utterly disappointed

I've played the demo and I don't regret not having bought the Special Bonus Package. I won't buy the game at all.

- the control system is worse than in Monkey Island 4
- I don't recognize the good old Monkey Island humor
- the games environment looks very poor (they should have gone back to 2d)
- last but not least: online activation sucks

I wouldn't play this game if it was for free!
goodbye Monkey Island *wipes a tear*

    1) No it's not, unless you somehow like Grim Fandango/EMI's method of finding hotspots (walk near them and hope Guybrush/Manny notices) more than pointing and clicking on them.
    2) It's there, you just don't recognize it. They absolutely nailed the humor and tone of the earlier games. It's more Curse than Secret, but I will never call that a bad thing.
    3) Looks fine to me, but that's your opinion.
    4) I honestly haven't even noticed the activation happening.

What?!? The game rocks! What the heck are you talking about? No more good old humour?!?
MI is back in all its previous glory! I suggest you to give it a chance, once you get used to the controls you're going into an epic story, the plot is maybe the second best in the series. Maybe, dunno, at the moment I think it is.

I'm sorry to hear that you did not enjoy the game.

However, I thoroughly enjoyed it and found myself eager to play the upcoming chapters. If I may counterpoint the issues you've brought up with my own opinion:

    - I didn't like the click-and-drag control scheme, but WASD is also available and I found that to be quite adequate.
    - Humor is a personal taste, and I found the humor to be quite in line with other games in the series. If anything, I found some jokes to be wittier and more in character than jokes made in earlier entries in the series.
    - I found the environment spectacular, the characters distinct and memorable, and the graphics in general to be very well done. And this is coming from someone who had originally disliked the look of the game when it was announced.
    - Online activation is amazingly simple, especially considering you need an internet connection to even purchase the game.

You have my sympathy. But, I loved it. I've bought the whole season, and I will buy more if Telltale decides to continue.

At least there's some consolation in that for every whiner who posts a disappointment thread, 90% of the people who reply say the opposite.

To be fair, those 90% are the same people in every thread but the whiners each decide to make a thread of their own. ;)

    I enjoyed the game anyway

    :(

I just wish some of these people whining over extremely trivial things think about the people who can't play the game, for whatever reason.

I've been looking forward to a new Monkey Island game for YEARS, I know I'm going to love it no matter what. If you're disappointed, your standards are too high. It's just a game. There are not many games I've played that I haven't liked, and I've played a good number. Just sit back and enjoy it.

The only thing I agreed with, with the OP was the online part. Kinda. :/ I'd much rather buy a game in a shop, as I can. Nm, I'm really looking forward to going home and playing the demo as that's all I have until next week... I HOPE.

I agree with everything drybrush said....

But maybe ill change my mind once im finished..... If i can ever get off the stupid ship!!!

    Wow, some people are morons.

Tales totally rocks!! And I've bought every game in the series when it was actually released, so I consider myself a very harsh Monkey critic. I love it. I think it's perfect.

If you can't solve that first puzzle chain, then it's not the game's fault.

I also dislike the dialogs in ToMI. In most cases Guybrush doesn't say what I want him to say.
And why do nearly all characters on the first island look like twin brothers?

Oh good! It looks like you've gotten past the demo. That means that you either bought the game or considered it worthwhile enough to pirate! Either way...

At least he tried the game and give it some thoughts and feedback.

And even though his opinion may not resonate here (for obvious reasons: it's a Telltale Games forum!!), we still have to respect that he made a choice and stuck with it.

And look at it on the bright side, he is mentioning about the game. That's free publicity. Yes, it may sound bad, but as any word spread, people might get interested (to find out 'how sucky it is' for example) and ended up becoming the next fan of the franchise.

    It's win-win-win situation! I win!!

Can I have my cookie now?

He made the choice to hate ToMI, coming back to reiterate his disgust on the inability to choose dialogue for Guybrush and having characters looking like twins.

Hey wait! If he knows all these... does that mean he was actually playing Episode 1 and not the demo. Now I'm confused. Anyone wants the cookie back?

smashing is right. The guy has the right to his own opinion. Its quite disappointing to see so many ppl react this way on his own personal experience. People are different. Several of you sound like (uh..dare i say it)...fanboys. Theres something called negative critique. Its not necessarily a bad thing.

smashing it doesnt matter whether he played the demo or episode 1. The demo is meant to get ppl to buy the game right :)

Hey! Fanboys (and fangirls) hanging around the game-developer site/forum of the games they are fanatical about is perfectly legit! Don't discriminate us.

It does. If he did play the game, that would only make his very first post and probably his whole argument illegitimate.

No. On the other hand, they bumped their own dead criticism thread whose main purpose was to say "I'M NOT PLAYING THIS GAME" with complaints that extend past the demo and into the full game proper.
  • edited July 2009
smashing, theres good and bad fanboys. Usually when ppl refer to someone as a "fanboy", its meant to mean something like "someone who will defend the game/company with any means and someone who cant handle critism and therefore react with anger and childish comments". At least thats what i mean in this case :)

I dunno... if he was actually trying to make a constructive criticism he went about it all wrong.

Constructive criticism includes high and low points.

and he tried to say he just played the demo... but he starts talking about the stuff in the actual game.. it indicates he either lied and bought the game or he pirated it...... ARR! ........ Sorry if I talk about pirating I have to arr.

Im not a TTG fanboy... because there are things in their games that annoy me... BUT.. overall I enjoy 98.5% of the content in their games.

Well OP is really stupid to put negative feedback on the dev forums.

No, I understand constructive crit -- there has been some good discussions about the game and what could be improved without bashing it. This person who started this thread is obviously just a jerk wanting to see us riled up.

I just bought and played through Secret of Monkey Island Special Edition and I have to say I missed the Tales of Monkey Island's click-draging and running options and also the inventory interface. Special Edition was quite fiddly having to press a key to bring up the inventory and press another to bring up the actions, especially when combining objects inside the inventory. It made me wonder if that's why they put that combine button in Tales because of that...

So I prefer the new Tales control system over the original.

I also preferred the humour in Tales of Monkey Island. It was nice to go back and relive the nostalgia, but the jokes felt a little dated. In Tales they are more contemporary (like the D'Oro the Explorer one) and also the Tales Guybrush seems to have more to joke about with all his monkey experience. It seemed more in character. Plus Tales is made by most of the same people who worked on the original so I think it retains all of it's monkey charm.

I think the graphics in Tales of Monkey Island are excellent. It was much better than the primitive looking environment in Escape from Monkey Island. The Special Edition was nicely redrawn, but they still moved like jerky animated characters and slid along the floor when they walked etc. The mouths didn't even move in the close up face speeches. I really love the expressive characters and environment in Tales of Monkey Island. The technology just gets better and better and I wouldn't want them to go back to 2D ever.

I obviously bought all of these games already because they are pretty good value considering other games out there these days. I think Tales of Monkey Island was well worth the price. So was the special edition. I was surprised by how cheap it was! Maybe that's because they could set a low price considering it's online only distribution method. I saw a FAQ on Steam saying that most retailers are the ones that threaten games publishers to keep their online prices high because they worry about selling less units in real stores.

Commissioner, you do realize that the way inventory and actions present themselves in the SE version is not like in the original version right? In the original the interface was different with the inventory and actioncommands visible all the time.

When thats said, im ok satisfied with TOMI myself - it would have been optimal with better controls and more (and direct) dialog options tho IMO.
