Actually, my problem with the sequels was mostly because it was a lot less about Jack having crazy adventures. It was more about the fact that he happened to be involved in Will and Lizzie's crazy adventures. They really should've let those two kids go off an have a happy normal family after the first film and find some new victims for Jack to manipulate.

Not even that, just have Jack do his own thing.

I think this is kind of cool. Weird timing, since I just bought this book a few weeks ago and have hardly started reading it.

It actually seems like there's potential for a really good fit here... since for this next movie Jack is going off on his own and leaving the other characters of the first three films behind, there's definitely room for a bunch of new characters and scenarios, so co-opting large chunks of a cool pirate book... I think it'll work.

The idea that Monkey Island is "based" off this novel is really an insult. Some atmospheric cues were taken, here and there, the same as the Pirates ride at Disney.

    But wow.

    What the hell, Disney?

I've kind of given up on their Pirate franchise since the third film. The second felt like half a movie, and the third felt incomprehensible and downright messy. I loved the first movie because it took the ATMOSPHERE of the ride without adhering strictly to it, and made a great film that linked to a ride that I love.

Then it became popular. Worst thing to happen to the franchise, because it got horrible sequels and changed the ride. Really almost ruins my enjoyment of the first movie, which is the only one I own.

There is no way they're going to do On Stranger Tides any justice.

    No way in hell.

I'll wait to see who will be directing and writing this movie. I know Gore won't be directing it, so if they get a good enough director, who knows? It might be good.

Hmmm. Looks like Disney is working out a deal with Guillermo del Toro. Now if he gets his hands on this movie, there's a pretty good chance it will be good. :)

With yesterday's announcement of Pirates 4 being called On Stranger Tides, I immediately searched for a book of the same name figuring the title was just too strange to have appeared out of nowhere.

In 1988, a book by Tim Powers called On Stranger Tides was published. It's a fantasy book that won the Locus Award for Best Fantasy Novel in 1988 and was also nominated for The World Fantasy award.

Nobody online knew. Is there a connection between the title of Pirates 4 and this book? I contacted Tim Powers' literary agent and asked him if the new Pirates 4 has anything to do with Tim Powers' novel of the same name because nobody knows if it's a coincidence or not. While he wouldn't officially comment on it, he did tell me this:

"...I can tell you it is not a coincidence."

Ohh I hope this is so...I love his stuff :)

Wonder if the next movie is going to be a sequel or a prequel...I mean, if it isn't a coincidence and the movie IS going to be based on the book..then a lot of stuff won't make sense.

It will be interesting to see whether they follow the book directly, or just use it as inspiration.

    Lol!

.. anyway, a Monkey Island movie would be fun. Or maybe not? Dunno.. :)

There's a lot of incestuousness between POTC and MI.

However, if I hear "I'm Jack Sparrow, Mighty Pirate" in the movie theater, I'll leave.

Why would you leave? That would be AWESOME!

It would make Pirates 4 my alltime favourite movie.

I do hope that PotC:OST will be more in line with the first PotC rather than the other two. Well... alright, I really didn't have anything against Dead Man's Chest (well, besides all main characters becoming kinda pricky - that was kinda a bit of a letdown), but At World's End is just... well, it was just not it.

I mean, the thing that buggered me the most in PotC3 was the fact that people betrayed SO much eachother, that it the only one who didn't betray anybody was Mr. Gibbs and Governor Swann (and let's not forget that Mr. Gibbs has betrayed the crown somewhere between PotC1 prolouge and PotC1 main story).
Plus Davy Jones in a water bucket on land. That's just stupid - I mean, what's the point in having him not being let to get on land, when he can be on land in a bucket of water?
And the last battle was pretty much stupid. I mean, there were one hundred English ships against what, nine pirate? And because their flagship was destroyed and Dutchman kinda got on pirates side, they decided to run? That's stupid. I mean, even for some reason Dutchman is indestructible, all other pirate ships aren't. And the odds are 1 against 10.

So yeah, I really hope PotC4 will be more like PotC1. It had everything: a story nicely told (though it was not extraordinarily original, but is that kind of story really needed?), it didn't take itself too seriously (and didn't take itself as a blockbuster, though had some explosions), was pretty much logic, the characters were great, and Sparrow is at his prime there (I mean, come on, how can you, for example, ever forget the way his character is introduced, with that sinking boat?)

Man, they ripping Monkey Island so much off, they ripping even the ripping off off. Or something like that. Maybe that all just proofs that the guys behind PotC are all big MI nerds, and there is nothing wrong about that, is it?

About del Torro: Does anybody remeber the severed head in Hellboy 1? Or was it more than just the head?
Fun Fact: Steve Purcell went to school with Mike Mignola.

