I gotta admit. I giggled a little I don't dislike Arvo but just because of how weirdly out of place and random this scene was. You could tell the writers just shoved it in there and wanted to give us another reason to hate Kenny which ended up lost on most.
...Suddenly I'm reminded of why I don't come here much anymore.
Look, from a guy who likes Arvo and understands what he did and why, he's far from innocent (nearly every character is). Sure Kenny definitely didn't need to beat him, but even though Arvo shot Clem for vengeance for his sister (or to stop Clem from attracting Jane or Kenny), he didn't have to do it and he'll have to carry that weight.
Well, He isn't Innocent, But he isn't evil. He's just misunderstood.
He is not really innocent. Maybe he was innocent before his sister died. But endangering Clementine in any way or form usually puts too much fan hatred on a character. Ben also got quite a bit of hatred because of this. I had no problem with Ben running away from the zombies to save himself. But many people got angry because he left Clementine behind.
In my opinion Arvo is a survivor just like anyone else. Sure he shot Clementine, but maybe he felt guilty after shooting her. Because he didn't shoot again.
Also Kenny beating up Arvo was some macho bullshit. Beating up a man whose hands are tied is not right. I think that this made people empathize with Arvo.
I wouldn't care if he is innocent and feels guilty, he shot Clem on purpose, he needs to die.

Trying to be part of an ambush to steal and potentially kill the entire group in one fell swoop and shooting Clementine after he tried to conspire to again rob and leave several people to a slow painful death. And everything there could've been ironed out if not for him lodging a rifle bullet into Clementine's shoulder.
And here's the thing, I know people don't hold him accountable but blame the writers. That makes no sense though, since we straight up saw him do it in the episode, so although the writers wrote him to do it, not blaming him for the actions written for him would be like saying the St. Johns were just written to be complete bastards. Arvo may have been a crutch to further Kenny's involvement in the story (even though he had long since outstayed his welcome) but his character is still very much responsible for all the shit he gets. Arvo is a complete scumbag and a gutless coward.
The only reason anyone is feeling this utter hatred is because we were in Clementine's shoes. If we were in Arvo's shoes his actions would seem far more understandable to you

We better blame J.T. Petty, the writer of ep 4, because he made such a bullshit story and gameplay in the episode. No choice in episode 4 matters, no matter what you did to Sarita, Kenny still blames you. No matter if you saved Sarah, she still dies. No matter if you didn't rob Arvo, he still accuses you for stealing. What's point of holding the baby, why is it a major choice? I dunno what to think about shooting Rebecca or not, I think it's just ok.
