What does the Amid The Ruins slide represent?

What exactly does the slide represent? Before the episode was released the first thing that came to mind was a Cult, it looked like she was doing some sort of ritual. Another thing that came to mind was Carver's group going into war with Clementine's group. The original track that played in this slide gave off that vibe. After the episode was released, we got none of this. So maybe, after looking at the slide for a bit more I noticed Clem has three streaks of blood on each cheek. Six streaks in total, representing the six survivors of her group including herself, A.j, Bonnie, Mike, Luke, and Kenny. I don't know what the background could represent....they could've changed the background to the Russians silhouette's.

Yeah, when ATR was released and I saw the amid the ruins slide I thought ''omggg this one is gonna be the best episode ever''. And I'm still trying to figure out what it means :v

  • Stuff.... thangsssssssssss

  • There's no symbolism hidden in the picture or higher meaning, it was an image regarding the ending of In Harms Way.

  • I know the episode was re written

  • It seems highly unlikely that the entire episode was re-written to accommodate the screenshot.

More so than anything, it seems like a concept rendition of a scene the writers thought would be apart of the episode, but was later scrapped and modified to fit the ending of In Harms Way.

  • As ClemInTime said, it's Clem putting on blood as she prepares to walk in the horde. Most likely originally Clem was going to stay in Carver's camp for longer, and Rebecca would have her baby there, explaining the episode 3 slide, and so Clem would be putting on the blood in episode 4.

  • You could be right. I agree that they might have had a concept ready for the episode but it got scrapped. I think for now on they should write the whole season first, then work on the episode slide for each individual episode, just so we won't be misleaded.

  • Interesting, judging from the slides I thought that would have happened too. I was excited to see Eddie too.

Clem's group going to war with Carver sounds like an interesting theory. Maybe EP3 was originally going to end with Christa having her baby. And in EP4, there would be a war in Carver's camp that lasted the whole episode. And Clem would have a choice to put blood on her face and would cause the group to remember that.

  • It would have been interesting. The red substance on her face could also be warpaint. I got the whole "war" vibe from the original track that used to play for the slide. It sounded almost like horns, making it seem like there was a war happening.

  • It represents something that was cut and never made it to the final game.

  • Darn shame.

I don't think they need to change anything, honestly. All of their episode slides are intentionally vague, with little to no indication on what an episode entails outside of a basic idea, or a signature location of the episode (No Time Left's slide suggesting that Clementine ends up alone by the end of the story, Long Road Ahead with the train, etc). They do this as a way to 'fool-proof' the slides against any potential changes in the story/narrative.

The Amid The Ruins slide is just a small anomaly, where they made a change extensive enough that it ended up messing with the episode slide. It doesn't seem like the result of some major rewrite or the complete scrapping of an idea, just a simple case of the scene the slide is based upon (the herd scene) being moved into an earlier episode than expected. In retrospect, they could have done with remaking the slide when episode 3 came out, but oh well.

As for Eddie being in the slide, I don't think that's indicative of anything other than them not making his silhouette dark enough. It wasn't meant to imply that he was going to be in the episode, it was just meant to be a placeholder silhouette like the rest. All of the characters in that slide are just silhouettes of random S1 characters (Doug/Stranger, a Save-lots bandit, Carley, etc). Eddie's just the one that they didn't hide well enough. If they just covered up his face a bit more, it would have been fine.

Maybe it's possible that In Harm's Way ending was originally suppose to happen at the beginning of episode 4? You know, this whole escape plan, horde of walkers and everything? It's possible, sometimes it happens during development. Maybe the whole episode 3 was originally suppose to take place entirely in Carver's camp but the group were about to escape somewhere at the beginning of episode 4.

It seems highly unlikely that the entire episode was re-written to accommodate the screenshot. More so than anything, it seems like a con

  • I still think they should make an episode first, and then work for an episode slide for that episode. Making the slides vague can mislead us. We were all excited for Amid The Ruins due to the episode slide. Should they have changed it? Yes. Idk they should've changed the background to the museum or something. Although the slide was somewhat accurate (she does smear blood on herself, it DOES happen) I believe the slides shouldn't be too vague.

  • It just annoys me,the whole ep 4 should of been one of the greatest episodes of the WD,instead...well..you know how it went, even the frickin slide has changed music from the original now :(

  • Crushed hopes and dreams.

  • I HATED that they changed the slide music!! It's a small detail but the original one was ominous and creepy, the one that plays now sucks. It doesn't fit the slide at all.
