Walking Dead-Could not initialize direct3d

  • Currently having the same issue "Could not initalize Direct3D. Make sure you have current video drivers and close any other applications that might be running. You will need a video card that supports at least pixel shader version 1.2."
I have not been able to launch the game since I purchased it, so I am not quite sure what the issue is.

Please install and run the DirectX End-User Runtime Web Installer to make sure Direct X is auto updated to the latest version, and you should then be able to start the game.

  • Ok I ran that test and the program said that "DirectX setup has determined that a newer or equivalent version of DirectX has been installed already. No installation is necessary."

  • TelltaleMikeTelltaleMike Former Telltale Staff

My apologies, if you are still unable to play, I noticed that you are using an intel integrated graphics card. We do not recommend the use of intel integrated cards for our games, as they tend to not run our games well. Can you please clarify if your graphics card supports Pixel Shader 1.2 or higher?

  • Well I am not sure why it is showing that I am running that graphics card. I am sure that I am running the game using my NVIDIA GeForce GT 650M.

  • TelltaleMikeTelltaleMike Former Telltale Staff

I would then make sure that graphics card is being used when starting the game. To do this, you may need to make sure the computer is plugged into a power outlet, and you have changed the computer from Balanced (recommended), or Power Saver, to High Performance, and then start the game again.

  • Yah that was not the problem. Is there any way that I can be sent the prefs.prop file with all of the settings on low and in windowed mode? I would like to try that.

  • TelltaleMikeTelltaleMike Former Telltale Staff

Unfortunately we are unable to provide you with a prefs.prop file, as the prefs.prop file is created for you once you start a new game. If you can, I recommend starting the game, and then switching to Windowed Mode using the Windows shortcut (Alt+Enter), then try starting the episode. (You can also try lowering the resolution of the game from the main menu.)

  • i am not able to start the game, but i do have the file. is there any way that you can change the settings for me like you did for one of the others having this issue?

Any settings changed would have to be by the user, as they are in your local documents. Please try uninstalling and reinstalling the game, and then try starting the game again. If you are still unable to start the game, try playing in either 'Run as Administrator' mode, or a Compatibility Mode. (We recommend Windows 98/ME)

after a pc restart the game starts but now and then it's stuttering and especially when a chapter ends and a new savegame has been created, it freezes. When I try to start the game again I always get the same error (shader 1.2....).

    (sry for my bad english)

Please try updating the drivers of your graphics card to the latest version, and see if you are then able to play the game without issue. If you are still unable to play without issue, I noticed you have a Gigabyte technology computer. There are known issues with some Gigabyte motherboards that prevented multiple games from running. You may need to update your BIOS which you can do at Gigabyte's website.

It's also possible this is an audio issue. Please try unplugging all speakers and mics. Then make sure you have headphones plugged into the audio jack on your computer.

Lastly, you may need to install the Microsoft Visual C++ 2010 SP1 Redistributable Package. http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=8328

After looking over your Support Tool information, it seems that your computer is running below the minimum system requirements to run the game successfully. Where we require a minimum of 512mb of dedicated memory from a computer's graphics card, your computer's card is currently running at 307mb of dedicated memory. Your computer uses an integrated graphics card, which we do not recommend using for our game, as they tend to run under minimum specs. I recommend try playing the game on a computer above minimum system requirements, if you have the ability to, or contacting the distributor you purchased the game from, for any refund requests.

My apologies, after looking over your Support Tool information, it seems that your computer is running below the minimum system requirements to run the game successfully. Where we require a minimum processing speed of 2.0 GHz, and a graphics card output of 512mb of dedicated memory, your computer is currently running at 1.4 GHz processing speed, and 0mb of dedicated memory. I recommend you try playing the game on a computer above minimum system requirements if you have the ability to, or requesting a refund from the distributor you purchased the game from. Unfortunately it seems that your graphics card is currently running at 32mb of dedicated memory where we require a minimum of 512mb. I recommend updating the drivers of your current graphics card, and see if you are then able to play the game successfully.

My apologies, I believe the minimum requirements for Jurassic Park is 256mb of dedicated memory from a graphics card. You may be able to update the drivers on your card to the latest version, unfortunately if that does not allow you to play, you may need to play on a computer that is running above the minimum system requirements.

That was one of the steps I took while looking through the 8 pages of troubleshooting. But just for the heck of it, I ran it again and got the same message:

  • I have updated my graphics drivers, directx, ensured that I am running in 32 bit mode, yet I have never been able to successfuly start the game. I am on Windows 8 and decided to run the "compatibility troubleshooter". When it asks to test the program it works! I then tell it to save the settings, but when I try to run the game again it has the same error again as everyone else has listed here.

  • Game works/launches without an error now. The only thing I've really done is activate another product/game on Steam and downloaded it. Go figure. Thanks for looking into this TelltaleMike.

So just an update. Initially about 50% of the time, I would get the "Could not initialize Direct3D" error when I would launch the game. Windows 7 64-bit, GeForce GTX 680, driver version 344.48 which was the latest at the time. After updating to driver version 344.60 which was released the other day, the game launches without issue 100% of the time. And I haven't even restarted my PC since updating the GeForce drivers.
