Dom's voice acting

Really, really great! In the finale he had the drama nailed, and in the rest of the series he was brilliant too. Never in my life before have I played a game where one character's voice actor never slips up and always gets their lines perfect. I'm pretty sure that Dom is the only person who I completely separate from his character in any game because the acting is so convincing - in most games a character will say something in a certain way that feels kind of unnatural or they'll say a line in a way it wasn't intended to be said and it'll remind me that there's an actor playing the character, but with Guybrush it's just Guybrush being Guybrush. No actor, just Guybrush. And that's truly admirable. Thanks, Mr. Armato. Quite splendid of you. I just had to get that out there :D

Also I get 10 internets for every person who opens this thread thinking "Dom's voice acting" is going to lead on to something negative. 20 internets if it has that effect on Dom himself ^_^

Dominique Armato is an amazing voice actor, and I was over joyed when I first heard that Telltales would continue to use him as the voice of the mighty pirate Guybrush. I doubt anyone could say a negative thing about his voice acting. I've adored him since Curse of Monkey Island and I can only hope he always continues to enjoy playing Guybrush's role :) .

It's true. It's completely true. There's nothing more I can say except to voice my complete agreement.

Not played Half-Life 2 and its episodes, or StarCraft? Voice actors for the major characters in those two, with the likes of Merle Dandridge and Robert Clotworthy are spot on, make no mistakes and are brilliant at conveying the feelings of the character completely convincingly. But yes, Armato = great.

Indeed. There should be a special rule for this thread. Spamming "Dom is awesome!" infinitely should be tolerated.

The possibility of someone NOT liking Dom's voice work never even crossed my mind. :o

Do they give Bafta awards for video game acting or only writing? Because his performance in the last episode definitely deserves a nomination.

Dom's voice was perfectly cast since it pretty much matched the mental image that players conjured of Guybrush's voice since the original two (or at least it did with me).

Alongside Earl Boen they made a magnificently fearsome team, a voice acting duo so good that they became inseperable (I remember all the wtf posts about LeChucks voice in Episode 1).

I'm introducing to my roommates MI and so far showed some clips of Chap. 5 to my roommate and she was freaking out over the well being of Guybrush when she heard his voice being in pain. And I had my heartstrings pulled so badly because of Dom's amazing voice acting whenever Guybrush was feeling depressed or in pain.
Hell, whenever I was playing some ToMI she would always come by and ask "How's Guybrush doing?" As if he's a legit existing person and not some character in a video game. Only really good voice acting (and character development, but that also falls into voice category in a way) could do such a move.

Dominic, if you're reading this, that is some seriously above and beyond work!! :D

Dom is one of my heroes, to me he's like William Shatner is to James T Kirk or Ford to Indiana Jones. I love those guys.

    We love you Dom!

What you people don't realize is that Dom isn't acting as Guybrush. Dom doesn't even exist; it's just Guybrush pretending he is a real human. So really we should be applauding Guybrush's acting skills for making us all believe in this Dominic person.

I agree whole heartedly, and you win 10 internets, because I thought that you were going to say he wasn't a good voice actor.
If it weren't for the fact that the graphics are so cartoonish, i would think that I was watching a movie instead of playing a game, or I might start trying to talk to Guybrush Threepwood, Mitey Pirate.

So you're telling us you intentionally tortured a real person, beloved by all this forum? After he had died? And thought his wife had turned on him?

    ...

S&M doesn't actually stand for "Sam and Max" does it?

And it's probably Dom's most demanding work so far. He is not just a great actor, he also raised the bar with TOMI.
  • edited December 2009
aye.. it was great to have Dom and Earl working together again too. I am so glad that telltale managed to get Earl Boen back voicing Lechuck (considering that he had a new VO in chapter 1), as him and Dom make a great team.

Only that... I think he has lost a little of his ability to speak fast. Everyone does when they get older though. But what he did under the effect of that Star Buccaneer's groggachino thingy in EfMI... unbelievable! That is, if that's even natural speech. There was no performance even near that even in the parts where he tried to speak fast!

Also his vocals were way more trembling than in CoMI, singing "Monkey in My Pocket". :D

Only that the sense of drama and suffering more than compensated those two "flaws". Dom's better than ever, and that's something! One of my favorite voice actors ever, if not the very favorite!

I've met some people on the net who do. They don't consider the third and fourth game canon. Not me, though. Dominic Armato rules!

Though, I've never seen him doing voice work anywhere other than MI. Does anyone know any?

I agree wholeheartedly, Dominic really put some feeling into his whole performance, especially in this last chapter. It felt like I was taking all those hits with him.

I think he does other various small roles in games, but I'm not sure. I know he was Ben Quadrinaros in Star Wars Episode I though :D

Does anyone else here know that Earl Boen (LeChuck) is that irritating doctor in the first three Terminator movies? Just found that out...

Dom really is a great actor. He really understands and fulfills the role of Guybrush perfectly.

I already loved Dom's voice and voice acting in "The Curse of Monkey Island", but I ADORE it in "Tales of Monkey Island". He really surpassed himself in every new episode. After the end of Chapter Four, I didn't think it was possible to get across the drama any better, but he really did an astonishing job in Chapter Five, conveying Guybrush's feelings through his voice.

    Dom is the best!!

Dom is amazing. Seriously, every time he talked in the finale, I wanted to start bawling; it was so convincing.

    Dom is excellent.
BTW, there even was some nice reference to Dom's COMI intro monologue in the Ep5 of TOMI.

There is two voice actor "experiences" that for me really stand out when it comes to video games. The first one is Dom in Curse of MI. Just brilliant. Blew me away, and that is impressive, counting the fact that I went in to the whole voiced-Gubrush idea with sceptisism, after the two first brilliant games. His voiceacting in EMI and Tales are also pure class.

The second one is the narrator in the first Dungeon Keeper game. Holy cow what a voice. Clean, crisp, musky, creepy, scary and exciting at the same time. I loved the intermissions between the levels, when he explained what was to come in the next land.

Irritating? He was great, though throwaway in T3.

I wouldn't call it throwaway so much as cameo, and thanks to that cameo he's the only actor other than Arnold to appear in all of the first three movies.

Agreed! And would like to add Simon Templeman as Kain from the Legacy of Kain series :D.

Dom is THE quintessential Monkey Island voice actor. He's part of what I consider to be the "Monkey Island Trinity" with Earl Boen and Alexandra Boyd, but he is by far the most important voice actor to bring back!

Has anyone noticed that Guybrush actually sounds different in ToMI than he does in Curse and Escape? His voice was higher in those games. I wonder if Dominic changed the voice or purpose, or forgot how to do the voice or if he can't do it now, being older.

Your voice changes as you age. It's not a question of forgetting the voice.

I figured he lowered it since Guybrush is older now. I really like the idea of Guybrush and Elaine being in their early thirties now. Watching the characters evolve over the season was one of the joys, for me.

But, Dom is older too, and his age and Guybrush's are about the same. Dom was 21 for CMI, and he's 33 now.

I think I read an interview somewhere with Dom where he said that he went with a slightly older voice for TOMI and a slightly younger one for SMI:SE, just to acknowledge the time elapsed between his first and last adventures, but not so much to make him seem obviously older.