The last one made almost a billion dollars worldwide. Add in DVD sales, merchandise, and others, and this movie is a freaking cash-cow with very healthy udders.

People dressed up as pirates and fighting. And Johnny Depp. Yes....I will pay for that.

This should be quite interesting... I read the On Stranger Tides book quite recently after it was mentioned in a thread here and noticed that in the last POTC movie Sparrow is looking at a map of the Fountain located in Florida... which is where it is (and where a good deal of the action takes place) in the OST book. (Of course someone here was nice enough to point out that actually Florida is the mythical location anyway, didn't realise that. but anyway :P)

Not wanting to spoil the book (or the movie for that matter), so no details, but the plot will need some serious revisions to make it fit into the POTC world... even more so if they're bringing back the Knightley/Bloom characters (I kinda hope they don't tho). I wonder if the character of Blackbeard will feature, or if Sparrow will take over that role?

It could be made to be really good - there's a LOT of spooky MI2ish atmosphere in the book (voodoo is a MAJOR theme). Hopefully Disney don't make it tooo cheesy.

Agreed. I don't understand why these movies get so much shine. I mean, they're based on a ride. And all the love for Johnny Depp's phoned in Keith Richards impersonation, ahem, I mean "performance?" He's done much better work, and these garbage sequels are keeping him from going back to anything of substance. It reminds me of Tobey Maguire and the Spiderman movies. Franchises are where talented actors go to die.

Wait, are you talking about the Land Before Time movies? Fun fact: I went to school with the kids who voiced the little dinos.

    No. The POtC series.

Did you just imply that Tobey Maguire is a talented actor?

(Man, I wish there were a laughing emoticon right now.)

I was also surprised to read that.

Anyway, I'd say we petition for an extra for Dominic Armato. As in, Dominic would need to be random pirate mook dieing somewhere in the second half of the movie #14.

There was plenty of staff crossover between Monkey and Pirates, including the POTC screenwriters crossing paths with the canceled Monkey Island animated film in production at ILM (who ended up doing the effects work on the POTC films). Who knows how direct any of the influences actually are, but there's no way at the end of the day that Monkey Island didn't at least touch the Pirates films.

Hello? Monkey Island animated film at ILM? What!? This is the first I've heard of this and I can find no other reference to such a thing in the works? Can you qualify this with some facts or juicy rumours? Was any art work produced? How far did it get?

That would be 34 flavours of hilarity, but that would require convincing Dom to get in front of a camera.

Incidentally, I recall the first time I googled Dom's picture and got his old glam shot. My first thought was - 'Man, this guy could give Orlando Bloom a run for his money!'

Yeah, I may sound really ignorant but...

Can anyone give me an example of POTC ripping off Monkey island?

I dunno. But I don't really see the similarities so if anyone could tell me I would be really glad....

A lot of people compare Will to Guybrush, Barbossa to LeChuck, Elizabeth to Elaine, the crew of the Pearl to LeChucks ghost crew, and wholeheartedly believe that Ted Rossio, the screenwriter for POTC, ripped ideas from his script for a canceled Monkey Island movie and put them in POTC.

wait...Will and Guybrush? Oh no no...those characters are NOTHING alike. Guybrush is much more witty and funny while Will is just serious all the time. Heck, I can think that Jack and Guybrush are more alike than Guybrush and Will (which dosen't prove anything since still Jack is very diferent than Guybrush).

barbossa seemed similar to lechuck, but only in the first film as he seemed much diferent once he became a "good guy".

I don't think POTC rips off MI much at all, just similarities between pirate stuff. I don't think the new POTC will rip off MI at all.

Like most trilogies I watch (Well, Shrek and Spiderman), my opinion on the PotC series is as follows:

    1st one: Liked it
    2nd one: LOVED it
    3rd one: Meh
    But 4th one: ?

So, I'll just have to wait.
  • edited September 2009
I think the fourth one could be good. here are a couple of reasons why.

    1. Johnny Depp
    2. after reading the summary of OST, I don't see them bringing many characters from the first 3 back.
    3. I really like those Dark Piratey atmospheres.

I hope they get a good director. I don't want them to bring much more than Jack Sparrow back, otherwise I'm afraid it'll be horrible.

Yes! It's true! Marc Davis, who was one of the designers for the POTC ride could travel into the future! Using his powers, he traveled into the present, played the Monkey Island games and went back into the past to design the ride! That's how clever he was!

Other ways POTC ripped off MI.

MI had Pirates! POTC stole that!
MI had monkeys! POTC stole that!
MI had a young man who became a pirate of sorts. POTC stole that!
MI had an older guy who was a pirate! POTC sole that!
MI had treasure that the pirates wanted! POTC stole that!

    I see a lawsuit a'coming! :D
