Do you want ToMI to end with a cliffhanger?

edited November 2009 in Tales of Monkey Island
If we look at past games, the only MI game that had a real cliffhanger is MI2, which is still one of the most talked about topics in the MI history.

So.. Do you want ToMI to end with some sort of a cliffhanger?

I do, but I doubt there will be one this time. I feel the end of the Monkey Island saga is near...*sniff*

    No, please no.

Maybe an ending setting up a new status quo, but no cliffhanger please.

I'd rather have an ending to this particular tale and look forward to further tales of monkey island.

Yeah, anything that milked this current story would be bad for me. I don't want an end of the franchise, but I also don't want it to get to the point where because of oneupmanship throughout the series, we end up with an MI7 where Guybrush and LeChuck both have Japanese B-movie style superpowers.

Absolutely agree ! Ok with a new status quo, but please, let the story end !!!

In a more sublime, mysterious manner, I suppose. I like leaving some things up to the imagination.

A cliffhanger isn't exactly what I'm looking for, but that would be fine. What I want is something really dramatic and unexpected.

The central narrative they've set up must be ended in the next episode. I mean does anyone really was a Matrix Reloaded/PotC:DMC type "ending" where the filmmakers deliberately deny the audience closure in order to try and get them to see the next installment? It stretches out stories out far longer than they are designed to go and by the end everything just gets stupid. They need to close the narrative but maybe leave a few loose ends with character subplots or some such.

Also, I would be absolutely dumbfounded if this was the last we saw of Monkey Island. I really doubt the end is nigh!

ToMI was, is and is going to be a sucess and the good thing about successful stuff is that you can continue doing it! :3

And Winslow is going to be there too! He just has to... I mean it's WINSLOW!!!

I don't want a cliff hanger, but I also don't mind if every loose end isn't tied up. So I didn't vote.
  • edited November 2009
They don't need to tie everything in a neat little bow and return to "normalcy," but I wouldn't want it to end with a "cliffhanger" specifically. They could get away with a "The End... or IS it?" moment, if they really wanted to, though.

    Yeah, I'm hoping for a MI2-like "open-for-interpretation" ending! :)
It definetely will keep the discussions and this brilliant community more alive over time.
And if they just end it with something in the lines of SoMI's and CMI's "..and they lived happily ever after"- endings, it will probably feel a little anticlimatic!

Fans need to be assured that MI is a never-ending story.
Even if they won't make another game, we need a sense that Guybrush still sails the seas going on new swashbuckling adventures deep in the Carribean!

I want ToMI to end with all the characters to sing a piratey song together, like at the end of a play. All linked together, rocking back and forth. DO IT TTG!

and a group photo pose like in the end of return of the Jedi?

Hm I'd really like to see some epic cliffhanger like the one concluding the first season of Twin Peaks.
The monkeys are not what they seem..

Imagine if Lucasarts sits on MI again though...... we wouldn't get the resolution for the cliffhanger for another decade? No thanks.... I would be 39 then...... :~C

    I don't want a cliffhanger.

Though MI2 was my favorite MI game (that is, before ToMI came on the scene), the open for interpretations wacky cliffhanger ending made more bad than good. Of course, if Gilbert would still be on the scene, it wouldn't have, but let's face it: CoMI opened the world of story inconsestincies and kinda stupid things (ahem, Carnival of the Damned) for Monkey Island series, continued in EfMI. Albeit with one noble purpose: explaining the MI2 ending (and not only) and trying to make things more interesting.

Yes, I know, if TellTales will make a sequel to ToMI, it's not like the developer team will change, and stuff... But it's better not to take the risk. Especially when we don't know for how long the Monkey Island franchise will be on stall again.

I don't want a monkey island 2 ending again. One was enough. I wouldn't mind if they left a couple of minor issues up in the air for future games but don't want it to end with Guybrush or Elaine's lives still in immediate danger (ex: LeChuck about to blow up their ship while their on it). And who knows if we have to wait 6 1/2 years or forever for a conclusion if that happens.
  • edited November 2009
well, it looks like the majority wants no cliffhanger!
I can imagine Stemmle and/or Darin going "Monkeywax!! We got some re-writing to do!!!" upon spotting this thread.. ;P
  • edited November 2009
Well I'd like some kind of open ending.. Of course we need to safe the world and everything, but it would be pretty disappointing to see an all happy ending with no room for any sequels. Also, I somehow thing LucasArts nor TellTale would like not to be able to do sequels anymore..

They can't really tie up all the loose ends can they? Not that I would want them to.
As I understand it, the Monkey Island franchise has been left open for a Monkey Island V, so its impossible to give an entirely satisfactory ending to something which hasn't happened.

