Thieves' Den... Prominant Items?

edited December 2009 in Tales of Monkey Island
In Chapter 5 there's quite a few interesting items in the Thieves' Den, but there's one in particular that I noticed -right away- and was very disappointed that it was so prominent and not clickable.

The Astrolabe. I mean, it's such an awesome sailing utensil, and it's right there, broad as daylight on top of the fireplace, and stands out a lot more than the other objects, and yet, you can't click on it.

Yeah, I know this is an extremely tiny nitpick, and I did have a few other things that I disliked, but I was reading another thread and this one returned to memory.

I was annoyed that we never really got to keep the set of autographed sextants. They were never actually in the inventory and we didn't get to inspect them. I'm dying to know what Guybrush would've said.

Yeah I too was surprised you couldn't pick it up or even interact with it.

Yep, shiny gold thing was the first thing I 'tried' to click on.
I was stuck in the Theives den for a while, just trying to figure out how to keep the stuff I stole.

Maybe you mean the astrolabe. Astroblade sounds more like a Gundam weapon.:p

    ASTROBLADE!!!!!!!! SCHWINGGG! SLASH!:D

Yes, you're correct. Could have sworn when I saw it on how it's made that my satellite said "astroblade" though. Oh well.

Dammit, now I want an astroblade...

What was with that Tombstone anyway? And those Mattresses?

Every good adventure needs red herrings.. :)

Did I spent an hour trying to work out how to get the sextant out without having it nicked again? Why yes.. yes I did.
  • edited December 2009
Me too. I was totally sure I needed it
to GUIDE me in my DIRECTION to open the crossroads
And now I think I have another red herring there, with the secret box. It looks like I need it for the
    Diet of the Senses
, but now I think that I really need another thing (that I already have) instead. Pity I didn't have time to try it this morning before going to work. I'll have to wait to see if I've figured it well.

No, it's not a red herring this time.

No one has mentioned the absolute dictator of red herrings in an adventure game. (this is a bit foggy, but I think I'm generally right)In the excellent Legend of Kyrandia 2: The hand of fate, Zanthia(the protagonist) walks into a village full of sleeping people, and it's obvious you have to wake them. How? Well, you have a spell that wakes people up from magical sleep, and you have some, but not all the ingredients. Guess what! It's a red herring. You're supposed to use a completely different spell, and wake them up indirectly. A great game. But I have yet to finish it.

I was desperately trying to find another rip to the world of the living hidden somewhere under the goods of the Thief. Sadly, there was none.
  • edited December 2009
I was thinking about the possibilities of Thief stole the rip somehow, so I spent some time there doing things that resulted nothing.

By the way - I thought the voice talent for the Thief was amazing. I was really surprised that the voice actor was Jared Emerson-Johnson (not actually an actor but a music composer for S&M).

He always amazes me. He is BOTH a music composer AND actor actually, considering he also did the voices of DeSinge, C.O.P.S. in S&M and some other minor characters in either series.

Oh yeah, he did one of the COPS, but I missed out his participation as DeSinge. I say, for an actor he is a damn good composer.

Not one of them. ALL of them (maybe except Chippy, but I wouldn't be surprised if he did it too) and this is what makes him unbelievably awesome.

Even Bluster Blaster? HE TOTALLY RULES!

    Indeed.

I cannot believe how one person can produce so much different voices, you know... No two characters he voiced sounds the same. There is just an enormous gap between Bluster Blaster and DeSinge, but... well, this proves that he IS talented.

I thought I'd have to balance the scales to lift up the wardrobe they were on to reveal the rip hidden behind it. Then again I have read a lot of Edwardian adventure fiction ...

True, but I actually had to use the item I was thinking of in order to get the secret. :)

Well, to be fair at least two of the C.O.P.S.'s voices (Bluster Blaster and Curt) were heavily effect-laden. Bluster Blaster was a lot of amp overdrive, and Curt was pitch shifted up the wazoo... :D

But yeah, he's a great voice actor nonetheless... :)

Spoiler: Bluster Blaster's voice calms down half way through Season Two because Jared was performing in a show at the time, and doing that voice (which involves a ton of yelling) was destroying his vocal chords.

Yeah, oh well. Although he does the voice in 4th episode, in the childhood parts of Sam and Max.

True, but still he has proven that he can make a lot of different voices. He actually voiced so many minor characters that I can't remember, I kinda want to play all the episodes in the first season of S&M again to get to the credits and see the characters he voiced.

With the beard, the glasses, and the constantly calling me "Friend," the Thief kept reminding me of Atrus from Myst. Probably not what you were going for

I'm making my 100th post to inform you that I spent SO much time trying to steal the sextant when I was looking for "something that gives you direction."

    Very interesting to know!
I loved Bluster Blaster before he got 'broken'. :(

I was hoping a rip would be behind the chair, in the thieves den.

I spent some time trying to get the sextant, too.

Heh... good thing you stopped him - the English voice actor for Excel Excel from Excel saga had to be replaced right in the middle of dubbing the 26 episodes since her vocal chords had given out... ouch.
