Do you think Clementine's placement in the series 100% fan service?

As the title says, do you think Clementine's placement in A New Frontier is 100% fan service?

  • Yes, she has no reason to be there, she feels really out of place.

  • No. She's still a major character and I'm pretty sure Telltale has always known that Clem would be in the next season. It's a mix of wanting to continue Clem's story but also wanting something new.

  • Yes!

ANF's story is so half-assed it's literally blowing my mind how Telltale could commit financial suicide with what they did to the series. If I'm being honest? Clementine's being treated as a side character so much in this game that completely writing her off would change only a small portion of the story.

  • With the choices she has made in season 3, she wouldn't stand a chance irl so yeah. She is 100% fan service

  • She's more like a cheap way to make more sales with false advertisement.

  • Not enough I would say.

Give me enough fan service to maker her the main character, cause this is bullshit.

  • Yes, even in ep3, other than the flashback scene, it seemed she was added for no reason. We need her to be in the season as a main charecter, telltale please...

  • Yeah pretty much, except that they're putting most of the effort into javis story which is why clems doesn't seem to be important.

  • Sure she isn't the driving influence and it's definitely Javier's story but she's still a big part of it.

  • Of course, how else would you attract your audience back to the series if not by using an icon character?

  • I am hoping that they will do some sort of switch next season, so Javier can be a secondary character, who will ACTUALLY change based on your choices this game, and then older Clem as protagonist, I really want to see Javier from Clems point of view, and it would also make Clems place in this season make more sense (although it makes alot of sense to me).

Also, I just wanna have a season about protecting AJ, I think it would be interesting, since he is alot younger than CLem was

  • I'm sure you can do better than making crap up to prove your point.

  • Yeah I think so too. I think this series is better off without her

  • I think her relevance to the story will become more noteworthy now down the line, she just needs more screentime. I'd like it if the roles swap again in Season Four (Javi is the secondary main character with Clementine the primary player character again).

Unfortunately she doesn't fit in. Most of it doesn't even make any sense. No matter which ending you choose for S2 E5, she will always be at the same place at the same time (in our case it's causing the truck to crash).

When they announced a different playable character, I was already sensing that they made a major mistake. I believe THE ONLY reasons that Javier is here is because Telltale simply couldn't faciliate our extremely diverse options in S2 EP5. To be playing as this brand new character when you've literally been with Clementine for the past two seasons doesn't make any sense at all. Why would people be playing sequels before the first game? Imagine playing Mass Effect 3 before Mass Effect 1 or 2. This next line is my opinion which I've said before, I believe that if you're playing/watching a sequel first, you're doing it wrong.

Clementine is just so scattered by S2 EP5 endings. Telltale took the easy way out and the management for who decided this route should be ashamed of themselves. Heck, I'm only 19 years old but I sure as hell wouldn't ruin one of my most popular series by taking the easy way out. Clementine really is out of place here and what they've advertised is INCREDIBLY misleading here. Take this your own way but I really believe that you aren't playing Clementine here. She's only here to try and cater to the fans, I don't believe what Telltale has said about this series being catered towards new people, I think he's only here because they couldn't be bothered to continue the branching paths. They really had a chance to make these paths go into your own story. Like fucking hell, could you just imagine continuing your OWN STORY with Kenny? Or y'know trying to survive at Howe's hardware with Jane? They went for a one story line here and let's be honest with how diverse S2 EP5's ending were, it's almost impossible to make fans happy with pushing for a 'One story' type of deal. Yeah it's going to cost more but you PUT YOURSELF in this situation by committing yourself to all of these endings in S2 EP5.

TL&DR; Very, VERY out of place. Mostly for fan-service it seems.

Maybe it's just me, I have my own series directly inspired by Season 1. I wish we could go back to those times...

That bar scene was so fucking stupid, my Clementine would never shoot someone like that, not even by accident. I hope she redeems herself for that.

  • At this stage, yes.

But we have two episodes to go and the potential to reunite with AJ. So I have high hopes she'll have better screen time (In terms of both more screentime and a more satisfying treatment of her as a character itself).

  • I couldnt agree more, Clementine has been shown as ruthless at times, which I think is fine, after all, the world she is living in, its hard to stay completely innocent forever, although I would say she is doing a decent job of being a decent person, but her shooting a person like that seemed so out of character, didnt Lee teach her proper trigger discipline? there is no way Clementine would fire a gun like that, even if she thought the bullets were fake, that one instance is the only time I would say that Clementine acted completely out of character

Absolutely. There's no reason for her to be in ANF other than to appease fans.

  • Absolutely, it's pretty clear Telltale wanted to wipe the slate clean and start over, but didn't have the balls to exclude the fan favourite.

I would have prefered they just stuck with her, people care about her for the same reason they care about Rick, it's the main character we had from the start.

  • edited April 2017

I would say it's factual she's just here to throw a bare bone to old fans. She either disappears for half the episode and appears contributing nothing to the plot or she's just there with 2 minute meaningless flashbacks.

  • edited April 2017

She won't stop begging for fights with the new frontier, though. Even at the junkyard she would still fight them alone if you left her. Ima that is just reckless and also out of character as season 1 and 2 clem wouldn't want to get into any fights or kill anybody, even the saint johns, even if she does eat mark's leg, so the new frontier is no exception

  • Yes. Absolutely.

Telltale were too lazy to make branching paths from the S2 endings so they created a new character. They false advertised the shit out of this one. Playable Clem? Clem is a major character? No character will take the backseat? Yeah... no. I'm sorry Telltale but this is my last game from you (unless of course Clementine becomes protagonist again in a potential S4 perhaps).

  • In my opinion i feel they should've done a tales from the borderlands dual playability dynamic. Both characters get equal playability and screen time with relevance to the plot.

  • Yeah definitely. Clem keeps re-appearing whenever she leaves the story if only for fan service, especially after choosing certain choices (seriously why keep coming back?). Her reason in the game tied to the New Frontier is poorly written and horribly done. Also every flashback was terrible ranging from ugly character models, incredibly short playable time, and choices mattering not even in the slightest. Should've just ended her story at S2.

I think that's what we were all expecting honestly. They really should've done the dual playability dynamic.

  • This is my dream for season 4, since we now sorta know Javier as a character.

I would also really like to have more personal involvement with AJ, since he is the character apart from Clementine that I care most about, they could also probably deliver better on a suiting personality for Javier with our A New Frontier choices, since its just 1 season.

  • Probably, I think it would have been best if they had either completely gotten rid of her, or just solely followed her.

  • If they actually did this it would be its own stand-alone game. If Clementine + AJ wasn't involved in the story at all in ANF, then this might of well have been a similar Michonne story. I think it would have been a good step in the direction so they could actually focus on our S2 EP5 endings for SEASON 3.

  • They should have retired Clem's character after Season 2 as they have basically murdered her character and pointless existence in this new game. Either that or hand over the development to a game who know what they are doing and actually know how to write a decent game

  • Heh, they should just have made a "here comes CLEMENTINE!" DLC where she pops into the story randomly and has a little sitcom jingle.

Would have sold better than the main game.
