the lack of real instruments is a ridiculously huge oversight in the development. it's really pretty bizarre actually. unfortunately, for whatever reason, the music just doesn't feel as important and moody as in the first games. it's nothing like MI2, where the music is really a memorable part of each scene.
I know I said this on another thread, but the music on Episode 4 was simply amazing. It had everything: Pirate music, sad music, dark music, silly music, epic music... Everything!
I think this time Michael Land did a better work because there were lots of cutscenes, which were pretty long (in a good way), and let him the chance to do more rather than a simply "underscore".
I extracted the music and I'm listening to it right now. For example, the music for when
Guybrush dies
is perfect. Despite it's still MIDI-ish, I think this time Michael limited himself to only that stuff that sounded the closest to the real instruments, instead of trying to do a complete orchestra with syths.
As I said before: Bravo! I'm sure the music for the fifth chapter will be the best Monkey Island music of all time!
No one seems to have given props yet to the absolutely demented take on Elaine's theme that underscores her poxed persona. So ... props! It's brilliant!
The licks from "The Scumm Bar" woven into "Club 41" and the Vacalian references in the final sequences involving the sponge/artifact were also masterfully done.

Yeah that was awesome.
I love how much musical continuity the series has. It's great to hear so many familiar themes that stretch right back to the first game mixed in with lots of new music.
It's a shame that they didn't use any real instruments like they did with past telltale games especially seeing as some of the past MI games did. If they do another season it might be better to choose the XBox instead of the Wii like they did with Wallace and Gromit, it's mad that the PC version gets held back because of the limitations of WiiWare.
Listening to cs-elaine-intro.ogg the score is too catchy, going from the music alone I can imagine Elaine stomping into the courtroom with her glowing eyes before going mad. Brilliant job, actual in game music seems to be a low point in Episode 4 but the cutscene music in great.
I have to say, I can never fully remember an Elaine theme, closest I can remember is that brief theme she had in Curse which appeared in the Intro for a few seconds. However it does have the same style as her theme in ToMI.

Basically her theme is based on the Love Theme from MI1 and MI2.
I really liked the added instrument to the jungle music when you see the fireflies.
tho, i didn't get why there was the 'bottom of the sea' music when Guybrush took the lion's paw from that flower thing. seemed outta nowhere.
The under the water music was also present in Curse when guybrush is falling off the cliff on Skull Island, so I guess there really isn't that much of an issue, is there?

I don't know if I'd say that, but this certainly brought to mind LeChuck's "death" scene from MI2. I've had that running through my head ever since
Morgan died
and even more since
Guybrush died
. In fact, I just taught myself to play a very simple version of the main theme on the piano, and after I finished episode 4, I picked up my little electric keyboard and started playing it very slowly and with different soft instrument sounds as a sort of farewell (even though I knew it couldn't be permanent), the whole time with that MI2 theme in mind. That was some powerful music for being MIDIs.
Basically her theme is based on the Love Theme from MI1 and MI2.
Right, I sort of guessed the "Love" theme was her theme for the first two games, but now I'm confused, what theme plays here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y0NRwWFnoX8
between 6:32 and 6:40 when the shot pans to Elaine after shooting Lechucks Sword out of his hands? As that bears a similar vibe to Elaine's theme in ToMI.
I was kind of disappointed that there is no Winslow theme. So, right now I kinda decided for myself that the "ship-map" from Chapter 2 is kinda his theme, which I nicknamed "Winslow and His Favorite Map". But seriously, does Winslow has a theme? I mean, each more or less important character has.
Yes; in Series 3 Chapter One, during which Winslow and Wally are often holed up in the cabin of Guybrush's ship together, pointing at maps, they should take the chance to make a Winslow theme! Oh and a Winslow t-shirt.... and a Winslow figurine (like the Guybrush one at Stans)
Specially the ending version of the Monkey Island Theme. Do you notice the difference?
If someone could explaine why the difference I would appreaciate it a lot
CMI still stands as the ultimate introduction sequence of any Monkey Island game. With Curse, I got a brilliant epic feeling that a monkey island game has surfaced in five years and has aimed to come back better than ever.
Totally agree with this statement. Such a feeling is difficult to achieve without a whole game rather than episodes, without a suitable graphic/animation style and without a gold tooth puzzle!
Wow! This episode had some truly great music! Land's definetly back. I hope he becomes a regular composer in Telltale, because he isn't working too much lately, which is strange, considering that he's a really good quality composer.
I specially liked the darkest rendition of LeChuck's theme in the finale, and the new atmospheric music was brilliant!
By the way, anyone noticed that in the opening credits Land's name appeared alone but in the end credits Land appeared credited with another guy? Sorry, I can't remember his name... I wonder what this new one composed...
John did all the wav arrangements of Lands midi for the games, and composed the cutscene track where the mer people attack, as well as the melody which plays while Galeb takes your photo.

Really interesting! Thanks a lot, Jake!
But I'm curious... Why didn't Land composed that two pieces of music himself? I repeat, I'm just curious.
I really, really love ToMI, you guys have done a great job! It's the best Monkey Island since Monkey Island 2 (though I don't think any game is ever going to come close to it)!
Now, the only thing that wasn't soooo good in my opinion was the music. Especially during the ending sequence, the music wasn't dramatic enough. I'm not sure where it came from, but one problem could be the lack of live instruments. Maybe the composers don't have enough time to arrange the music and to fit it to the scenes.
Well, this is the first Monkey Island I won't remember for the brilliant music. I hope in the next season you guys get a little more time and money to live up to the high standards CMI raised in terms of sound and music.
I've been loving the music of ToMI, does anybody know if there's any word of it being released yet? I'm particularly keen on the score from the prologue in episode 1...
Any chance the finale song can be made available for download, even if it demands a few $$ to do it? I absolutely loved it and it's a bit annoying to deprive yourself from doing other things with the computer just to play it within the game.
It's not supported yet. And yes to the person who mentioned the Tunnels from MI2, I was listening to wdrpgwd's remaster of it not long before and as soon as I started the chapter, noticed the similar notes in the first part of the underworld.
I don't think it's for budget reasons... Sam & Max had a lot of real instrumentation
It is and isn't for budget reasons. Basically they had to do it in MIDI for the Wii version, and if they wanted to do it live on the PC it'd mean double the work. If they had a bigger budget they'd do it, or if there were no Wii version.
There shouldn't be anyway IMO, at least not on Wii Ware, having that tight limit on the size because Nintendo didn't make a console with Downloads in mind means some of the struggle tie over to the PC version such as re-use of models and Midi music (though recording on the PC version from an a real synth).
I probably don't have the fine ear for music you all seem to have, but the apparent use of synths over real instruments hasn't bothered me at all. The music is great, as with all the Monkey Island games.

Hmm, having extracted the music files from Episode 5, I wonder why there is a lot of leftover music from Episode 3? Such as morgan-Ocean.ogg, deadcrew.ogg and bongofast.ogg

Yeah, there's a variation of it in the introduction as well as in Ch. 2 when Guybrush meets LeChuck trying to get the summoning artifact.
EDIT: Got ninja'd, never mind
Thanks guys. I'll have to go back and replay those scenes. Can't believe I missed it

Is that the sped up version of the bugeye theme, where The brotherhood are chasing Guybrush after descovering he betrayed them?

We split a couple pieces off to John because we were feeling the schedule crunch! He did a great job.
You should be able to extract it yourself with the awesome Telltale Music Extractor:
