I thought her name was......

The Little Mermaid says that her name is something else (I dont recall what she said) but from what I remember, her name was Ariel right? Why does she have a different name but no other fables have different names?

  • Hans Christian Andersen's original story doesn't give the Little Mermaid a name. Ariel was Disney's name for her. Nerissa is Telltale's name for her.

The Fables universe stays away from Disney references. It's based on the older versions of the stories.

  • Ah okay. Thanks for the response!

  • Ariel is the name Disney asigned to her.And TellTale doesn't want any similarities between their characters and Disney's.Plus,Nerissa makes more sense:It means "sea" or "girl of the sea" or some shit like that.

Interesting. Didn't know that "Ariel" was a Disney invention.

I was wondering about that myself. I had just thought Nerissa was the version of her name from an obscure version of the original story or something.

  • The name Nerissa is a Greek baby name. In Greek the meaning of the name Nerissa is: Sea nymph. Nerissa was a character in Shakespeare's play, 'The Merchant of Venice'. :)

Ariel was, as said, Disney's name

Telltale named her Nerissa which means "Goddess of the Sea"... According to WikiPed. Not saying that's why she got that name though.
