenny moments are wildly contrived. Kenny's sacrifice for Ben makes no sense at all, especially considering his spiel just two minutes before about not throwing your life away. He could have just shot Ben so he wouldn't be torn apart, and then escaped with the others. A certain dialogue choice has him say that he'll either save Ben or die trying. Except not only is the prospect of saving Ben just stupid given the circumstances, he shoots Ben within ten seconds of cutting himself off from Lee, so he had to know there was no chance of saving him. If this had been his final suicidal act, I could forgive the scene because it would then be a tragic implication that Kenny didn't even believe his own words about suicide. But then Season 2 happened, and the scene looks even worse for it.

Kenny saving Christa is nowhere near as dumb, but it still suffers from contrived setup. Kenny makes the absolutely boneheaded suggestion to call up the Stranger and taunt him or something, thus giving away our chance at surprise. And rather than smack Kenny upside the head and tell him he's a moron, Lee takes the radio out, apparently thinking it's a good call, resulting in it falling into the hole. Christa then just carelessly jumps in even if you make the perfectly legitimate point that you don't even really need it at this point in time.

The Stranger's arguments lose absolutely all of their punch if you wound up making all the "nice" decisions. The whole aspect of throwing your choices back at you stops mattering when it just becomes clear that the guy has no real argument and is just lashing out because he's nuts. To be fair, this is rectified when you make choices that are more difficult to justify and the scene is way better, but that's kind of a hollow victory when the scene is one big testament to how much your choices ultimately don't matter. Also, once we learn about the Stranger's true motivations, it starts to raise big questions on how the hell he managed to get to Savannah before us, and how he's been communicating with Clem on a walkie talkie over presumably huge distances, unless someone who knows a thing or two about walkies can explain that.

It's not the worst episode by any means, but I think it's definitely the weakest of the first season. That said, I understand why it gets highly rated, even if I don't agree. The Stranger confrontation is still a perfect climax to the story being told even if the execution could have been better, the Kenny scenes still pack a punch even with the issues plaguing them, Lee going through the herd is still the most badass thing ever, and the final sequence between Lee and Clementine is pretty much perfect from its design, its themes, the dialogue, the music, and just the sheer emotion behind it all. It's a testament to Season 1's greatness that even the weakest episode still hits some of the season's highest highs.

Underrated: Around Every Corner (despite some slow points this episode has many great moments like the ending and the belltower scene).

Overrated: No Going Back (most of the episode prior to the Kenny and Jane fight is a mess, with Bonnie and Mike constantly kissing Arvo's ass).

  • Lol people will do that when Lee determinantly cuts his arm off, has a stand off in the mansion, Kenny goes missing, Lee fights his way through and entire herd of walkers, we finally get revenge on the stranger and save clementine, we get 100% confirmation that clem's parents are dead and then we have a tearful goodbye.

It was a good episode, but people treat it, and especially the ending, like the second coming of Jesus.

  • He tried to save ben because he realised that Ben was never there for his family so he didn't have them to lose. This made Kenny feel grateful that he was there for Katjaa and duck, so he felt bad for Ben. Even when Ben falls you can see the struggle Kenny went through to even think about saving him, there is also that scene in the attic where you either tell Kenny to lay off of him or that he wanted to die, there is also another option but all three apart from silence makes Kenny feel sorry for him even more.

Couldn't have said it better myself, however I don't think it's the worst episode in Season 1 (that would either be Episode 1 or Episode 4).
