So will Monkey Island return for 2010?

So with Tales of Monkey Island shown to be Telltale's most successful series yet, will the series be brought back for a second season in 2010?
Maybe Guybrush returns to the Tri-Island region, or maybe we get to play as Elaine, or maybe another new region all together.
Plus what new characters or old characters will appear?

The series just ended. Dont expect another one immediatly! (look how long we had to wait for Sam and Max Season 3, or how long it's been between Strongban S1 and S2) If it is going to be continued it likely wont be for another year or three

This sentence still has my doubts.

    [mere speculations later on]

    Unlikely, I have to say.

ToMI is definitely its most successful series; it combined Telltale's fans with that of LucasArts to create an ÜBER FANBASE.

Who's to say whether it'll come back? Sam & Max is coming back for a third season, so I'd say there's another ToMI on the cards. Just not necessarily for 2010.

I'd say maybe two or three years..I mean we have sam&max still, a series like that, and then maybe ToMI season 2..maybe it depends.

But to be honest, we can't really tell exactly how successful it was financially or how well it met expectations until someone at TTG releases more information. ToMI is the first series I've bought, so I don't have the experience to compare it to others, but the fact I'm a new fan of TTG is a good sign. Another good indication can be found on the main forum page: "Most users ever online was 1,335, 07/07/2009 at 03:04 pm." That's the day chapter one was released. A bigger fan base? Probably. Most successful series? Depends on the return on their investment. I'd be willing to bet this next season of S&M will be the best yet, not only because TTG has improved, but because they have grabbed a lot of attention recently.

Nice link. If Dan Conners was making those remarks way back in July, then ToMI was rolling in significant profits before chapter two was even released. That certainly weakens any arguments that people may have only purchased the first chapter to check it out.

Considering you couldn't buy individual episodes until much later, that argument doesn't hold any water anyway.

As for another Monkey Island in 2010, I doubt it. My money is on 2011 at the earliest.

Being an absolute fan who doesn't know anything about how the business side of things are run, or any side of things are run to be honest, I'd say 2011 is probably the earliest we'd see a season two. I really doubt Telltale is working on another season of Tales already, and I also doubt that they'll leave the design team to just sit and twiddle their thumbs for a few months before they get a go ahead from Lucas to do a season two. I'm guessing they have something already lined up for them to work on when they get back from the Christmas break. What I'd really like to know is how LA felt about working with Telltale. If it wasn't successful enough for their tastes, that'll throw season two out the window completely.

The only think I dissagree with you on, lena, is that if ToMI is really as popular and successful as everyone claims, I bet LA/TTG are already talking. Even if it isn't I bet they've already talked about wheather to make another season.

I suspect the "yes or no" has been answered to some degree of solidity, however I doubt they have much in the way of p lans unless there were some unused concepts from S1 that they're going to use in S2.

I kind of doubt it will be 2010.. but I have a really good feeling we will see another TTG MI game in the near future.
  • edited December 2009
Yeah 2010 is way too soon considering they have another series planned for that year and the DVD for Tales still needs to be finished. I still also would like a chance to get into their other series too. 2011 is probably the earliest as someone else said, but I wouldn't mind a much later release if it means they could take more time to work it out, as long as we have some announcements or hints toward the fact that another game is in the works beforehand so I don't go nuts.

Probably March 2011 ish, with hints starting around November 2010 and an official announcement around January 2011.

Why isn't a poll about this yet?

In my opinion the hype will probably be significantly lowered if they don't announce a new season by mid-2010...

    False.

MI Fans will create the hype as soon as someone from TTG or LA posts "Confirmed: New MI Game coming soon"

Of course, if TTG continues the franchise then the post will read "Confirmed: Season 2 coming soon"

Heck, the hype will build even if there is only a little hint in an obscure website, a misplaced word in an interview or whatever (Regardless the source it will be found) ... after all we're MI fans, we can wait for 9 years (please don't make us wait that long)

I'd be more hyped if the announcement comes from LA and TTG (If it comes only from LA... it means that TTG will not be working on MI)
  • edited December 2009
Weren't they working on ToMI and W&G at the same time? I'd say it's definitely possible for Tales to come out in 2010. Probably not EARLY 2010, but still. I'm guessing it'll be their next series after S&M3, if they can/want to do a ToMI2.
  • edited December 2009
I hope not, to be honest. Waiting so long for this one is partly what made it so special, having more right away would definitely diminish it. For example, I'm a big fan of the Fable series, but the sudden announcement of a third game feels far too soon. Even worse is Batman: Arkham Asylum, I have no hype for the second game at all, considering the first came out only a few months ago.

Of course, I do want it to continue eventually, but for now I'm looking forward to more Sam & Max, and then I'd quite like to see another new series. Perhaps then it'll be time for another Monkey Island :)

Basically, I don't want them to milk it.

