Why is Larry such a jerk?

I know he says he's only 'trying to protect his daughter'
but it seems to be a lot more than that. I'm not sure
what other reasons he has. Any ideas?

  • He knows what Lee did and doesn't trust to Lee because he thinks that Lee is a danger to the group. I think that it's good enough reason to act like he did.

  • Lee was a murderer before the whole apocalypse. Obviously that's an issue and honestly I can understand him and his reasons.

  • While jumping out of a chopper in Nam Larry accidently landed on a bunny rabbit. This made Larry sad. Sad people are sometimes jerks.

Well, he's got charm coming out of his ass, right? That means the shit has to come out of somewhere, so it comes out of his mouth instead.

Judging by his wedding ring he keeps in his pocket, he's likely still grieving from the loss of his partner, and the added pressure with the sudden zombie apocalypse, his heart condition, and having to watch out for his only family left alive likely didn't help.

Come to think of it, it's all about perspective as well. Larry's an antagonist because he's against our side, but for good reasons considering that we're playing as a murderer, and we had no real reason to believe that he might not be a good guy the entire time. Suppose if Larry was the player character from Day 1 in the drug store, and we see a murderer barge their way into the group with a child, we would be suspicious and untrusting too.

    Still a good comment.

Yet it's possible to intentionally get people who have helped you killed in the game. Many players save only those group members who they like the best and more or less actively allow others to die. Sure Larry punched Lee and was willing to let him die, but Lee can actively participate to Larry's murder. Considering that, I don't see Larry any worse than Kenny and Lee (determinant) were.

  • But there's a difference between not saving a person and actively getting him into a position in which he's very likely to die. Larry had no reason whatsoever to punch Lee at this moment other than his personal grudge.

  • Larry was trying to protect the group from Lee, because he didn't trust to Lee at that point. Maybe it wasn't a good call, but Larry isn't all bad. It is also possible that Larry saves Lee early in the Episode 2 when Lee is attacked by a walker.

A lot of people here trying desperately to tie in a "charm out of my ass" joke with why he's such a bitter person.

Didn't he explain why he's so spiteful? Wasn't it to ensure his daughter and to some extent Clementine would be safe? And even Lilly confirms this in Starved for Help.

"My dad can be an ass sometimes, I know that. But he's not a bad guy. He's just got a lot of pain. Yeah he's bitter and hateful, but that's all just to protect himself... and me."

  • Everybody's always going on about Larry and Lilly and Kenny...

What about that girl Clementine? She'd put bugs on your pillow and call you a crybaby afterwards.

If there's any jerk in this story it's that little monster.

  • He isn't,

He was in the army, if you been through that experience you get thick skin because you got more on your mind than people's precious feelings.

  • Larry's a jerk to make the choice of whether to save him or not harder for the player. Although the PC may not like Larry, if you typically side with Lilly then regardless of your own personal feelings towards Larry, you're more inclined to help save him b/c he's Lilly father (and Lilly is your friend).

But Larry's attitude towards Lee can simply be just b/c Lee is a convicted murderer. Typically, a person's is seen as only as good as their worst [or socially unacceptable] deed or attribute...that particular action/trait defines who you are in entirety. Lets say someone rapes another person...it was only one time and it's been 25+ yrs since said rape occurred. That person, no matter how much good they do in redemption for having raped someone in the past, is always going to be seen as a rapist and nothing else...same goes for murderers....So, Larry doesn't trust Lee for the same reason most of us tend to not forgive or look past the fact that someone in particular has a violent felony (or any type of felony for that matter)....Larry sees Lee as nonredeemable...that fact that he killed once means that he will likely kill again no matter the circumstances involved in his crime.

  • I dunno about all the comments above me...he did pretty much try to get me killed by leaving me for the walkers in Episode 1. I tried to be nice...but he even got mad when I didn't give him some crackers!
    Poor Larry ;( cri

  • Either it was lazy writing, or meant to be irony Kenny kind of became Larry.

  • Correction: If you wish to call Kenny a piece of shit, you must call him a shitbird. It's his signature.

While I agree and he barely gets any sympathy from me, CrazyGeorge is correct. Larry was in the military, so that probably made him a lot more cynical than he originally was.

    1. Larry knows Lee is a murderer and suspects Lee will do something to Lilly and even Clem. (And I don't give a shit what happens to you, but if something happens to my daughter or that little girl you got, then you better watch your ass Lee Everett. ~Larry)
    2. He lost his wife before the ZA, hardening him even more and making Lilly the only thing in the world he cares about. (You can see his ring after the saltlicking)
    3. Before the ZA, he was in the army and obviously that had a role in making him who he was. (My dad's not a bad guy, he's just got a lot of pain. ~Lilly)
    4. His heart condition. It makes him cranky. Especially with limited resources, he didn't know if he'd always have the meds needed.
    5. The ZA. It's a freaky thing.
