Season 2 emotional moments.
In the last interview with Kirkman on Playing Dead, he said that before TWDG came out he asked TellTale to "make people cry" as that is what TWD is about and that is exactly what they delivered in Season One of the game and surely everyone would agree with that!
So I thought about this and tried to think what moments in S2 were emotional, but I couldn't really think of that many.
Looking back on it I think the only times I ever got emotional was when Kenny was getting beaten by Carver as I thought that was going to be it for him and the only other emotional moment for me is at the end if you choose to go to Wellington and you have that emotional moment with Kenny.
I didn't care about any of the cabin group or other new characters and I didn't care about Kenny getting killed at the end which was strange, maybe I was just sick of him by then. lol
So do you think S2 kept that emotional standard that S1 had?
Comments
I dont think season 2 had the emotional stadnard that season 1 had in any way shape or form. Probably only if you like Kenny.
The one moment when I even came close to crying was when Luke died.
The key issue is that, unlike in season 1, all season 2 deaths are predictable.
"Oh my gosh, really, you dont say Sarita has died for Kenny's character development?!"
"No way, both gay people were killed off in the same episode they were introduced?! :O :O"
"Whatttttttt, all random russians died except the one we knew, despite him being the weakest and unarmed? :O Oh unknowable universe!"
I was shocked at Luke dying as that was a death I never expected! But I didn't care much about him to get upset.
Same with people like Carlos and Sarita etc
I saw that coming as it was obvious someone would die on the frozen lake and he was walking at the back.
The only truly emotional moment I had in Season 2 was Sarah's second death when I realised that I can't save her and she's doomed to die a horrible painful death for no good reason no matter what. I felt shocked and angry when it happened, especially since I didn't think for a second that she was still destined to die in the same episode I had saved her in the trailer house. The dog bite, the arm stitching scene, Nick's off-screen death in Episode 4, and Luke's death were runner-ups.
But as a whole, Season 2 didn't have as much emotional impact as it did to me.
Luke's- uh... temporary dying.
I think season 2 didn't have a lot of emotional moments. But this one...
One moment I liked was during Episode One when Clem talked about Lee with Luke.
Luke's "everyone we set out with..." speech. It didn't fully hit me until he died, though.
Omid's death.
The dog.
Learning about Nick (such as when you accept his apology and learn about his mom, or when you're with him in the shed.)
Pete's final moments
Finding Pete's body when you leave the cabin, and Nick's reaction to it, as well as when he asks you about what happened.
Talking about Lee to Luke.
Seeing Kenny again.
Alvin's episode 3 death.
Basically any of the moments where Rebecca talks about Alvin.
Sarah's death at the trailer park (the music when you leave and her "...Clementine?" got to me.)
Luke's demise.
Campfire scene (talking with Kenny in particular. Also the music during this whole sequence, specifically when you talk to Jane and Kenny.)
"To the loved ones that we've lost along the way... and to the hope that we seem them again, some day." ~Luke's toast
"I just want my dad... when he- when he gets here, we should all go back to the cabin, we're safe there." ~Sarah in episode 4 if you saved her.
Arvo during the campfire scene (his "LEAVE ME ALONE" got to me, as well as Mike trying to comfort him.)
Lee flashback scene.
Kenny's death.
Wellington ending.
I don't know why, but in Jane's ending when the father's basically pleading with you, "...but I'm asking you, as a father, please don't turn us away."
It didn't have the same emotional standard, but you can blame a lot of that on character development and the sudden, unceremonious axing of all the characters. I want to feel bad about Carlos' death, but I barely even knew him by the time he died. I want to feel bad about Nick's death in episode 4, but its just too poorly executed to make me feel anything other than disappointment. I want to feel bad about Sarah's second death, but the way its swept under the rug ruins it. All we needed was more backstory, and more opportunities to sit down with the characters. If we got at least one campfire-esque scene in every episode of Season 2, it would have fared a lot better in this regard.
That being said, the season still had its moments, mainly with the more developed of it's cast members (mostly Luke, Nick, and Rebecca for me)
Omid's death, Kenny Death and Wellington Ending (determinate) and the Lee dream
S2 didn't have the same standard as S1 in emotional moments, or developed the characters enough which probably would have made the emotional moments it did have even better.
Omid dying and Christa crying over him, the dog, Rebecca's crying if Alvin gets killed by Carver in episode 2, Nick's reaction over what happened to Pete, Walter and Matthew, Sarita's horrible fate if you chop her arm off, Sarah being left in the trailer (The little 'Clementine?' right before you leave shattered my heart) and Sarah dying on the deck, Arvo crying over his sister in the cold, Luke dying,
So yeah, I think if you like Kenny, Season 3 can be very emotional.
Cabin group's death
Pete's death in Episode 2 hit me harder than it probably should have. We knew him for all of 15 minutes but I was tearing up when he refused to cut off his leg, and almost straight up crying after Clem wakes up and finds Pete at death's door. That dude was one of the best.
The only thing that got me harder than that would be the Wellington endings or killing Kenny. Most other stuff was pretty much... meh, at least in terms of emotional impact.
Sigh. To Peter Joseph Randall, the nicest mean old bastard I ever knew.
Nick's death is the only moment in season 2 where i actually felt anything.
Omid's death.. not really because he died, but how Christa reacted.
Clem finding Kenny.
Teared up pretty hard when talking to Pete when he was dying, talking to Nick about his mom, Alvin's death scene, and, well... I sobbed like a goddamn baby when Kenny begged Edith to let Clementine into Wellington.
Cried a lot less than I did during Season 1, though.
Moments that I found effectively sad?
Omid's death.
Clem & Christa's utter misery at the campfire.
Clem being forced to kill a starving dog.
Pete's last wish to Clem.
Sarah's break-down at the greenhouse.
Sarah in Amid The Ruins, although her second death made me more angry at how unbelievably predictable the developers were than actually saddened.
Luke's outburst at Kenny: "I'm sorry, I know I fucked up. But you know what? Jane made an offer and, Jesus Christ, I needed it, okay? I mean, look around you. Everything is shit. SO FORGIVE ME FOR WANTING ONE MOMENT TO ENJOY SOMETHING ELSE!"
Arvo being a broken wreck in No Going Back.
Luke drowning.
Clem desperately telling AJ that "it's going to be okay" after having killed both Kenny and Jane.
Jane getting a hug and Clem being utterly confused by a boy's compliment.
Sam's death. Just, shit.
It's hard for me to even look at this picture without tearing up...
It would of been even worse if the dog had lasted longer as a friendly dog.
The two that stand out for me was having to put Sam down and having Luke drown in the frozen lake.
Most of this season's deaths were relying on shock-value so it was hard for me to feel much of anything.
I agree with the sentiment that the end of season 2 was very emotional if you liked Kenny, whether you shot him or had one of the Wellington endings.
Not season 1 levels of emotional. But saying goodbye to Kenny got me to tear up once again.
