Pants didn't say that FMA was shonen. He isn't even here.

If you were referring to my own post, I wasn't saying that it was shonen either. Even by the definition of target audience. Because of the drama and philosophical aspects of the show, I think it could appeal to a broader audience than typical shonen shows would.

I would say that that is because the people who act miserable when they are upset get help and support from the people around them...but the people who bottle it up inside and maintain a cheerful exterior have no one to turn to.

The second is me. I think I've reached a danger point, because I'm noticed I'm getting aggressive at the slightly provocation now. I mean, I just broke a plant pot by throwing my cell phone at it after being unable to connect to an operator about lowering my student loan payments.

Edit, also, Pants is right about FMA being shonen.

I believe you mean Rather Dashing.

Well, knowing about it is the first step, I suppose.

Actually, three hours of sleep over the course of a weekend can do that to a person. X____X

Sorry Dashing. You, Pants, and Mortis can thwack me at your next convenience. I haven't had a free moment in the past three weeks. And I have a presentation worth 1/2 my grade in 20 minutes. I edited it by hand afterward, but here's what I'll be presenting:

Successfully thwacked. You have now woken me up. I think I can do anything now!

...Except present tourism related economic policy decisions.

I wish I could understand that.

Google translate worked for a few lines of that, you'd think I would have learned my lesson on that by now.

Basically, it's that Japanese tourism took a massive hit after the earthquake, and tourism now is only a quarter of what it was last year, and by providing reliable and open information on contamination levels will entice Asian tourists to the country. Interestingly enough, European and American tourists are much more concerned with how much it costs to visit Japan, due to a high exchange rate.

Woo! I got a job! It's a seasonal stocking job at REI, but it's a job none the less!

I could pick out some of the Hiragana characters. But that's as far as I got in my Japanese class before I realized that I wasn't learning nearly enough biochemistry and had to drop it to make more time for myself. Still, makes me feel good for an all of a week of Japanese lessons a year ago. I still remember that の looks like a pig's nose and ち looks like a cheeked off dude. Oh, and ろ looks like a rollerskate! I have others as well, but those are much harder to see.
Woo! I got a job! It's a seasonal stocking job at REI, but it's a job none the less!

That's awesome! Do you get to have a go on the climbing wall after close up? Because that's the reason I always wanted to work there when I was a kid.

I don't believe this REI has a climbing wall, so probably not.

Also, this is the store my sister works at. They were running a "friends and family hiring" thing for their seasonal help, and out of the several people she recommended, for some reason I was the only one that got called back.

A week from tomorrow. So not soon enough to get that beautiful Zelda themed 3DS on Black Friday. Seriously, that thing is so pretty, it's the only thing that could convince me not to wait for the 3DS library to build up.

Aww. I was under the impression that they all had climbing walls. Though, now that I think about it, the one near me recently got rid of theirs, probably because of liability or something.

But the money is still a good thing.

Does anyone have experience buying game downloads on Amazon? They're doing their Black Friday deals week, and The Witcher 2 is on sale for $16, but I'm not sure if I'd rather hold out and get it on GOG at some point.

God do I both enjoy and loathe assignments.

My problem seems to be an inability to get things going.

I literally can spend hours on just writing the first paragraph.
Once I get going, I do some pretty good work, I mean, I already have 3 different contradictory sources on the level of absence within the UK, (one being radically different, but still from a reliable source).

I'm currently doing 3 A4 pages of a booklet for one of the groups I am in.
I actually started research, (I posted about it aaages ago remember?), before, so I had a few peices, some leads, and I found the assignment guide, so I now know exactly what needs to be in my part.

So the plan was to devide the work into sections, in particular, word these sections into questions to ask myself.
(So for example: What is Absence? Why is Absence in the workplace an issue? ect.)

Then, with a refocused guide, I have been searching for revelant info to help me answer those questions.

(I think I have the facts down mostly. Just need the company examples, and some possible theory to support the benefits/drawbacks of some of the different methods)

Its real investigatory work. Tough stuff really.
    Especially finding Company examples.
You think that would be easy, as the slides, and the textbooks contain loads of examples and case studies, but finding relatively up to date and unique examples of what companies specifically do to handle absence, (AND each one has to be radically different, (as its 1 for each type of approach (Punitive, Preventative, and Rewarding))) is very, very difficult.

I refuse to buy from their digital download portal because they refuse to really disclose a consistent DRM policy. All they ever say is that DRM "is part of your purchase". Well, that means that the Amazon download is inferior to the GOG version, which is DRM-free, and the retail disc version, which has a DRM-removing patch.
  • edited November 2011
Okay, pass then! I didn't really need it anyway.

It's too bad, because The Witcher 2 is an excellent game and the price is more than right, but I really can't support buying digital game downloads from Amazon. There is the option of Steam during the inevitable holiday sales. I would not be shocked at all to see The Witcher 2 receive at least a 50% off cut.

Sure, Steam is DRM, but you know what you're getting into when you buy from them and there are certain benefits to the platform.

Also, Pants is right about FMA being shonen. Those designations in Japan are based on the target demo of the product, and have nothing to do with genre conventions.

It's a deconstruction of shounen tropes. It starts out with typical shounen tropes and then either breaks them down philosophically, tosses them out altogether, or evolves them into something better. FMA doesn't count as pure shounen because it's accessible to not just kids because of its action and stylized comic book feel but it's also accessible for adults because of its strong story and exploration of its world and questions regarding the laws, beliefs, and existences within said world. It's target audience is definitely not just young boys. Its target audience is worldwide and appeals to all demographics. Well, the anime anyway. I know more girls and women who watch FMA than boys, and there are plenty of signs within the show that this is intended. It's incredibly obvious from a lot of points that the show is intended to be aimed at many demographics, not just the shounen demographic. When it first started it was probably only meant to be aimed at a shounen audience, but once Gangan and Bones and Square realized what they had, they probably tried to widen the audience as much as possible and target many demographics because kaching kaching. However, the actual creative team behind the anime were only interested in telling a great story and that shows as well.

So basically, the end result is....you can't change my mind on this.

Here's the thing- I don't disagree with you. At All. Shojo and shonen in Japan strictly refer to the target demo. It has nothing to do with whom else watches the show, or its contents and themes.

All right. But the way I see it, no company in their right mind is going to sit by when a new demographic picks up on something and continue to target one demographic and ignore the other demographic(s). So the way I see it, FMA ceased to be shounen from a business sense at a certain point. However, I believe from a story standpoint, it also ceased to be shounen at a certain point.

Yeah, I'd have to agree about the Steam sales. As good as I hear The Witcher 2 is and as much as I'd love to buy it for that price, I just don't have a good feeling about buying digital game downloads from Amazon. There'll be other sales on better platforms.

Fawful, you've forgotten about the time you spent a week hitting on me after I posted a picture of myself with long hair.

I don't post pictures of my face because I'm incapable of taking one I like on my own, and I don't have other people photograph me very often.

On an unrelated note, Guru's picture is now on my shower wall. How...lovely.

And if you really need to know what I look like, you can go back a few pages and imagine most of the hair cut off.
