What year do you think the outbreak takes place?

I personally think that it began in the summer of 2012 (maybe July). And it is currently Late 2013 or Early 2014... That's what I think.

What do you think?

Just kidding guys, most likely 2012.

  • Right, other wise the 2 years after 2013 in the summer would make it 2015.

Even though the game is not directly canon to the comics, I believe it treats the comics as canon source material. I think the apocalypse started around 2003-2004 in the comics. If you watch carefully, you may notice some references to this in Telltale's first Season, such as the cheap gas prices in the introduction of 400 Days or the early 2000's era technology at the Pharmacy in Episode 101.

  • The Walking Dead TV series doesn't follow the same canon/timeline as the comics.

In the TV series I would put it at Fall 2011.

  • Interesting, Its just hard to determine.

but I'd think its different depending on universe.

    I'd say...

  • since the game follows the comics canon the outbreak in the game would have started at the same time as the comics which the year was 2003 and season 2 is in 2005

  • If I was in season 2 I would be 5 if it took place in 2005. LOLZ :)

  • ....no. Look again. They're times, not years.

Suffice to say, most tours don't start in the year 1500.

I think the creators in all mediums of TWD keep it deliberately vague so that it always feel sort of like 'now.' It may technically be 2004, but they aren't going to go overboard in reminding us of it.

  • Oh guys no! You know some times are like 16:05 and it resets at 24:00

  • Heh, it would be odd if a civil war museum had stuff from 1500... Considering it started in 1861.

  • This place, apparently. Or at least the last free guided tour ends at 20:05.

Museum can have odd times. I tried to go to a museum where I live once only to find they had closed at 4:00 PM.

What kinda place closes at 20:05

  • Well that's pretty obvious and it seems the other guy thought i wasn't aware of what's military time. My question was what kinda place closes exactly at 20:05 / 8:05pm

    Its a 24 hour clock.

I have actually been creating a timeline for the comics, novels, and games using the info given on the Walking Dead wiki, and from my own reading. I am trying to mark it by days similarly to how it is done on the Wiki, or like 400 days.

(little spoiler warning for the comics and novels)

The outbreak began in the summer of 2012, sometime between July 15 to August 15. We know this because Joshua Lee Hamilton, a character from one of the novels (which is set in the same canon as the comics and the games), dies in November of 2012. His story takes place before Rick's group even meets the Governor and Woodbury. (Joshua dies around day 100 or so, while Rick's group meets Woodbury around day 200 something).

As for when it takes place in 2012, I get the July/August months from a special little snippet that was added at the end of the first Walking Dead Compendium. It is a scene of Morgan and Duane around Christmas time, and Morgan says something along the lines of "hard to believe this whole thing started just 5 months ago." So I set an approximate date of January 1st for when he says that, and I back up 5 months. I believe my margin of error could be about 2 to 3 weeks at the most. Which I feel is pretty good, considering the sometimes rather vague descriptions of time passing given after that.

So if I am right then currently the game should be between approximately mid-October to late November of 2014 at the most.

  • i assumed it took place in the 90s. it would seem like if it were in the 2000s, people could have used cell phones or some modern technology for help in the beginning stages at least. technology/electricity went dead extremely quick.

If you take it that the game follows the same time line as the comic, then the outbreak started on July 20, 2003.

You can count back the dates on the tapes found in Crawford. Logan (the doctor) mentions how many days it has been, and the tapes are dated. Then, if you say the outbreak was in 2003, it was on July 20.

It's now December (christmas tree in lodge, snow...) or January 2005/2006.

  • I thought it was 2012, but after seeing some posts, it's probably around 2003.

2000-2003 tops. Think about it. No smartphones, no tablets, no laptop computers anywhere to be found, even laying around. In the hardware store in episode 1 there are no flat-screen tvs, only late 90s model.

Plus Walkie Talkies, that are a typical 90s thing. An what EpicMoustacheGuy said above here about dated tapes

  • Guess I'll have to rewatch or replay episode 4 and pay more attention to the tapes.

Robert kirkman's answer in response to the timeline:

"The Walking Dead takes place in our world, as if this stuff had started happening in October 2003 and continued from there. Now, (Issue 38) in the book it's still only like... June 2004 at this point (If you're keeping track)."[4] "[The Walking Dead] is set in modern times ... but the book started in 2003 and only a year has passed in the book. But that doesn't mean it's 2004 in the book ... maybe it 's 2009 ... who knows ... who really cares. I don't want to be specific."
