Why this fascination with Winslow?

I really don't get what the hype is with this guy. Every other post on here is about how awesome he is. What has he done to warrant this type of appeal? I find him rather forgettable and not entertaining in the least.

This guy doesn't hold a candle to the Marquis - yet De Singe doesn't seem to get the love that he rightfully deserves. The Marquis is one of the best characters in any monkey island game. He is very entertaining and funny as hell. Yet when I come to these boards all I hear about is Winslow.

De Singe makes this game and without him it would be inferior. You could substitute anyone for Winslow and it would be just as fun. Hell you could make Dinghy Dog the captain of the ship and he would probably be more memorable than Winslow.

That animation is in fact retroactively the reason for the hype.

I love both. They were very funny throughout.

Winslow won me over in Spinner Cay (probably around the time he says "Just don't got kissing them all!"); I really liked deSinge from the start.

Sooo....I like DeSinge, but you should warm-up to Winslow. The voice actor is largely responsible, of course, but then again you can't not like a guy who threatens with "scurvy buttons".

Although, I fear you've started the Telltale Games forums equivalent of a 4chan photoshop contest :(

I like Winslow for his friendly, gayish kind of way, but that's about it. Compared to De Singe, I'd also say that Winslow nearly has no charisma at all.

But you said it yourself: it's a hype. It's just there. People in here totally lost control over it. :D

I agree with you about the Marquis. As a villain, he was a brand new and worthy villain in the MI world and for that I really liked him. Winslow is just as equally likable to me seeing that so far he is the only crew member Guybrush had that didn't pull a mutiny on him no matter what the circumstances they were in as well as having some very funny lines of dialogue.

As for the fascination with Winslow, it's just a running gag on the forums, much like people being obsessed with Chuck Norris.

    Because he is awesome, basically.

I agree about De Singe, though.

Why so bitter? People have different tastes. Some think that Morgan is best new character, others like Winslow more and some, like you, find DeSinge most amusing of them all.

Personally I prefer Santino, but hey, everyone has right for their own opinion. If we all liked about same things, then world would become a dull place.

Urgh, not that SANTINO hype again. Just kidding. :D
But the presence of Winslow threads in this forum is sometimes overwhelming, I think this cannot be denied.

Winslow is like a poor man's Wally.
De Singe is about two or three stages below Largo LaGrande.

I've really enjoyed TOMI so far and I reckon it'll go up there as a top MI game (already better than EMFI for me) but Winslow, DeSinge and Morgan are all pretty poor characters.

Davey Nipperkin is a good one.

Look, I love De Singe; he's so wonderfully disturbing. But Winslow is so friendly, an approachable guy with a good sense of humor who's ready for anything, and I do mean anything ;) Maybe you don't bring him home to Mother, but he's fun while it lasts, know what I mean?

@Sir Pantalones: I've said it before and I'll say it again coz I like to make sure credit is given where due, especially if that means partially that I get to stake some minuscule amount of claim to it!

The new forum smiley of Winslow dancing :winslow: brought about by typing :winslow: was based on an idea I came up with (yes, all by myself even!) as part of the IWWHIIWWHITOMIROTPG: The Game! game. The animation itself was done by Ben304. And it was turned forum smiley by Jake.

I'm another DeSinge fan, myself, but I have to admit to finding Winslow funny as well. The "Winslow hype", though, I see as another version of the Chuck Norris meme - the ridiculous hype about the character IS the joke.
  • edited December 2009
There's a lot of hype over Winslow, yes, and I'm totally going along with it. I just think he's a hype-worthy character. :D

As people have already mentioned, the hype is all part of the fun! It's not like he's lacking in personality or anything, and it's not like it's impossible to be a fan of more than one character. It's just a fun running gag in the forums.

He's just a good character that fits nicely in TMI and the MI world. Personally I was more into seeing appropriate new character being introduced into the MI world than seeing cameos of older characters which for me failed a little - voodoo lady was fine, but Stan and Murray were a little forced and singe was nice for epi 1 but way too forced later on. I wanted to see the progression/continuation of the MI atmosphere/world far more than I wanted to see older characters and ultimately I still think TTG need to work on this and hope to see more developments in the second season - they did a fine job with season 1 but the atmosphere is not perfect for what I expected as a veteran MI player - I want darker, more puzzley, objects being essential, less inconsequential dialogue and more magic.. there can not be enough magic and I don't mean Gandalf magic, I mean a continued effort into enlarging the world and ethos that made the original series a fan's favourite and why we were so in awe that this all came back. High expectations for season 2 but please no more wii-there-are-only-so-many-options-you-can-do-with-what-you-have-and-why-am-i-going-to-another-screen-to-see if-objectx-works-with-objecty-kinda-dealio, it all felt too limited and I have stated previously I felt like I was playing a bit part in a huge dialogue fest - not enough substance for a true adventure fan. Let's be able to skip some dialogues too - sometimes when there were puzzles (!) I had to replay some very tiresome dialogues which bored me to tears. Jaded? yea maybe but I just issuing my point of view and I cannot be alone in this.

This is ofc all at least in my very humble experience.. like most I was over the moon to see more MI but I'm in the 7/10 camp through and through. It sold well and Lucasarts were happy with this, but the feeling is not right.. yet.

Because Winslow is hilarious and has an endearing personality. I like DeSinge, as well, but I feel comparing those two characters is like comparing apples and oranges.

Apples and oranges? It's like comparing potatoes and tsetse flies!

    @Mermaid (below): That's weird...is "********" a censored word?

Hah! Awesome. Does Winslow's produce the same result? Nope...apparently TTG is just trying to debunk the idea that there could ever be more than one Winslow. :)

He obviously doesn't get any love, because he is a bad guy. Well, okay, LeChuck is a bad guy, too, and he is a pretty adored character, but you know what I mean? I don't think bad guys ever get the same amount of love good guys get.

I personally think both Winslow and the Marquis are pretty good characters. Not like the forgettable same-character-model-only-slightly-different-hair-and/or-beard characters from the first 2 chapters, like Nipperkin or Crimdigit or McGillicutty.
  • edited December 2009
well, DeSinge and Winslow are different but i think their lvl of coolness is same. Winslow is more adored just because... he IS Winslow?
