  • One thing that should be tweaked is the levels of the Telltale Talk section.
I've never used the Forum Games subsection and never knew we had a comics subsection here too. But I don't plan on using them anytime soon. Having to click the Talk section to load a page, and then click the General section to see the discussions on a new page every single time I jump into this section is not fun. At least put links to the Games and Comics subsections in the General section from the start. No other section prompts you to open another page when you go into it.

  • mostlypoptarts was hoping to eventually update that, so you are in luck. :)

  • I am glad that Telltale tried to satisfy the general of members of the website by changing up the design and all that—but I honestly find this layout so confusing, to the point that it discourages me from wanting to keep up with the forum. I'm not even sure what pulls me off, but something just does.

I almost always visit the forum on mobile devices, and, I know it's an extremely unpopular opinion, but I was fine with the 2016 layout. I even preferred it over the previous layout when it first came out around July.

It would have been nice to make this a beta instead of forcing everyone to use it. You could have just put a 'beta' button next to the my account button while those who dislike it can stay with the old version. Personally I'm disliking it already. I don't like that I can't see my own comments in 'my account' anymore either.

Either I missed this, or there was no community insight that an update was going to happen. Please make me aware if I am wrong here.

This is very confusing as well, although I'd expect within a few weeks I'd get used to it.

  • But this requires you that you go to the top of the page everytime you want to view it. This kinda puts me off a little because the my account button is always static - I'd just click that and go straight to my comments.

Also, where are my likes?! D:

Alright so, it's no secret that many here seem to dislike the changes. Having put some thought into this, I came upon one example that perfectly sums up what is wrong with the linear discussion style, why it is a major downgrade to what we had before and why it is wholly insufficient as a replacement, making a confusing mess out of any discussion.

Posting it with permission, here is a screenshot I took of a recent conversation from the Megathread:
    https://i.imgur.com/8LYDtGx.png

Now, this is confusing, I know, so allow me to explain. Here is a post made by Dont_Look_Back about several friends who have passed away in a recent accident. In the previous system, users were directly able to reply to this post and their replies were seen right below it. Still visible on the screenshot are dojo and imighthavebrokenit who offer their condolences and further below, there are others who do the same. The whole conversation was easy to overview, as it was perfectly clear to whom they were talking and what the occasion was. Now, conversations are all mixed up with each other and instead of having replies below the post they belong to, we get this mess you can see on my screenshot. Around the same time Dont_Look_Back made their post, MetallicaRules replied to a completely different post about sports, that just happened to be in the same thread. By the time these comments have been made, they have been perfectly fine, clearly separated from each other, it was immediately clear that MetallicaRules has been talking about a sport topic and was not part of the same conversation as Dont_Look_Back. Now, these two and pretty much every other discussion in the Megathread have been all mixed together creating a glaring and confusing mess, especially if two conversations with such heavy differences in tone have their replies mixed together.

Admittedly, this is a particularly serious example, but certainly not the only occasion. In fact, I'd say you'll have a hard time showing me a single topic that has actually improved from this update, or will improve in the future. Look at the example I just gave and tell me, where is the improvement? Because if there is, I'm surely not seeing it. Hoping for a change in the next four years might be naive, but still, if the people in charge could see this, maybe they'd agree that using linear discussion causes significantly more problems than it fixes.

  • @LiquidChicagoTed

Perfect example. Jarring and embarrassing, really.

  • People will get used to it. The quote system worked fine for me for the past ~23 years. I got used to this "new" system, folks will get used to my "old" system.

  • edited October 2017

Well, one problem this fixes is that sometimes reply chains would be so long that there wouldn't be any color/position difference between replies and everything would just blend in as one really. When that happened it was literally impossible to recognize who was talking to who. And when I say "literally impossible" I actually mean that there was literally no way to figure it out.

  • That's naturally going to happen early on when discussions used to be in Reddit format. When more threads are made to support linear comments, stuff like that wont happen.

Not to mention, when the forums swtiched to Reddit comments in 2013, people said the exact same types of comments about linear being better than Reddit. You just need to get used to the changes.

I feel the same, when the Reddit style layout first released in 2013 i didn't like it and it took me a while getting used it it and i am happy to see a more traditional forum style layout again.

  • Ughhh this feels like Reddit :s Can we get the layout we had like, a few days ago?

  • constant endless scrolling and chuckles indeed..

Click the Paragraph mark and select quote. Or just type > Now whenever I reply I need to copy and paste every single comment? I already know half this forum isn't going to do that so coming here will be constant endless scrolling.

  • I've had a few negative things to say about this update and I do plan to touch on them, but let me get my praises out of the way.

