Yeeeeeeeah!
Just redownloaded and installed ep 1,2 and 3. Then started the game. Switched to episodes downloaded and installed ep 5 and afterwards ep 4 ingame. It worked. now i can play! But i think when i'm done with ep 5 and try to start the game another day, making some other choices it will show me black screen again. Hope this will work for you guys too so you can at least play ep 5 threw one time. Greetings from Germany

Just wrote some emails to the support... that was the answer haha they are telling me the one thing i posted couple seconds ago... but read for yourself:
Hi Markus,
I apologize for the inconvenience. This is a known issue tied to save data that we are currently investigating, and our only solution at this time is to delete all your save data for Game of Thrones in the XMB and start a new game. If you have Playstaion Online Plus, you can upload your saves there before deleting them locally on your PS3.
Some PS3 users have reported that uninstalling and reinstalling may resolve this issue temporarily. Another user recently reported that they redownloaded and installed Episodes 1, 2, and 3, started the game, then downloaded and installed Episode 5 from the in-game menu. Selecting which episodes to install whether in-game or out of the game may resolve this issue to allow you to play Episode 5. If you do find a successful workaround following these steps or if you still encounter issues, please let us know and we will investigate further.

Hi I just downloaded Game of Thrones Episode 5:A Nest of Vipers and when I try to run the game I get a black screen. I have to restart my ps3 each time. I have purchased a season pass from the PSN and haven't experienced problems till now. I just want to play the game so any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
It was doing this to me before Episode 5 was even available. I tried redownloading the episodes and it started working fine until I had managed to get Episode 4 reinstalled. Then it went back to crashing immediately upon opening the game.
Because of this, I believe the problem lies in Episode 4's coding rather than Episode 5's.

I went through the same problem. I have PS4 but all my previous episodes are on the ps3 and I didn't want to lose my choices. I got through episode 3 fine. Then the black screen happened after I downloaded episode 4. I deleted it and reinstalled it and it was the same black screen. I didn't feel like losing all my choices in the previous episodes so I didn't want to delete my save file so I ended up deleting the game and then reinstalling it. For episode 4 when it asked for the updated i cancelled it . It asked a few times and I kept clicking cancel, and eventually it let me play the episode.
So the problem does seem to lie with the episode 4 update. After I downloaded episode 5 today I figured maybe this episode would work fine so I clicked on the update after I downloaded it, and the same black screen came up again. Annoying as hell. So now i'm reinstalling it again, not going to do the update and hopefully it will play . This problem is ridiculous. As long as I don't do the update it seems to play fine.

Thread: ps3 game won't start. Just a permanent black screen.
My other post must've got deleted. I can't seem to play game of thrones. Everytime I try to start it, it freezes on a black screen. It's very frustrating.
Ok, I'm surprised that Tell Tale staff have not figured this out yet. I had this same problem back when they brought out Episode 4 and fixed it myself. Here's what you do:
Go to your XMB and delete the Game of Thrones app.
Then go to PS Store and to view downloads. Find the Episode 1 Demo. Install and download it. You should be able to start Game of Thrones again. Then go to Episodes and choose to download Episode 1. You can't download any of the other episodes yet until you do this. Make sure to download the Episode 1 that is not the demo. After you've downloaded and installed it go back to the Game of Thrones app and download them all again in turn. They should all work including Episode 5.

Not when I play. If you did it exactly as I said and it still doesn't work, must be a file system issue with your PS3. A full system recovery might be in order.
So it's 11AM now in Germany and Episode 5 still isn't avaliable in the PSN Store. When i try to start GoT (first 4 episodes installed) I end up on a black screen. I was hoping to find some help here, but the only solution seems to be deleting the whole game and installing the first 3 episodes, so you can start the game and install episode 5 from inside the game. And this doesn't even mean that the bug gets fixed, because if you restart the game again, you'll end up on a black screen again.
Besides, I noticed that the performance of the PS3 version isn't as good as in the PS4 version (i watched my friend play it on a PS4). I think the graphics in this game are nothing a PS3 couldn't handle, so i guess it's just a bad port.
Sorry for complaining, but I didn't pay for the Season Pass for torturing myself every time a new episode is released. Please Telltale, don't announce a release date and then release a broken game! I think I speak for everyone here, if i say that I gladly would wait a few more days, if it means i get a working game.
Not when I play. If you did it exactly as I said and it still doesn't work, must be a file system issue with your PS3. A full system recovery might be in order.
I tried this with episode 4 originally. I could play it once then I got the black screen. For this to work correctly am I suppose to delete the games save file under the Saved Data Utility? I work all week so I don't have the time to spend hours and hours replaying each episode just to make my choices again so I don't want to lose my save files.

