It's the Sea Monkey, not Mad Monkey.
And yeah, Captain Marley (Elaine's grandfather) and his crew were on a ship called Elaine. (MI2)
Grandpa Marley was never said to be governor and his name was never mentioned in the first 3 games, he was just referred to as "Captain Marley". So, these are the reasons why the "H.T." explanation doesn't make sense.
Crap, I should have noticed I mixed up the Mad Monkey and Sea Monkey. xD You'd think I'd've noticed that, seeing as I played SMI only last night!
Yeah, I didn't mention their ship being called the 'Elaine' because I couldn't find any evidence of them saying it and didn't know where to look. And I was really trying to avoid bringing my own theories into it, which I almost did several times, so I only put in stuff I knew for sure was mentioned in the games.
I'm also pretty sure I made no mention of Captain Marley being a governor... except possibly in the EMI description. And I wasn't trying to defend the plot-twist, I was agreeing it didn't make sense. I just wanted to point out that HT claiming to have washed up on Monkey Island was likely a mistaken late addition. It makes only slightly more sense if you disregard that bit.
I don't think it was mentioned yet but if you read the diary found in the desk on the Sea Monkey in the Captain's Quarters then it talks about "Herman Toothrot". In EFMI he claims to have forgotten his name and come up with "Herman Toothrot" based on the initials "H.T." If he came up with the name after he arrived (and became stranded) on Monkey Island, then how did it end up written all over the diary entries written en route???
Essentially what happened is that LA did what is to be expected of them: try turn a quick profit. They didn't care about things like continuity or the fans, it was about the money. Which is why it's actually great that TTG now have their hands on the games because although they are a business, they aren't so cold-hearted and corporate-minded (graveminded) as to totally ignore established canon and the voice of the fans in favor of a faster pay-off.

One could argue that he didnt "forget" the name, that it was there, he just couldn't directly access it. However, in remembering his name, he noticed the H.T. and Herman Toothrot would pop up, he just wouldn't know that was his name, simply thinking its a name he came up with originally
Just to say of course confusing but I don't mind that Herman Toothrot is Horatio Torquemeda Marley. In fact, I think it's a good thing. He's a funny character that now that Herman is Guybrush's grandfather in-law, means we might see him more often
Maybe Captain Marley is Elaine's dad, while Grandpa Marley is her grandfather? I need a chart to figure this out, but I'm sure there's a good explanation if one sorts every little bit of information.
Oh, and if I remember correctly Herman Toothrot doesn't say he was washed up on strait on Monkey Island. More likely he was washed on Mellee island with memory loss, got a new name and then traveled on the "Sea Monkey" to Monkey Island.
Oh god I hope not, Guybrush Threepwood and the Crystal Skull.
Cringeworthy.
That actually sounds good.
"A treaure deep in the jungles. Known only to the lost tribles but until now, a race by treasure hunters and pirates. THE CRYSTAL SKULL. It contains inside evil spirits inside which should never be released or will danger the world.
Well guess whojust found it ...... Guybrush Threepwood
Who's showing it to his crew as a trophy ..... Guybrush Threepwood
Who's drinking grog from it ...... Guybrush Threepwood
Who just dropped it ...... Guybrush Threepwood
Who forgot the Voodoo Lady's warning ...... Guybrush Threepwood
Who just doomed the whole Carriban and even the world ...... well who do you think?"
The only way for an even remotely plausible explanation on the all herman toothrot - grandpa marley thing, is that there actually was a guy named herman toothrot who sailed to monkey island, got stranded and died. Later on grandpa marley washed ashore and lost his memory, and due to the fact they both had the same initials, thought he was herman toothrot. The biggest hole in this explanation is toothrot's partner, who's dead body we find in MI1, and herman seems to have known him before he died.

But he might have imagined that he knew the guy... and the real Herman Toothrot is actually LeChuck. Though that wouldn't be very shocking, I suppose.

If I remember correctly, Elaine refers to Big Whoop as her grandfather's treasure, when she hears the explosion from Dinky Island. So, that would be Captain Marley, her grandfather.
I know the secret, after a stunning vision of the future!
There is no chapter 5. It's all a hoax. Telltale rickrolled you all by claiming this would be a five-chapter game. If there were a chapter five, it would be a complete "making of" chapter.
I can already hear Telltale rushing a real chapter 5 after this revelation!

