Who thinks Monkey Island 1 and 2 is over rated

Just curious, adding my own poll to this question

No, they are not overrated. (if anything, they're underrated by the non-adventure-game-fan gaming communty.)

Also, Next to Monkey 4, they are superior.

. While I was eating peanut butter it hit me that the poll should of also had the option

Only by today's technical standards is MI 1 over rated or under rated
Only by today's technical standards is MI 2 over rated or under rated

Obviously this is not taking into acount nostalgia, but MI1 in my opinion isn't really all that great... I mean, it was kinda good at the time but MI2 , 3 and 5 blow the game out of the water. After part 1 the game goes completely downhill and becomes a rushed mess... anyone else remember how damn slow it was to travel around Monkey Island by boat, it just seemed like they put locations as far away from each other as possible to extend play time.

Next to CMI, EMI, and TMI, the first two games are underrated. They are some of the greatest classics in the medium, the latter three are only imitations. AMUSING imitations, sure, but with major faults that make it impossible for them to fully capture the feel of playing the first two games.

No. It's not slow. If you click on the edge of the screen at the shallow water next the island, or click on a beach... well, then you get where you're going pretty damn fast.

    ...

    :p

Anyway, despite my complete idiocy when moving around monkey island, my point hasn't really changed, the latter part of MI1 is still quite mediocre compared to the actually quite entertaining Part 1.

Although MI3 partly suffers from this problem, it is to a much lesser extent and doesn't at all stop it from being my 2nd favourite game of all time.

I just beat MI and I loved it. Gonna move onto MI2 now.

Well I just ate a melon. Moving to a watermelon now.

And no, MI 1 and 2 are not overrated. But i didn't vote because i couldn't decide between that one and that Escape is the BEST GAME FOR EVERZ!

    EVERZ!!!

Well if you don't say it's overrated we can't assume you think that it is, there's different ways of thinking, without going over board I just tried to accommodate different focuses, ways of thinking.

If I'm really honest, Each to their own, but I DO find that The Secret of Monkey Island is a tad overrated, not really on here, but on gaming sites in General as that seems to be the only Monkey Island game to them and the only one that ever gets mentioned.

I though about making it multi-option but then I thought how people would abuse the poll and how confusing the results would be. People would get creative and say it's both over rated and under rated because it's in the eye of the beholder and things like that...

So I made that a actual option, "I think that trying to weigh how the games are all related/ rated is sort of pointless" Well it's a bit different but I intended more or less the same.

I'm not sure how to answer this poll. What to understand as overrated? They get more attention than they deserve? I think they totally get the attention they deserve. Besides, Monkey Island basically formed many genre conventions which now are taken as granted. And what to understand as underrated then?

    LOL I don't know everything, that's impossible.

Too hard to rate (And options as such are available).

I did give a limited direction to rating the games, by comparing them to other games.

I didn't even add my opinion to the poll, as some one who the world rarely understands I just like to watch other people strive in the social reality.

This is a very human thing to say but...
When there's a group of people in a room and they're asked a "black and white" question I think they all choose to see their own "colors".

Well, I decided to take the first answer "No, both 1 and 2 are not overrated games", because... well... it's essentially what I've said in my post, is it not? So, yeah.

Generally, I find the entire adventure game genre to be underrated. The Monkey Island games (particularly the first two) do get a lot of attention as far as adventure games go, but I certainly wouldn't called them overrated.

    LOL, brilliant.

The first is overrated a little bit by some. Whenever people cite it as the best adventure game ever, I always think "didn't you play the second?"

However, since hardly anyone I know has heard of Monkey Island, I'd say the franchise is very underrated.

