I think the stranger put it in there. Just before you go in the first time you see his shadow run past behind you. I think he se it as a trap for Lee when he came back, but Lee bypassed it at first because he and Molly had to escape across the roof.
My first thought was Molly, but the stranger was stalking Lee and he was a hunter. He knew how to set traps, and he must've seen Lee was out alone, good chance to pick him off from campmans point of view, as Clem wasn't with him.
I don't think he knew about Molly though, and didn't figure on them heading back a different way.
