ANF reviews take a nose dive after season final
I'm not a person who thinks that reviews hold any value, but reviews were brought up multiple times as an "evidence" that ANF is good and those who dislike it are minority.
Thing that I noticed is that reviews have gotten worse all over the place.
Polygon 5.0/10
"A NEW FRONTIER BETRAYS ALL OF THE OPENING EPISODES' POTENTIAL"
Gamespot Ep.5 review 6/10
While this closing act ties all the dangling plotlines into a neat bow, the fiery promise of its predecessors sputters out due to some odd dramatic choices. Everything plays out too predictably and is too indulgent of Walking Dead franchise cliches to be particularly satisfying to those who have followed the travails of Javi Garcia and his erstwhile flame (and sister-in-law) Kate since Episode One arrived just before last Christmas.
IGN Episode 5 review 8.4/10
"Despite some plot missteps, The Walking Dead's third season ends in emotionally charged fashion."
Metacritic 74/100
TrustedReviews 6/10
"The Walking Dead’s third season finale does what it has to do to tick all the expected boxes, and while not as high as the series has been, it’s still more than solid."
GameInformer 7.5/10
"Keeping a story engaging gets harder the longer it goes on. Writers must balance new elements with familiar standbys to make the experience feel fresh. Season three of Telltale's The Walking Dead demonstrates this struggle, having its share of ups and down as it tries to capture the tough choices, interesting characters, and shocking twists fans love. This season has its bright spots, but it also suffers from recycled plot points and uneven writing. From The Gallows represents this season's inconsistencies; it has some satisfying moments, but it also features just as many head scratchers"
VideoGamer 5/10
"After a lacklustre start, things began to pick up as focus was put on the Garcia love triangle. But redundant flashbacks and an annoying child make A New Frontier the most topsy-turvy season of The Walking Dead, yet."
Destructoid Ep.5 6/10 Season 7/10
"Slightly above average or simply inoffensive. Fans of the genre should enjoy it a bit, but a fair few will be left unfulfilled."
US Gamer 3/5
"Just like the never-ending undead apocalypse, Telltale's The Walking Dead is becoming less stable as the seasons drag on. In Season 3, given the subtitle 'A New Frontier', the series begins to stumble under the ambitions of its creators. They're aiming higher, but their storytelling edifice, including the Telltale Engine itself, isn't always up to the task. "
NZ Gamer 5/10
"All of the cliches, none of the heart."
NewGameNetwork 71/100
"A New Frontier lacks meaningful gameplay and its episodes needed greater distinction, but it still provides that same appealing Telltale drama about an unconventional family thrust into dangerous situations."
GameReactor 7/10
Compared to last seasons, those reviews are very bad. What kind of impact could those reviews make and would you buy ANF right now after reading this?
Comments
I think the biggest thing to consider is when the fanbase agrees with the critics.
User reviews also took a massive nose dive, so it’s not only them. Steam 95, 96 for S1 and S2, but 74 for ANF (and every front page review is negative except one).
I feel completely isolated from review sites. I was very underwhelmed by the first 3 episodes and really enjoyed the 4th and 5th. And yet for review sites the opposite was true.
"A NEW FRONTIER BETRAYS ALL OF THE OPENING EPISODES' POTENTIAL"
YES! The first two episodes promised a s**tty season, but we actually got a couple of cool episodes. POTENTIAL=BETRAYED.
Despite some plot missteps
some plot missteps
This whole season is a fucking plot misstep.
Well that is interesting.
It's weird how Episode 1/2 were the bad ones, yet reviewers like them more than 4/5 which were much better.