I love the messaging system, it's great. The notification system is awesome when I actually get notifications, it's so cool. It's clear to me that a lot of work was put into this and with good intentions, but I really cannot bring myself to enjoy the new update, I'm sorry.

Before this update I was complaining about the forum games section not getting enough attention and wow, I have to give it to you guys, you found a way to get attention towards them (kudos for that) but made it a lot more difficult to run one. I'm pretty sure you've heard the complaint before already and you're really wishing I'd shut up because wow, I'm rarely around for anything but complaining, but the main post. The main post is where I kept all my information for my story, just as others have done for theirs and it is a major inconvenience to not have. It's not only interfering with stories but general threads too, crazy.

I adored the layout of the former update because it made things more orderly and it didn't feel like a typical forum. A good example of why I cannot and will not get used to this layout is the screenshot @LiquidChicagoTed provided. Now, hear me out, it's extremely unlikely that people are going to look in the bottom corner for the pint size print "in reply to Dont_Look_Back" or not. When I first saw the screenshot, I was a little upset myself because what's the point of maintaining order if accidents like that are going to happen? I know MetallicaRules was not talking to Dont_Look_Back, but anyone who isn't looking for the print in the corner is not going to realize that and it's very likely problems will occur from that.

And the activity thread, I have no words for that. I think it was a great idea but I also feel like the Megathread had that covered. One thing I don't like about it is how apparently your comments become your bio. I have not tried this out myself and I don't intend to. (And a three character limit??? what?)

All I'm trying to say is that this update was provided with good intentions, I am aware of that, but it's really not a good update besides what I've pointed out earlier. (That's my opinion.)

...wait, so this feels more like Reddit, as opposed to the old forums that had Reddit style comments?!? :p

(Also - scrolling isn't endless - we still have thread pages)

That's not going to keep happening once people actually start adjusting to the linear thread layout.

Why in the hell is it okay for this reply to go at the bottom of the page.

  • That's not going to keep happening once people actually start adjusting to the linear thread layout.

A forum is described as a place, meeting, or medium where ideas and views on a particular issue can be exchanged. Basically a place for communication and I can see how the layout is going to limit communication because in order to avoid accidents like that, you'd have to wait for a conversation to finish or cut the conversation off. I think it's great to encourage conversation but what isn't so great is when you can't join a conversation that you're actually interested in because you weren't around when it was going on and somebody else is already talking about something different.

A good example of why I cannot and will not get used to this layout is the screenshot @LiquidChicagoTed provided. That's not going to keep happening once people actually start adjusting to the linear thread layout.

No offense but this forum looks straight out of 09 internet, there's a reason your system is the old one.

  • edited October 2017

That's naturally going to happen early on when discussions used to be in Reddit format. When more threads are made to support linear comments, stuff like that wont happen.

Not to mention, when the forums swtiched to Reddit comments in 2013, people said the exact same types of comments about linear being better than Reddit. You just need to get used to the changes.

First of all, I am aware that people have to get used to this. However, this does not mean that these changes are for the better, or an improvement in any way. They have to get used to an outdated system that has been removed for good reason in 2013. I know, once people indeed get used to it the initial uproar will fade. However, is this a good thing then? Does it make threads any less confusing?

See the example I have brought up. Of course it is easy to say that once people get used to the new system, such issues won't come up anymore. However, think about it. Imagine a situation in which one person wishes to write about a serious topic, a tragic one even. Another person in the same thread wants to reply to a more light-hearted conversation, probably with some jokes inbetween. There is the first post about the serious topic and it is the kind one would usually reply in kind, maybe offering condolences and the like. What is the other user going to do? The new system would force him to either set his reply below the serious post, creating a mess like the one I brought up as an example. Or he is forced to wait until other users have posted something that is more appropriate to be located below this serious post, meaning he cannot immediately continue his own conversation,

The previous system has been very well-suited for such situations. Just because people have to get used to this change of system doesn't mean that it is a good thing that should be praised. There are severe issues this update has brought and some types of conversation simply won't be possible anymore without continuing to create a messy mixture of different conversations, making it hard to have longer discussions and to follow them. Surely there can be a solution to this, but the current way is no solution.

I am very curious though, what exactly were the arguments back then, in favour of the linear style? I have been part of several forums using linear style, each of them feeling inferior to handle several topics at once when compared to the style we just lost. And as such, I simply cannot think of an argument that seriously shows why linear discussions as a whole are better.

  • It's not really outdated. The "new" Bethesda(arguably, with Rockstar, as the biggest game developer out there) forum looks almost exactly like this.
