Have you noticed that all the females are strong and brave?

  • Okay fine I will never bring up the fact that there are females in the walking dead if it concerns you so much

Ok...? Are we really still at the day and age where we can't have strong female characters without feeling the need to bring it up?

  • Um, it's not that. I just think that it's a bit silly

I guess shitty times just hardens people.

  • Honestly sorry if this offends anyone but in the reality of an apocalypse scenario women that are not strong would be the first to die.

  • In regards to this discussions message, is there a problem with that?
These are women I like, who are strong and brave, but if psychotic, I steer well clear, unless the character had redeemable qualities.
Especially the game and comic series.

    How so?

If you put far fewer women in the game for non-realism purposes, then how can it not be sexism?

It has to be one of the other, because there must be some kind of reason, psychological or intentional, that there are twice as many men as women. Consistent bias, for wont of a better word, of this nature can't be coincidental.

I was merely stating that it has to be one of them. And I even weighted my comment towards the non-sexism argument, so like, I really don't get your issue.

People on this forum complain literally whenever the word sexism is uttered. It's like they don't even think it's real or something.

Okay, that sexist comment was uncalled for.

  • Er, it is realistic that the women can hold their own.

Maybe you're not doing the sarcastic realism meme, but the damsel in distress trope is far less realistic.

    Let's see:

Long Road Ahead, at the beginning we have:

Lee, Kenny, Katjaa, Carley/Doug, Duck, Clementine, Lilly. Ben.

It's either even here or different by one. Is that sexist?

Amid The Ruins, when everyone meets back up.

Clementine, Jane, Rebecca, Bonnie, Sarah determinant, Sarita determinant, Mike, Luke, Kenny.

Men are outnumbered here. Still sexist?

And, realistically speaking, in an apocalypse where strength is basically a necessity, men would normally have the advantage over women and do better, basic survival of the fittest. Now granted, not all men are stronger than women, but on average they are. Sure, there is overlap, but the average is what matters.

I think more women would be nice, but the whole thinking that TellTale is sexist isn't very compelling.

I'm talking total characters written, not arbitrary groups chosen from random times.

In total major characters written, there are twice as many men as women. I know because I've counted. In season 1, in terms of major characters, there are 16 men and 8 women.

And, realistically speaking, in an apocalypse where strength is basically a necessity, men would normally have the advantage over women and do better, basic survival of the fittest. Did you even read my post? I'm saying that EITHER that reason you've just given is why there are half as many women, OR they're sexist.

I'm not saying they definitely are sexist, I'm saying its a possibility, since all of us are at least slightly sexist because of the way society works. Same with race and homophobia etc.
I literally can't see another possibility between those two options, but you're free to tell me one.

You might want to read that again.

For 'non-realism' purposes. So, if they didn't put women in because fewer would realistically survive, then that wouldn't be sexism.

If you put fewer women in the game for no realism-relating reason, then what other explanation is there? Again, you're welcome to give me one, although since you ignored most of my last post I don't see that as likely.

It's also interesting to note that the 'twice as many men as women thing' even extends to zombies. Which should have twice as many women as men, if their reason for having fewer women is that more died.

Did you even read my post? I'm saying that EITHER that reason you've just given is why there are half as many women, OR they're sexist.

  • Im going to reiterate again that I fail to understand how having less female characters overall in the game makes the creators sexist, to be honest I didnt even notice. Its hardly like the females are all dumb blondes dependent on the men in fact its regulalry the opposite (hence this thread)

Why would you consider it sexist purely based on number? Quantity does not equal quality.

At the same time I also disagree with this topic as a whole the majority of the females for the same reason the majority of the males are strong, the weak are generally dead at this point

I'm speculating myself, and you are free to aid me, what other possibilities there are other than:

    a) there are less women for realism reasons

    b) there are less women because they don't want as many women characters.

Why would you consider it sexist purely based on number?

When its a consistent pattern, and if it's not for realism, then I don't see another explanation. Offer me one, you'd be most welcome.

    Quantity does not equal quality.

    Er, I never implied that.

Underrepresentation, as much as the right wing likes to pretend isn't the case, is a problem of sexism or racism or whatever-ism, though.

If there are 1000 characters in a modern game set in the real world, and just one of those characters isn't white, but they're well written, and it's nothing about realism but just 'coincidence', does that mean there is 100% certainly 0 racism at all in the writing of the game?

If a game has 20000 characters and not one character isn't white, does that stop it having any racism whatsoever, because the non-existent black characters aren't poorly written?

    or

    c) There are less women because the creators didnt see any reason to put gender as a value point when creating the characters, they didnt see any difference between a strong male or strong female they just saw a strong character. (like me to be honest, the fact Bonnie is female or Nick is male mattered very little to me)

If a game has 20000 characters and not one character isn't white, does that stop it having any racism whatsoever, because the non-existent black characters aren't poorly written?

thats a pretty extreme example, modern gaming is pretty diverse, okay if every character was a white man or every character was a black women in a setting where there would be an expectation of diversity then I'd be a bit confused but in most cases nowadays that is not the case and you cant claim the walking dead is that way.