Plus aren't there a few inconsistencies throughout Monkey Island, such as with Herman Toothrot?
Plus, the continued debate regarding the end of Monkey Island II

    Agreed.

The could easily tie up this story totally and just end with Guybrush on a ship sailing away saying "onwards to our next adventure".. well something along those lines, maybe a little less over-done than that...

Or maybe something like they finish off LeChuck "properly" and then sail off, then the camera pans back around to see an ominous voodoo glow coming from LeChucks clothes/hat/boots/sword/something. A kind of "to be continued" but in a way that doesn't REQUIRE a direct sequel. (Think about the ring at the end of Flash Gordon.. that kind of ending)

I am sorry, it has been a very very long time since I played the first games so honestly wouldn't know anymore. Anyway, what I meant was that I would like some open ending. Something like that we know LeChuck is still out there planning his revenge after we saved the day.

Something like that we know LeChuck is still out there planning his revenge after we saved the day.

Well... you know... like, in SoMI, LeChuck wants to marry Elaine, we kill him... in LR LeChuck wants Revenge on Guybrush, we kill him (kinda... if not in MI2, then in the beginning of CMI), in CMI he wants to marry Elaine AND revenge on Guybrush, we kill him, in EfMI he kinda wants the same thing (and we KILL him)
and he does want the same thing in ToMI (albeit in a very devious way and I really don't know why I use spoilers) and we also killed/turned human and presumably will kill for good (for good?)
. So, taking all this into account, the last thing I want is to know that LeChuck is planning his revenge...
  • edited November 2009
But a MI without him, would just be.... it wouldn't be MI...
  • edited November 2009
That's like saying MI isn't MI without MI itself. Or that Star Wars isn't Star Wars without any Jedi present. Or that Space Quest isn't Space Quest without Vohaul. All of that was succesfully proven wrong, by the way. Or like saying that.... I could go on and on, actually.

EfMI, for example, would be great without LeChuck and still be a MI. Ozzie was a great villian, really (could be even better, though). And LeChuck was there just for the sake of being there because somewhy they decided to make him come back. And that made it worse.

Don't get me wrong, I like LeChuck. But the more he appears, the more we beat him, the less value he has as a villian. He already was not a very good villian in CoMI (and a really bad villian in EfMI). ToMI greatly spruced the things up, but if LeChuck will continue to appear, then it's CoMI and eventually EfMI destiny for him, again. And there's no guarantee there will be a chance to greatly spruce things up again.

Actually I think LeChuck isn't really the big bad guy in this installment at all. LeChuck pretty much gets defeated in the very first scene. He then proceeds to hang around Elaine and Guybrush to see how he can do one of two things in a very opportunistic way, namely to get Elaine (which failed horribly I'd say) and get powerful again. The real villain in this game is in my opinion DeSinge, and I wouldn't be surprised if we run into him again in the next episode while Elaine handles LeChuck. But then let's say we remove LeChuck entirely from this game, and go with only DeSinge as the sole villain. Personally, I think it just wouldn't feel the same.

    Please, no!!! No cliffhanger.
But an odd (closed?) ending MI2-style could be fun.
  • edited November 2009
Well, maybe because last game ended with Guybrush falling off a cliff, so you never know...
  • edited November 2009
The problem with a cliffhanger is that I don't think even TTG know if they have MI for another series.

It can always be revived. Over and over again, just like LeChuck. :)

The events of ToMI should be tied up.
The cliffhanger, if any, could be a sort of joke-cliffhanger, like the first "Back to the future" movie. The beggining of a whole new story... that may or may not be told to us.
Just the same way as the game starts with the end of another whole story that hasn't been told to us.

    I want the "WHAT THE H*LL?!?!" - ending! :)

Well, if it's just about finishing TOMI without a cliffhanger but a nice & clean ending with all ends tied up, that's fine. But it should leave room for a sequel. Ah, what are we worried about...the guys at TTG have succeeded in reanimating a series that I believed was dead for sure after that absurd ending of EMI. They also successfully introduced new complex characters that have the potential to accompany Guybrush in a couple of future episodes. The only problem is that LeChuck recycling thingie...
  • edited November 2009
That's a good point. I think we're in good hands with Telltale in charge of things. And I just remembered what you said to me the other day. Telltale actually listen to their fans, which is a rarity in this day and age! Recycling LeChuck (again!) may be a step too far in the sequel, if it's made. As always you put things into perspective Mermaid. :)

I think a misterious cliffhanger is not bad! It leaves the game in the magical atmosphere tipical of monkey island adventures!! :D
