What about Elijah Wood on the cover of Lord of the Rings?

Not quite the same though is it? Putting Depp on the cover of On Stranger Tides would be connecting it to a franchise it isn't a part of, and Smith on the cover of I Am Legend is linking the original to a film merely inspired by it. Whereas Lord of the Rings is a pretty faithful adaptation.

Whereas Lord of the Rings is a pretty faithful adaptation.

Just don't say that infront of LotR fans :p

A bit of off-topic, but, personally, I think that LotR movies are the best book-to-movie adaptations ever made. And though there's a LOT of stuff that isn't by the book, the spirit is there, the story is still there, and I think that's what really counts.

BTW, we still don't know if Depp's really involved and how close to the book On Stranger Tides is going to be.

I'd still say The Godfather is the best, mainly because no-one even knows that it WAS a book, the impact of the film was so great.

I always say that "The name of the rose" is one of the best book-to-film adaptation ever.

    A more accurate chart

    An even more accurate one:

(not that it's relevant now *hides*)

Before Pirates of the Carribean was even named PotC and didnt have Disney to put money into the project, as far as I know Jack Sparrow was not even in the script. Jack Sparrow was put into the script to make it less like Monkey Island. When Disney agreed to sponsor it, after reading the final script with Jack Sparrow in it and the idea of Johnny Depp playing him, they accepted it and it would be named after their ride so it would seem Disney related.

So to begin with, it was about a guy in love with a girl who got kidnapped by zombie pirates. Then there is the dog in the prison guarding the key? If that isnt inspired by Monkey Island, I dont know what is. Even seems to be the same race as the prison dog in the Monkey Island games.

But I love the movies and the games, and I am looking forward to the next movie. Could be that these PoTC movies was part of the reason why Monkey Island got revived. Certainly hadnt happened much the last decade, and suddenly we have a whole new Monkey Game and a remake of the original :)

Yarr! yohoho and a barrel o grog!

The dog was in the original POTC ride, way before SoMi.

There were pirates and pirate stories WAY before Monkey Island and Pirates of the Caribbean. We can argue who stole from who but the fact is they both stole from other works.

Wow, until reading this I was convinced that any similarities were simply co-incidence of two stories being told in similar settings.

But if there was to be a Monkey Island movie, and the same screenwriter wrote Pirates, that's pretty undeniable then.

Especially with Steve Purcells concept art showing scenes very similar to what happened in the pirates movie.

If you eliminate Jack Sparrow from Curse of the Black Pearl, you have Secret of Monkey Island (and On Stranger Tides, for that matter) with secondary characters chopped out.

This is why they should have axed the couple. Jack Sparrow's the main attraction and he has nothing to do with Monkey Island.

I honestly don't know how they're going to implement On Stranger Tides without re-telling Curse of the Black Pearl (perhaps minus Davy Jones/Will Turner).

Yeah, this is a case where the game obviously ripped of the ride, which the movie later adapted after the creation of the game but taking material from the original source material that pre-dates the game.

It depends how they plan to redistribute the roles from the novel. My thinking, for what it's worth, is that Blackbeard will become Barbosa and Jack Sparrow's role will be carved out of Phil Davies and Skank. If, as I think people have assumed, Jack Shandy were to be replaced with Jack Sparrow you'd end up with a such a different story (since Sparrow's motiviations are hardly going to be the same as Shandy's) that it wouldnt have been worth laying out cash for the rights

Nice. Seems the dog in Lechucks Revenge was inspired by that. In the movie PotC movie it was more similar to the ride, since the dog didnt give the pirates the key. In the first script, I am guessing he did get out by offering the dog a bone.

I dont care who stole what as long as its good entertainment. But PotC started out as a Monkey Island movie, untill that project didnt get any funding. But after rewritting the script, Disney put money into it.

What Jack says in this scene is a reference to the ride also.

He says something like "You can keep doing that forever, that dog is never going to move." which refers to the fact that in the ride, the dog literally cannot move. :p

probably I just didn't notice if it was mentioned here...

I'm looking forward to the movie, for two reasons:
1: You can never have too many swash-buckling pirate movies.
2: PotC is the closest we'll ever get to a Monkey Island movie.

Yeah exactly even if it isnt as good as the others its better than no pirate movies at all.

How about Who Framed Roger Rabbit? I would guess even fewer people realize it's based on a book. The movie M*A*S*H comes to mind as well; that was a book first too. (And heck, there are probably people who don't even know it was a movie before it was a TV series...)

I thought everyone knew Godfather was a book...... maybe its just because I LOVE books and assume everyone does too.

I watched all 3, and I enjoyed them all, so of course I will be watching this one. :)

I like pirate themed movies, I even like Cutthroat Island even though it was a movie flop.
