Why don't some people like 400 Days?

edited January 2015 in The Walking Dead

I know there are a strong amount of Telltale users that thought 400 Days was obscure and I don't know why. There was some good writing and dialogue and some many alternatives in each story. Other then it just not mattering in Season 2. Although the finale and people not coming with you didn't show it was still a decent cast of characters. We were introduced to a character I believe to be one of Telltale's best. Meeting Nate and seeing the point of view of someone broken by the apocalypse but trying so hard to hide it through pretending to be crazy. 400 Days brought a character I can empathize and understand something Season 2 tried and failed to do with Jane in Episode 4.

  • I thought 400 days was cool and that Nate art is pretty good.

  • Because it was boring. I mean, there was little in the way of anything engaging cause the whole gimmick of it was spreading out different unrelated stories across 400 days of the outbreak. No context to anything or anyone.

  • And that's not a bad thing, it's a nice look.

  • I disagree. I think part of the reason Season 1 did so was it because it captured the emotions of people going into the apocalypse and how it changed them as people and a the character vhanges due to the ZA. Since by Season 2 most people have gotten use to it and have shown their true colors and its not as interesting

  • I liked 400 Days, especially Russell's chapter specifically because of Nate :)

The thing that pisses me off is how little it actually mattered as far as Season 2 went. Telltale led us to believe that it played a pivotal role just so we would buy it.
Why couldn't the 400 Days characters have been the cabin crew or even Carver would've been a good twist.

  • I liked it. But after Season 2 they sort of lied with the whole "Link" from season 1 to 2

I personally liked 400 days. And I especially loved how interconnected they made it. Every single story has some kind of call-back or reference to another, and the kicker is that there's no way to see all of these connections in a single playthrough because they all intertwine dependent on the order in which the stories are played. It makes it incredibly interesting, and adds a fair amount of replay value to just try and go back to see what you missed.

I feel that one of the purposes of 400 days was meant as a way for them to do some things they couldn't otherwise fit in to Season 1 at the time. IE. cornfield chase, a character like Nate, exploring the fate of the cancer survivors, focus on multiple different characters, etc. In a way, it was an excuse to do all these cool set-pieces that they couldn't get in S1 but still really wanted to do, but ultimately ended up building into something more interesting by the end of it. And hey, who can argue with getting more of the game?

I also saw 400 days as a proof of concept that this game doesn't need Clementine in order to still be good. Some people expressed concern that she (and to an extent, Lee) was the reason the story managed to stand on it's own and not crumble apart (and hell, for some people on here, S2 proves that even Clementine can't save it); 400 days washed away any of those concerns for me personally.

My only problem with it is that they just didn't try hard enough to incorporate it into S2. It's a great standalone DLC, but since outside of Bonnie and some 10 second cameos, that's all it currently is. There's no real reason to actually play it, other than to get another fix while you wait for new episodes.

I honestly want them to find a way to incorporate it into S3. I feel they missed a big opportunity in S2 by not using what they established in 400 days. All of those characters they could have brought back. Sure, we only got like 15 minutes per character, but that was enough to begin setting a foundation to build upon them further. They deserved more than a little cameo appearance of "hey look, it's me! remember me? yeah you do. okay, now get going!"

Of course, some things just don't really click for some people. For some, 400 days worked really well. For others, not so much. I don't think people really hated it as much as they just didn't find it that interesting on it's own. That being said, I honestly think 400 days is quite underrated.