A bunch of people don't even know what an adventure game is, but for those who do most can acknowledge Monkey Island. I like both 1 & 2 but I feel two can be overrated a little. It's a very good game, I just don't think it's as the greatest adventure game. The screwed up ending and the six year wait didn't help.
  • edited July 2010
The screwed up ending is exactly what makes it so great! :)

None of them are overrated, but I do agree with the guy saying that SOMI got less good by the time you got to Monkey Island. The first two parts of the game were just brilliant. I guess it's the sudden change in atmosphere that ruins it a bit, also I think that that part is the most boring gameplay wise as well. Too much back-tracking.

I think Monkey 2 is a bit too overrated by the MI fans. I still prefer Monkey 4.
EDIT: voted Next to TOMI they are superior

I don't think they're overrated, a bit over referenced as "Greatest Game Ever" but not overrated.

Monkey Island 2 is incredibly overrated IMO. I think it is my least favorite of the series.

It only looks overrated when the extreme Ron Gilbert fanboys/girls goe:"ZOMG, every MI game not made by Ron Gilbert is absolute garbitch, I want a REAL MI3 by Ron!"

Certainly that would just be under-rating the later games and have nothing at all to do with over-rating the earlier ones.

I mean, if we're under the assumption that Curse and Escape are actually good. An assumption that I think can at least safely be said to not be universally true from all perspectives.

I maintain that the ending of Lechuck's revenge is one of the worst in gaming history. I don't buy this, "but we're still talking about it, aren't we!" nonsense. We're still talking about World War II, that doesn't mean it was fun. The "it was all just a dream...OR WAS IT?" is the sort of awful stuff you'd expect to see in a fourth grader's story, not a game considered (by some) to be one of the best of all time.

Monkey Island 2 is the best graphic adventure ever. Monkey 1 is the second.

Why Dashing, I think that's the biggest compliment I think I've ever heard you give to Curse. Ever.

Wow. Don't get soft on us. :D

As much as I don't like it, I think I'm forced to admit that other people who are of relatively sound mind do enjoy Curse of Monkey Island. Hell, it's even a position that's understandable! The fact that I heavily disagree with the opinion doesn't make it something that only a moron could think, it's just extremely unfortunate for me that it's liked so much. When Escape was universally reviled, it was mainly ignored by the next game in the series. On the other hand, because Curse is loved more than any other game in the series by such a large number of people, if I am going to try and enjoy Monkey Island I have to deal with many of the changes made via Curse. You have to see how this is at the very least somewhat frustrating for someone in my position.

The first game is a classic but part of that is the historical value. In itself it's still a lot of fun, but kind of slight compared to the absolute best games in the genre.

Playing the MI2 Special Edition and trying to see it as something brand new, it still holds up as one of the absolute best for me. One thing that struck me again is how snappy and to the point the dialogue is. One of the things I find most tiresome about Curse is how meandering and longwinded the dialogue is. I wish they'd taken Hal Barwood's advice from that library book in MI2.

This. Though, I don't revile Curse as much as you do. It is a fun experience, though. But it did change everything about Monkey Island and in some ways ruined my vision of it. It gave us the trademark exaggerated cartoon look (moreso than the first two games) with the swirly clouds (HATE those) which now can't be overlooked in any future games unless the series gets a reboot. Or at least a reinvention. Both of which are best done with a Gilbert MI3, I think :).

But it did give us Dominic Armato, Earl Boen, and Alexandra Boyd. All of whom I quite enjoy the performances of.

And I loved the second half of MI1. Probably my favourite part!

Also, I'm one of those in the minority who want a realistic Monkey Island game with next gen graphics sometime. A dark one.

    Burton didn't do Forever, though.

EDIT: Why did you post this here? It has nothing to do with the thread at all...

Because you said you wanted a darker Monkey Island. None of those were Forever clips, by the way. It's just that they took the music from the first two. I think Burton produced Forever though, I'm pretty sure. He produced the third one, which was a nightmare. :(

Ohhhhh. Blonde moment there. You should have quoted me or something.

Burton directed the first two and produced the last two. I'm sure he's ashamed of having any part in them, though.
