Monkey Island 2 Remake maybe revealed at GDC!!

The first word on Monkey Island 2: The Special Edition has emerged from the muddy swamps. We don’t usually report rumors, but we can report reporting on rumors. From Kotaku:

We’ve heard from sources that the game is due to be announced very soon, perhaps even next week at the Game Developer’s Conference, and that like the first game’s special edition, will contain all-new graphics and audio.

Unlike the first game, however, this one will be reaching a few more consumers, with versions planned for not just the Xbox 360, PC ad iPhone (like Monkey Island), but the PlayStation Network as well.

    That would be excellent.

In honor of that, I'm finally gonna buy the first episode of ToMI for my Mac.

If you've bought it for PC then you get it free. I'm assuming you haven't bought it for PC?

That's the second-best news this year!

The first being the ACTUAL news next week (supposing it actually does get announced) :D

Well, I was actually thinking of the announcement of Civilization V as the best news of the year. If Monkey Island 6 is announced the news will be better then both of them though.

    Pfft.

    Source, just for posterity.

Though this was probably inevitable. I hope they do a better job with the character models (especially Guybrush).

It's this idea that I'm more worried about.

This is great news! The first SE was great, it had issues (mostly in the port of animation and dialogue from classic to new versions), but Monkey Island 2 is the best adventure game I've ever played (or if not that, the best Monkey Island game), so I'm VERY much looking forward to this.

So, what do we hope they do in the special edition of this one?
    I'm hoping:
-Reuse cast from the first MI:SE and CMI, particularly Dom and Earl Boen.
-Elaine, Voodoo Lady and Stan's CMI/MI:SE voices.
-Nikki Rapp (Morgan) as Kate Capsize. Many thought the mystery character at the end of the first TMI would be Kate, so why not!
    -An MP3/OGG/Whatever iMuse system.
-Keep option to switch back to classic version.
-Denny Delk as someone. Anyone. Apart from the obvious
    narrator.
-Visual easter eggs/foreshadowing to future MI games.
-Dominic Armato as Largo LaGrande. (Done for an April Fools in 2003, but would be awesome to show off Dom's acting range and would be cool for fans that remember him as Largo.)
-Be more creative with backgrounds this time around. The docks in Melee island (along with a few other backgrounds) looked brilliant, but the rest kindof slaved over them looking like clearer versions of the originals. I hope they realise further that this is a special edition, not a pixel-less rerelease, in the art department at least.

Things I hope they don't do:
-Use Guybrush's MISE hairstyle. I'm sure the guys at LucasArts have learned from this after the first game's reaction.
-Denny Delk as the narrator may not be fitting for the tone of this installment.
-Don't make us wait till summer!!! Release it at Easter! Pleeeeeeaseeee!!!

When I think of more, I'll add them in.

Can't wait for the announcement! Hope it's not a false alarm!
    :D

Nice, I remember a while ago someone mentioned that March would be a special month for Monkey Island fans. Guess that was no lie. Monkey Island has really been making an awesome comeback in the past half year, well worth waiting almost a decade for the series to resume.

    From Alexandra Boyd's twitter page:
Alexandras ep of New Tricks on BBC1 mon 9pm. FROM PARIS WITH LOVE opens fri & new series of Monkey Island starts recording on Tuesday!!

Most likely, she's talking about MI2SE.

    Also on that page:
Star sighting: Patrick Stewart waiting for his car at SIDE where I recorded latest Monkey Island game. Make it SO!!!

God, now I wish Patrick Stewart did some voicework for that game!

Yeah, although I can't think of any characters in MI2 that would fit Patrick Stewart's voice.

I just imagined Largo with Sir Patrick Stewart's voice.

    guybrush's mother!

Now that I think about it, he could be very convincing as Guybrush's father.
Also, if they don't get Earl Boen, who's gonna voice Lechuck? Will it be Adam Harrington or Kevin Blackton? Or maybe 'gasp'! Ron Gilbert!

Just to stir up the pot, I'm going to point out that she says "new" and "series". Have fun with that.

That's probably a mistake on Alexandra Boyd's part. There is no way a new Telltale season of Monkey Island has already reached the dialogue recording sessions.

I hope Kevin Blackton. Harrington was pretty awful as LeChuck.

Now you've done it, Fawful! Thanks to you, my head just exploded.

I'm going to point out that I often hear British people use the word "series" instead of "season" when talking about television.

    "Season" you say.

I just noticed something in her blog. Read this and look at the date. Now i feel like i could have known earlier than the press release last summer.
  • edited March 2010
Yeah, that's exactly why I checked out her twitter today. She has spilled the beans on a new Monkey Island before, but no-one noticed the last time.

Has anyone identified SIDE yet? I think it might be the name of the synchronisation studio. Since TTG mainly records at studio.jory it might be another clue pointing at something else.

Since she's in the UK and all. She's recorded her lines without being in California before.
  • edited March 2010
The Force Unleashed was at least partly recorded at SIDE, which ties nicely in with Alexandra Boyd recording voices for Lucasarts' internally developed MI2SE.

Ah they do work on American Dad; that's probably why she saw Patrick Stewart waiting outside.
  • edited March 2010
Awesome!! :D But if they aren't able to bring Boen back, they should really hire Chuck Kourouklis, who voiced the Ferryman on Rise of the Pirate God. When I first heard the voice of the Ferryman, I though it was Boen!
  • edited March 2010
They can always market it to Earl Boen as "think about it, you've voiced all the other games. If you do this last one that doesn't have voices, we can leave you alone for the rest of your life if you like".

Clearly he should be captain dread.

    Or perhaps Elaine's Chef?

Honestly having reviewed the entire game in my head, I can't think of anyone he would work as.