Underrepresentation, as much as the right wing likes to pretend isn't the case, is a problem of sexism or racism or whatever-ism, though.

Yes but having one or two less women doesnt equal lack of representation which (unless you can justify these claims of sexism from the writers) was unintentional, again the game has plenty of strong female characters and weak female characters same as the men.

Also underpresentation is not something I like to encourage thinking about, its getting to the point where a character is automatically praised for being female or black or whatever and even worse being criticised for just being white and male.

In the real world some jobs are now requiring that a certain % is black or female I mean how messed up is that? People being picked based on sex and race?

  • We all know Sarah's case is special, but yes the other women are strong in their own right. Katjaa moving from healing animals to healing human lives in a flash is quite brave. Besides Sarita's unfortunate death, she still wanted to escape Carver's camp and was not willing to leave Kenny behind. Brenda St. John helped killed people (yes for the wrong reason) gotta be tough to do crazy shit like that, she certainly didn't fear shit until her bitter end.

  • Well all my points were mainly for before their deaths. A son dying, getting your arm chopped off in a zombie horde, and knowing prisoners you plan to kill have escaped and come to kill you would certainly would make anyone feel like their fucked.

Yeah because thats totally down to not being brave, she had the identical reaction to lee except she wasnt even expecting it and was in a middle of a horde

  • Lee doesn't flip out, he screams during the process and passes out.

After that, when does he flip out?

    Sarita flips out after.

  • How does Sarita flip out more than that she screams and passes out? unless you mean when she goes you ... you which I think is a pretty reaasonable reaction to someone decapitating your limb without permission

Lee doesn't flip out, he screams during the process and passes out. After that, when does he flip out? Sarita flips out after.

  • Exactly what I was gonna say. Losing an arm unsuspectingly can be quite a shocker. Lee had a different process losing his arm. Plus one tiny act of "omg!" does not negate her character being strong before the shit storm happening.

All the females are strong? Not even close.

In fact, a big dilemma season two faced was that everyone was a ridiculously dense-headed panty-waste who needed an eleven year old child to pull their asses out of the fire. Which although every now and again is passable, two grown ass adults asking a girl to climb through a dangerous crevice to retrieve an eighty pound water tank doesn't make me like them, it makes me think they suck at surviving. And of course then, my mind starts to wonder how the hell they survived this long if they can't even wait 'till we're safe before fucking each other on an observation deck.

Nobody in season two other than Clementine was really "strong." They were all dumb assholes who constantly shoved Clementine in their problems.

Edit: I had read this earlier, came back to respond, and saw just now you were referring to the show. Can't tell you nothing there (I don't watch it) but I'll just keep my opinion up on the game anyway cause fuck it now.

  • They may be strong, but with a lot of issues.

Perhaps it would help your point if you stated which characters you're talking about. Also, I'd personally like to know which characters you mean. :p Not saying you're right or wrong (though you're usually right imo, lol); it's just I can't determine if I agree with you or not because I don't know what you're talking about hehe. E.g. I'm not sure if you're even talking about the game or the show, and I think there's some confusion on this thread about which one people here are talking about since the original un-edited OP wasn't clear unfortunately. :p

Update: Just looking from the wiki's list of all the characters, and assuming you're talking about the game, because it looked like you were talking about the game in your earlier comments, I guess you mean:

    Males:

    1. Lee*

    2. Shawn Greene*

    3. Hershel Greene*

    4. Kenny*

    5. Duck?

    6. Glenn*

    7. Larry*

    8. Doug*

    9. Mark*

    10. Ben Paul?

    11. Andrew St. John*

    12. Danny St. John*

    13. The Stranger*

    14. Omid*

    15. Vernon*

    16. Chuck*

    Females:

    1. Clementine*

    2. Katjaa*

    3. Jolene?

    4. Carley*

    5. Lilly*

    6. Irene?

    7. Brenda St. John*

    8. Molly*

    9. Christa*

There were more listed, but I left a lot out because some I frankly couldn't remember who they were (couldn't remember both male and female minor characters), their roles were so small. I imagine your list was similar, but maybe you didn't count Jolene or Irene. I'd def say Jolene/Irene had character though, and even if I didn't remember their names at first, I certainly remembered their stories. But yeah, looks about 2:1 to me too, in terms of "major characters". Now if we go by who's "strong," I noted with an asterisk which ones seemed strong characters to me, and those that weren't with a question mark, because I wasn't sure for some characters (e.g. Duck--was he just just blacking out his sorrow or what? Not sure if I'd call him "strong" if he didn't really register what was going on). And then some developed into strong characters, so there's that to consider too, even if they started weak. So if you go by asterisks, you've got 14 males vs. 7 females. At least for me. So yeah, again 2:1, for season 1 at least.
