Okay so I just read an article about a group of people that are complaining about Toys R Us selling a Archie comic that features gay marriage.
...
Why do these people still exist?
What? You women are afraid that your children are going to grow up being homosexual by being exposed to that media? Get real you damn bigots!
Children are a lot tougher and smarter than people seem to give them credit for.
And people aren't exactly black and white, are they?
There are boys who like ballerina, and there are girls that like football.
I bet you wouldn't complain about that, would you?
(Maybe the boys who like ballerina probably would be critisised, but thats double standards for ya! )
People grow and develop in so many different ways, even if they are exposed to same environment.
You can't force a cat to bark, and even if you could, it certainly wouldn't feel comfortable about it! XD
Heck, me and my older brother were raised the same as kids, but we ended up as polar opposites.
Humans are a mixture of nature and nurture, a mixing pot of experience and pre-disposition.
In the end of the day, these people are bad parents, corrupted by a bad system they have likely been indoctrinated into.
Lets put it this way:
There is a huge difference between a person that chooses to be a Christian, and one that was "born" one.
The tragic thing in the end of the day, is that these children are going to grow up with the instruction to waste their efforts hating a group of people that have done nothing wrong to them.
I just hope that they ignore that bad advice.
(And they may do so. After all, no matter how hard they try, you can't cotton-wrap your kids. They are going to be exposed to all kinds of experiences through their peers, the internet, television, videogames, newspapers. Pretty much anything. I will do as my parents, (well mother...) did, and try to help my potential offspring make their own sense of the world, and to help them not develop into these sort of douchebags!)

Well, disagreeing with homosexuality doesn't make you a douchebag, though how you demonstrate your opinion may. On a moral scale I disagree with homosexuality, but as a firm believer in equality (especially in America) as well as a firm believer that it's not my place to impose my religious values on others through legal means (which I find to be unconstitutional, and upholding the Constitution is my second religion), I can have a personal moral stance while allowing my neighbor to enjoy their lives. It does not immediately follow that I teach my children to hate people that think differently or act differently.
One of my best friends is a gay monk in Massachusetts. I love him. Think I kissed him once, in a friendly, one time only thing. But humanity is complicated. He had religous values that conflicted with his sexual orientation but found his religous values to be the course he wanted to pursue. Our relationship would have been no different had he chosen to pursue a boyfriend and stay out of the monastery. We would have still had drinking and karaoke nights and debated philosophy, religion, history as well as True Blood and World of Warcraft.
There is a huge difference between a person that chooses to be a Christian, and one that was "born" one.
First, I have to point out that no one is born as a Christian--born into a Christian family, yes, but not born a Christian. Parents can dedicate their baby to being raised in what they hope to be a loving Christian environment, but at the end of the day each person must decide for themselves whether or not to accept Christ's sacrifice. People can't have that decision made for them by proxy, no matter how young.

I think in such cases as with the protest against said Archie comic, there may be a distinction between acceptance of people who are gay, and encouragement of children to explore becoming gay. (This is where I point out that I'm not bigoted, nor do I condone abuse, mean-spiritedness or any of that towards people.) I can say that I believe people should love one another for who they are; I can also say that I understand how a parent may wish to shield their child from making certain choices that they disagree with.
Semi-unrelatedly, I don't really believe that someone is born gay. Certainly every person--even as a baby--has their own personality and predisposition towards ways of thinking about various things. It just occurs to me that various people--my cousin for example--appear to at first not be gay, then decide that they are gay, then decide again that they're not. It would seem that if people were "born gay," there wouldn't be this hopping from one side of the fence to the other and back again.
Again, I'm not trying to be hateful, rude or bigoted. Also, perhaps I'm over-generalizing. I just think that, while someone can be born predisposed toward considering being gay, the actual decision that oneself is gay is, in fact, a choice.
Last night, before going to bed, I fill out the form requesting an Indie Game: The Movie showing near me. They ask for a city and a good venue, I suggest the Plaza in Atlanta. I thought that this independent theater in particular is the one that would be most receptive to this sort of thing, since it's smaller, more community-centered, and is actually a non-profit, while the others are sort of larger "cultural" theaters that are nice and all but they're trying to go for more of a grown-up artsy fartsy feel(which I can appreciate, but it's not really garage documentary material).
First, I have to point out that no one is born as a Christian--born into a Christian family, yes, but not born a Christian.
I'm glad that you pointed this out as it's saved me the bother of doing so. Saying that someone is born a Christian is a ridiculous statement. The only thing we're born as is a bald, wailing and self-defecating miniature Winston Churchill, without the smarts.
And I got MindTrap. Which is just awesome.
(Its basically a collection of about 500 cards with lateral thinking puzzles on it. And its just the sort of thing I need at the moment)

