Yes and perhaps they could sticky the suit filed against them by Walt Disney Studios for slander while they're at it.

I'm just a customer so maybe I'm wrong in my opinion, but I think that not only would such a endorsement of such a topic be treading legal thin ice, but it just doesn't seem relevant enough to Tales itself to warrant a sticky. If Telltale doesn't want the discussions, they'll probably just shut down the topics and ask that people not start arguments on the forum.

Honestly the problem with the two sequels and why they weren't as good as the first POTC was pacing. They just crammed way too much stuff into each movie. There was no breathing room in the movies at all. It was just cut from one zany chase/fight to the next. If they had cut down on a lot of that mess and focused more on the story and dialog then they would have been a lot better. Also, giving Will and Elizabeth the axe after the first movie probably would have been a good move as well.

Anyway...I've really been meaning to read On Stranger Tides for a long while now. I'll definitely have to get to it now.

Agree with you there, I never cared for Orlando Bloom, and Elizabeth, really now? I always liked James Lilek's review of the movies. He's like, "It’s funny to see Keira Knightly have sword fights with grown men. Her head would be bouncing on the deck before she got her blade up to sternum level."

And they could dump Captain Jack as well. I'd rather see a movie with Barbossa as the main. Rush was the only one of the main guys who looked like he was having fun in POTC3.

Tim Powers has confirmed earlier rumors with the following news: "I can now say that Disney optioned On Stranger Tides and will use elements of the book in the fourth Pirates of the Caribbean movie. I can also say that I did not ever specify that Serena and I get parts in the movie or have dinner with Johnny Depp! (Not that we'd mind.)"

Ugh, they should have quit while they were ahead (figuratively) after the first movie, but enough people are dumb enough to go to the sequels they make a profit even though those movies...I was going to say suck, but actually they're better than lots of stuff in theaters these days which is why I don't go to the movies much.

good because I hated Jack Sparrow.. why does a "supposed" drunk act so gay? Nothing against gay people, but that's not good acting

Depp doesn't "act gay", he is basically just parodying Rolling Stones guitarist Keith Richards. Also, being drunk and being gay are mutually exclusive?

It's not the director, but Disney Chairman Dick Cook's resignation.

The last movie made almost a billion dollars. A billion freaking dollars, and that's not even counting the zillions of dollars they made off of toys, video games, grog flavored doggy bones, clothes, etc. Come on now, if you were running the studio, would you have done the same? I' enjoyed the Pirates movies. They're far from perfect, but they're always fun.

And the Pirates movies made pirates cool again. Before they came out, the pirate genre was dead. And I have a feeling if the POTC movies never came out, we probably would not have seen any new MI games.

Tim Powers = Awesome. I believe anyone with a name like that should be automatically made a super secret agent or ninja. I'm guessing he already is. So shush!

Yeah, Pirates were out of the public mind only a few years back. Why haven't Pirates been cool lately? I guess this New generation can't stomach rough people doing whatever they can to get a leg up in the world. They are more depressed than any generation I've ever heard of, what is with the new gen?

Isn't the director of the new movie Guillermo Del torro?
I would have thought his style would be right up Johnny Depps street.

...but it won't be Pirates without Johnny Depp.

I don't know about you guys, but I don't care if pirates are considered "cool", especially if it means two really horrible movies that get shoved down my throat everywhere I go.

Read my link three posts above yours. It's not the director that is the problem.

If you thought the second one was "horrible", why did you see the 3rd? And how are the movies "shoved down your throat everywhere you go?"

As for Guillermo del Toro, he just signed with Disney to form a new brand called "Disney Double Dare You". There are RUMORS that he might produce the 4th Pirates movie.

The second movie felt like half of a film about twice its length. Because it ended on a mid-way climax, everything about its quality hinged on how well its set-up was concluded in the third film. This really created a disaster, because while the third film started out pretty nicely(unlike some, I could definitely follow the flow of who betrayed who just fine), it quickly went into territory where I think they had a million ideas and no time to really finish them all, and nobody came up to them to say "Hey, we need to cut back, this is making no fucking sense".

Oh, and my family really, really wanted to see it and wanted me to come with them. I've seen plenty of bad movies that way.

(Not that I hate seeing movies with my family. Just that my standards of movie-watching go down when really the point is to get to spend some time with them and they're likely to buy my ticket for me.)

Another thing I hated about the second set of films is that Jack Sparrow actually has a bit of character growth in the first and second movies, but by the start of the next film he's regressed into a character piece again to restore a profitable status quo.

How is it shoved down my throat? Pirates are mentioned, PotC comes up. Note the prevalence of PotC threads on this forum, for example. It's a popular film series, so conversations, merchandising, advertising, etc, are pretty damn ubiquitous. And now they're taking the title of my favorite piece of pirate literature. I'm sure bookstores will now bind the book in a cover with Johnny Depp on the cover and so soon I won't be able to talk about it without people thinking of it as that Pirates of the Caribbean book.

I do agree with you there, by #3, Sparrow's little act was rather tiresome. Thankfully the far more interesting Barbossa was given more to do in the film. I was hoping if they ever did a new Pirates film, they would either go prequel or spin off a character. A Barbossa film? One with Pintel and Ragetti? Eh? Anyone? And this director they have lined up. Um. He did Annie?

As for them slapping a movie cover on "Stranger Tides", it will help introduce alot more readers to the book. Mostly, I'm just super-curious how they're use the book for the movie, considering how different the POTC series and Stranger is.

Those ideas are FAR too interesting and not Depp-centric enough to warrant Disney funding.

I don't CARE who's introduced to the book. Especially if it's an audience of Depp fans, who will ruin the book for me.

    I'm sorry. :)

I didn't even MENTION them retroactively ruining the attraction in Disney World. :D

If Depp's reason for not doing the movie truly is the director, then Disney will find a new Director. It's as simple as that. Depp will be in PoTC 4.

I have to agree on the book cover thing.
I think my heart broke when i saw will smith on the "I am legend''s one.

That being said, i've got nothing remotely constructive to add.

What about Elijah Wood on the cover of Lord of the Rings?

I don't care who's on the cover of a book. It's still the same book.

I just find it hard to believe they're using a director with such a "meh" track record of films. Thankfully, it's really early in the film's production, so pretty much everything can (and will) change.

I'm sure Tim Powers cares. Solid gold houses don't buy themselves!

Well, it sure is no big deal, but it does bother me somehow. Makes me feel like the book becomes just another merchandising thingie when it's actually the basis for the whole thing.
I spent some month looking for K. Dick's "Do androids dream of electric sheep ?" before realizing they had renamed it into "blade runner". See what i mean ?
The book wasn't any less good in the end, it's just kind of annoying. Feels like the original stuff is being ripped off of its... Well, originality (in its "source material" sense).

Nothing is official at this point. My assumption will be that Disney will get Depp on the movie one way or another. Either they'll prove they already have him through contract, they'll appease him somehow, or they'll throw money at the problem until it gets fixed. My assumption is that this is a stunt to try and get more money out of Disney, but that's just my guess.

well Johnny Depp NEEDS more money, he's been doing really well for himself. I don't see him stopping anytime soon with the pirates movies, long as he gets more money