There is no guarantee that deleting your saves will fix the problem. I mean, I want all my choices the way they are so even if I did have the patience to play through again making all the same decisions(which I did twice after TWD S1 corrupted and deleted all my saves in episodes 2 and 4) the problem could be with one of my choices or a combination of my choices if the problem is the save file. All I can do is wait for this four month investigation to produce results.

Expect legal action to be taken. I bought the game. I expect it to work. It's been broken for months with no resolution in sight. "Delete and reinstall" is not a solution. Especially since the game freezes no matter what you do. You continue ahead, you get a solid black screen and a forceful restart. You don't install the updates, but the game freezes at certain points all across. Now, either you will fix the break your company has caused, or refund me my season pass, or alternative actions will be pursued. I hope others will follow with similar demands.
You've sold a broken product to hundreds/thousands. You should be punished for that.
I didn't trust it enough to chance deleting them. I ended up having to do same thing with TWD season 1 as well, though I only replayed all the episodes once and I just don't have the patience to do that again with GoT. Earlier I tried playing it offline without the update like I had to do with episode 4.. It would let me in the game but it kept freezing in the same spot at the beginning while showing what happened on the previous episode. So anyways I ended up deleting the game app, then I reinstalled the demo and episode 1 ,2, 3, and 5 then I did the update 1.08 and it seems to be working now. Didn't lose my save files... Just finally started episode 5 and it seems to be working fine now but I'm not sure if i'll be able to go back into it again after I play it once though.

No, Telltale should fix this already. I have done nothing wrong here, I'm not going to be the one to do the work when I'm also the one paying the money for it.
I got home from work at 3 today and set about this ridiculous deleting and reinstalling nonsense yet again. It's now almost 9 and it just got done redownloading and installing all the episodes as I've had to do for the last two episodes as well. Except this time it didn't even work like it has before. So after four months of no help whatsoever and us being way more than patient I am officially pissed off. At the very least we deserve some kind of refund as we've tried to be understanding for much longer than is remotely acceptable. Not only is it wrong to take people's money for a product that doesn't even work, you should be ashamed to have so epically failed your fans and for so long.
Flag it as offensive. It's the truth. The fact that they have sold a broken game on PS3, and they continue to push it without any true notice or update, they deserve all the ill-fortune coming their way. I want a refund for my season pass. I paid my money, they delivered a broken product that they can't fix. I've worked in retail management a good portion of my life, and when someone brings in a broken product, you either replace it with a brand new one, replace it with a similar product at no cost, or you give them back their money and offer them an incentive to return as a customer. Telltale hasn't offered any of these options. Episode 4 didn't work. Episode 5 doesn't work. The Game is one giant black screen. They need to answer for this.
This is ridiculous I've uninstalled and reinstalled the game more than 3 times already ,it is now 9:00pm and i still can't play the game please help! or refund me.
I had already uninstalled and reinstalled with no luck then went and deleted the game and got it to launch JUST started episode 5, after it installed I had to go and delete the save file AGAIN (it autosaved when I launched it to check) and now I have 5 going. Seriously need a patch though, at this rate it seems like you have to delete your save each time you want it to launch. I'm playing through the series again later just running through 5 with autochoices generated hopefully I won't have to delete the game again, I'll post on Friday with results

it happens if you rename save file and if you have more than 1 save file you need to have one not two or 3 or 4
I am pretty sure you're right. After deleting my save data the game starts.
I went through the same problem. I have PS4 but all my previous episodes are on the ps3 and I didn't want to lose my choices. I got through episode 3 fine. OMG! I feel so frustrated! How does that happen??? It's like this for weeks actually in my case!
Well if you look at the date of the OP, this has been a known issue for four months.

I can't find an episode 1 demo in my download list. It should also work if i download the whole first episode, or does it make a difference?
It makes a difference the demo actually contains 1.2GB of game data. Download it first. I think you can search for it. Try that.
Never mind, the file is 1.2 GB, so it should work. Thanks for the reply
I'm getting the exact same thing...

Careful now, last time I threatened legal action they flagged it as offensive.
Same here, looks like it's a bug!
Can't play the game until this is fixed
I'm having the same problem, except it was after I downloaded episode 5.
Delete your save data. It sucks and sounds like troll science but it worked for me.

Having the same issue. Currently reinstalling and hoping this game will work.
Same here dude. We need answers ASAP.
It's incredibly annoying! Especially since episode 5 came out already.
Same here.