People are born into religious families with a pretty good retention rate. It's not quite as set as "race", but seems roughly analogous to "nationality". Religion is defined most importantly by the religion of your family, and next most importantly by the religion of your neighbors.
I'd say a person is born as much of a "Christian" as they are born an "American". They could be taken out of hat culture at an early age and never fully identify with it, they could become an expat and live in another culture, they could even renounce their citizenship, but there is a lot of friction to something like that.
I think the analogy here is best because nationality is just as vague, just as defined by family and geography, and is just as importantly linked into a specific local culture and way of thinking.
I was more pointing out the ignorance of the people who claim that they are "born" Christian.
Those sort of people, usually tend to be ignorant and self-assured. The kind of people who just claim that they are right, and don't question their own ideals.
The sort of bible bashers that don't actually read or practice the words they preach.
(I'm not sure if what I wrote was interpreted in the way I meant to...)
I was more pointing out the ignorance of the people who claim that they are "born" Christian.
And I'm saying that just because it's insanely easy to be a Christian in the US doesn't mean that, if you actually take a worldwide and a historical perspective, saying something like "You either choose to accept Christ's sacrifice or you don't" is incredibly naive and ignorant. Granted, that's to be expected from people who believe in magic, but still.

I'm going to have to argue with you here. I learned in my neurobio class that they were able to manufacture gay mice. Basically, if you changed one portion of the mouse's brain, they would start attempting to mate with members of their own gender. In addition, they have found wild type variants of gay sheep. Since animals really can't make choices like that, I must see this as proof of a sort that being attracted to one's own gender is just as genetic as having red hair, being six foot four, or having sickle cell anemia. Unless, of course, it's proven that animals are sentient, in which case we'll have to throw all this out of the window.
The best test of course, (or at least "a test") would find, through mutations, two "lesbian" mice and then create offspring through egg cell fusion and see how the proportion of gay offspring compares to that of a standard mouse couple. Actually, we'd probably have to do this several hundred times over just to make sure. If we were able to come up with something somewhat conclusive, we could start mutating individual unknown genes until we found one that corresponds to the phenotype. But our current government would never fund anything like this, so it will probably remain an unanswered question.

yep, I agree with this.
Although I don't think anything needs to be proven at this point. People who are gay, are born that way. You can't be "converted" into being homosexual. If you believe that you can then I suggest you put down your bible and get a clue.
Okay, so my way of saying things lacks the eloquence, scientific data and all round politeness of Alcoremortis' statement but then again, I never did suffer fools gladly.
On a not completely unrelated note; I'm in a pretty grumpy mood today. Can you tell?

You can't be born gay. You can't be born straight either; you develop sexuality. I'll agree that it can't be changed after you've developed it, but saying you're born gay is like saying you're born with a religion.

It's not perfectly genetic. In the example of twins, when one is gay, there is a higher chance the twin shall be gay also. However, it's about 50% elevation which, while obviously hugely statistically significant, still leaves a large area where genes are tightly matched but sexuality still produces one heterosexual and one homosexual.
You can't be born gay. You can't be born straight either; you develop sexuality. I'll agree that it can't be changed after you've developed it, but saying you're born gay is like saying you're born with a religion.

I might get another PSP.
(My last one is tempermental and has water damage after my older brother dropped it in the toilet once)
Just stick all the PSN stuff I have for it on there, (Mostly PS1 classics), then use it as a music and movie player.
I got 2 32gb Micro SDs coming, and you can get a 2 slot converter for chump change.
Could then have a 64gb portable media player, that can play PS1 games.
(I got my Caanoo for emulation. And my 3DS for new stuff)
My brother has a friend who has offered to sell me one for £50 with all the games.
I may just bite.
Afterall the overall spend would be about £87.
£50 for the White PSP and games, £35 for the 2 32gb cards, and £2 for the adapter.
(maybe could pick up a higher capacity battery as well)
Could then go to CEX and pick up some PSP games for cheap if I get bored with the stuff I got, so its another bonus.
EDIT: My iPhone 3GS is great and all, but 16gb is just too small for all my music. And I can't watch any films on there either. (again, lack of space)
Plus the touch screen is irritating for most games.
Plus I need to use it as a phone sometimes, and I'm always afraid it will run out of juice. (I spend most of my uni days listening to music)
Well I was specifically wondering about all the Space Quest stuff that's floating about right now, though secondary I also was thinking about all the King's Quest stuff.

...You're not a big indie gamer, are you? You're just getting a bit of spillover from adventure game news sources, right?

I don't know why but this made me think about throwing a shrimp on the barbie.
Holy hell now there's a good suggestion.

Wow, that's one funky monk-y.

Yeah. It's nice when you know real people and not stereotypes.
Here's why.
That abomination of a "movie" was a financial hit.
"What is wrong with people 'round here?"
"What is wrong with people?!"
I got Perudo. Which is the dice game the pirates in Pirates of the Carribean films were playing, (or very similar to it).

Would be great to use it as a mini emulation machine.
(My old man is a electrician after all. Could be a nice little project for us! )