The first title crashed the site due to more people than predicted (and hence prepared for) Downloading the title. To me that shows that the title completely blew TTG's expectations, and henced turned out to be hugely profitable.

Well if not an entire season, how about a special 1 episode which is longer than a usual episode in a season. And if not as Guybrush, could be a spin-off. Could play as Otis, Cheese, LeChuck etc and doesn't have to take place after Tales. Could say be about LeChuck during the events of Curse.

Just an idea for a 1-off special.

The problem is that people have a lot of interests that can fill that monkey-shaped void very quickly. Wanting another game in 2010 is unrealistic, but that would be more or less optimum to capitalise on the hype. With a TV program you could take a couple of years out if you were willing to buy up some ad-space, but it's not quite so simple in pc-gaming. There are many MI fans who don't spend their days surfing forums/games-sites etc. Who might not even know about a new MI game if they have a couple of years to forget about it.

Forget about MI? That's impossible. I think the last game I played prior to TMI was EMI - which I bought and played when first released. Yet I knew about TMI as soon as it was announced, pre-ordered it the day they started taking orders, and was part of the day 1 download crush.

LucasArts knows how to get the word out.

Well considering Telltale have put out two seasons of something every year for the past two years it seems likely there will at least be some other game out this year. And it was only 7 months between the first two Sam and Max titles. Sam and Max 3 will fill the 'first half of the year' slot, there's bound to be more episodes in the second half. Now whether that's Strongbad, ToMI, or something new entirely, we have no idea.

But I seem to remember ToMI being announced then the first episode coming out about a month later, which is crazy in a market where games are generally announced two years before release. Based on that, Telltale could well be working on Season 2 right now and we wouldn't know.

So I wouldn't count it out, although a lot depends on LucasArts. ToMI was a bigger hit than anyone expected, which could lead to LA asking for much more money for the season 2 license, or realising people still love MI and wanting to do MI6 as a regular retail release in-house. Alternatively they might want to do a MI2 remake and have a new Telltale series ready to go at the same time.

It's all up in the air, but I wouldn't count out the possibility at all. Telltale will be releasing something else after Sam and Max this year, the question is what.

After finishing 105 of MI (and knowing how popular the game was), I would bet money there will be a S2. (of course LA has a track record of being... lets say unusual... with their choises of which games to drop, so there's no 99.9%-probability-esque guesses here...) Now wheather it's going to be in 2010 remains to be seen...

It's been speculated that Strongbad wont have a S2 because of VA issues
It's also been speculated and hinted by TTG that there wont be anymore Bone games
S+M S3 is alreadying being released in 2010
This means that the next game will likely be W+G S2 (if they are going to continue the franchise), ToMI S2, or a new franchise.

I would say it's too soon for TTG to make ToMI S2, but considering the (comparitivly) short time between S+M S1 and S2, and the fact that they only have 3 active franchises at the moment (with 1 being S+M) then if things go as prediced there is a 50-50 chance if no new lisences are aquired, or a 1:3 chance if a new lisence IS aquired.

So the odds are good that even if not 2010 it will be soon unless LA drops the ball........ again.......

It would be retarded not building on it now, while you got the hype up after a decade. Anything else is extremely poor business sense and requires direct extermination.

I agree with most posters that 2010 is unlikely. However, Telltale does seem to be growing, as evidenced by the overlap in W&G and ToMI productions. And I really doubt LA will deem its success too moderate for another season. Let's not forget, SoMI:SE did quite well for them too. Fear not, friends, and have patience. More MI goodness is inevitable.

I really need to pick those up! I was tempted today, when i saw a disced copy in Wilko's (along with Sam&Max hit the road), but given the huge amount of games i picked up over the Steam Holiday Sale, (15!), i decided against it.

Maybe not 2010 seeing that it is S&M's year, but who knows, maybe the good folks at Telltale will do the same stunt they did at the end of ToMI with Max on the flag?

To me, I think Tales isn't done for good and that's the end of that based on the massive success with Tales (as well as Special Edition), it'll make a comeback soon enough. We'll just need to give Guybrush a breather and let Telltale work on the (very hopeful) plot for the second season of Tales. So until then, let's leave it with S&M and cross our fingers for any news for the second season.

As to when it comes out, I have no idea when it'll come about. I don't want it to come too soon that it could harm the franchise (in plot, gameplay, controls etc.) but I don't want to wait another 10 years for any new news about Monkey Island.

Think about it this way. We may not have any new Threepwood stories, but POTC is making a 4th movie for 2010, so maybe that can keep some of us die-hard pirate fans busy until they can churn out another MI.

Personally, I'd like to see Guybrush go back to friggin MONKEY ISLAND in the next game. And perhaps Morgan could return and shake things up between Guybrush and Elaine.

Lucas Arts will be aware of the commercial success of ToMI, and it seems likely given the economy that they will capitalize on the opportunity. What else are they going to make in 2010? Another starwars game???