If the whole EFMI thing was true, wouldn't Elaine see/recognize her grandpa in MI2 when she sees what Guybrush is doing at dinky island? He's sitting at the beach doing his zen thing. He's not hard to find. I know you could say they missed seeing each other, but Herman's always there mediating, except if you as him about the treasure and then you find it.
Also from what I remember EFMI just seems to ignore the fact that Herman got shipwrecked on Monkey Island cause the monkeys never got help when they took the Mad Monkey (or sea I forget)to Melee Island. What did Herman do? Get shipwrecked by LeChuck, lose his memory, get rescued, go hunting for Monkey Island with his friend, and then get stuck again? I know it's possible, but it's a stretch. In MI 1+2, Herman always came of as a little crazy (as I think of the time where you land on the beach with your head in the sand and your butt on fire and herman expects you to say something) but never senile.
Something we should consider..
MI is an old game series and "real" fans knew all about it...but: ToMI is also intended to get easy to understand for new players. So the thing to come can`t be nothing newer ones would be too tricky for them(because they haven`t played the older games). It MUST be something relevant in MI AND ToMI. I would puzzle out Big Whoop, Herman, the old crew, Stan, Murray and such a like. The characters newer players are used to AND are important in MI at all are Guybrush, Elaine and LeChuck..ok: Voodoo Lady! I would go with the theory that the Lady used GT in former games and LeChuck lost the battles! Now, LC controled VL to win over GT by sending foul messages. I would suppose VL created the amulet (when GT get control over her) and somehow LC misused her own spell to control her AND GT at last by misleading as GT trust her advise. He brings him down for trial (with help from DeSinge and Morgan) and executed. The way to Elaine is free then as (misleaded) GT made him human through the sponge. The monkeys, I think, are used for overwhelming the powers of the VL in some kind of way and gets LC in a position to Elaine showing her his caring for animals.
After that (GT out of way), LC uses the power of the Pox (destroying the sponge before) and gets immortal again for both of them (Elaine and LC) so they can live forever. So he intended to rise as a "Pirate God" and succeed in the end!
But: there is his "living" piece of GT (as mentioned before) to get Guybrush back to live and give the chance to cross LC`s plans again...
no no no!! I don't meant E5 an hoax!
What I say is only about E4...so, the last living thing of Guybrush is his hand after being executed! LeChuck has tricked the VoodooLady, Guybrush and Elaine to succeed! And he will (my opinion, here it "rocks") do in E4. So now, in E5 he needs to fulfil his plan and raise as a "Pirate god" (s.o.). But the hand of Guybrush left of living thing he haven`t thought of because of DeSinge making his own plans.
So: At the end of E4 we will see Guy executed, his hand left (in ownership of DeSinge) and start in E5 (as typical in all episodes..short but cool) WITh controlling the HAND escaping DeSinge (maybe with the help of the monkey..name is lost sorry), get reanimated, bring down LeChuck with the help of Morgan and free Elaine from the grip of LC.
Excuse my bad English...I was not intended to confuse you!
Guybrush's Hand running around like THING from the Adams family? Now that's a theory I hadn't thought of. That could be interesting, and it would make Guybrush "Undead" for sure.
No ... the real truth is Gilbert never had any plans for the third game, he was winging it all along! Dun dun duuuuuun! Or there's an earthquake. How's that for "shaking Monkey Island to its very core?"

Hmmm... maybe everything took place inside a snow globe, and the real Monkey Island is altogether completely different, with monkeys in robot suits with laser guns.

Guybrush goes back in time but loses his memory
For some reason he takes on the name lechuck and meets elaine and falls in love with her, who sends him on the quest to find the secret of monkey island. There he's transformed into the ghost pirate lechuck.
Wait, I know! It turns out that they were never in the Caribbean to begin with, but have actually been in the South Seas the entire time! Think of the ramifications!
As for the topic, sounds too much after some in the end not so shocking thing and marketing fuzz unless Gilbert reveals the Secret of Monkey Island in this one.
"Guybrush, I find you guilty of selling fine leather jackets at stupidly low prices. I hereby sentence you to work in the PR department of Telltale Games for the rest of your life. *evil cackle*"

It would have to be the Southern tropics, for all the Caribbeany islands we've visited.

You should! Use one of your treasure hunting coupons

Or maybe Lechuck will finish his evil plan with someone we all know...
in space!
Sounds like a rip off of 'Escape from Space Monkey Island!'
Wait, how would that work as the second to last episode?
Monkey Island 2 did it and got 3 sequals
For some reason he takes on the name lechuck and meets elaine and falls in love with her, who sends him on the quest to find the secret of monkey island. There he's transformed into the ghost pirate lechuck.
The end.
Welcome to the combination of Photoshop and the internet. The possibilities are (unfortunately) infinite
Monkey Island "5"
or......
"Star Wars XIV: The Beating of the Dead Horse Continues"
Nah, It's "Indiana Jones and some boring adventure, again" and/or "Indiana Jones and some boring adventure, again - LEGO(tm) Edition"
