Notice how the posts in the foreground in the concept art are a lot more detailed and 'Special Edition-looking' than those actually in the Special Edition.
I still prefer how the original game looks dirtier. And I don't think that's just because of the pixels, but because of the colors and the way the light from the candles are such a contrast to the darkness elsewhere. The new version looks too bright and clean. It could've used a little more contrast in the colors.
But of course, nothing will ever live up to the original. Because the original is still the original. Just like how any coversong where the original is by The Beatles will never be as good as the original.
They based it off the game and not the concept art, I think.
Plus, it could be distracting when you're playing the game to have such a strong foreground. I think it's fine the way it is.
The originals weren't all that special, honestly. They just made for a good idea of what it would look like in the actual game, and the SE just stylized/cleaned what ended up being in the game. Sure, you may not like the stylization, but that doesn't necessarily means it's bad. I think these backgrounds are a vast improvement on the backdrops of the first game, which weren't that bad in the first place.
That Wally background is awesome! LucasArts really seem to be advertising this game to be awesome. Gameplay videos would be appreciated too soon. If the backdrops, characters, music, tone, voices and features of the game all work out well, it'll be absolute heaven to play! Speaking of voices, I wonder if Neil Ross is still voicing Wally. Hmm. I really liked him as Wally, and as I understand, Neil has done some voices for LucasArts since CMI, not to mention he has a very impressive resume: http://www.neilross.com/, I'd love him to return.
Really curious about the cast for this game, there've been no confirmations of anybody voicing a character in the game (except for Alexandra Boyd who said that 'another monkey island's in the can!', so I assume she meant MI2...) The LeChuck laugh on the site sortof sounds like Earl Boen (which is frawsome), but there's no confirmation on Dom being back at all. I'd be VERY surprised if they didn't use him, but usually we'd hear about the voice cast by now, yes?
Actually Peter Chan was the background artist and not Purcell like the numerous people that posted above stated.... I think they did a good job with Wally's so far I am really pleased with what I am seeing.

From what I understand, they both did backgrounds, though Purcell did the "original" wally's house painting posted above.

It was both of them. Purcell, for example, did the Voodoo Lady's hut. You can see very small, subtle stylistic differences. Doesn't matter, anyways, as those two are incredible. Seriously. Chan could cement his reputation as a legend based on Grim Fandango alone.
It's weird how distinguised everyone who worked on the LucasArts games was and is. They had a deep understanding of their respective crafts that very few teams seem to have. (Telltale are awesome too, and have the potential to outdo LucasArts; they just need to work a little on their puzzle structure, for now.)
Both Purcell and Chan did the backgrounds. A little snippet from THIS interview with Steve Purcell:
How was it to work at LucasArts, and especially on a game like Monkey Island 2?
I worked on both Monkey 1 and 2. On the first one we only had sixteen colors we could use so nighttime and the color black became our friends. Black looked the same on everyone's monitor so we ended up building a lot of our backgrounds onto black. By the time we were working on Monkey 2 the idea of scanning painted backgrounds was available to us. Peter Chan was handy with the markers and he could do backgrounds super fast. I did some marker work and painted some as well or mixed the two. We had more disk space to do elaborate animations. I spent weeks laboring over the animation frames of a corpse reassembling in a coffin.
Haha, cool, but I still think the original is the best. Either way, you know what I meant.
Well yeah, I got the sentiment, but I respectfully disagree. You should give all art a chance; saying that something can't work just by principal without actually watching/listening to/playing/whatevering it is wrong, in my opinion.

I never said any of those things. I'm very open to new stuff. And yes, the original is the best always, imo, because it takes more to actually create it from nothing, than to polish someone else's work. That's what I meant, a copy can never live up to the original, because it's missing so many factors that the original had.
This week our community got their first tastes of Monkey Island 2’s Special Edition. Featuring locales from Scabb Island, we really wanted to begin giving fans a taste of how much time we were putting in to each backgrounds. Using the original art both in execution as well as inspiration, these scenes have amazing levels of details in them – and quite a few secrets for those die-hard enough to notice. Like Wally’s new maps.
But the world itself is the real story here. Woodtick, a seaside port on Scabb Island has been taken over the evil and diminutive Largo LaGrande. Luckily, our hero has allies to help him in his time of need. While Scabb has many sights to see, my memories of the island always take me right back to the first time I crossed that bridge with piles of coins and gold in my pockets. For those who missed out on all the nostalgia and want to join in, hit the jump to see Scabb Island in its high-res glory.
Next week we’ll be doing updates of Phatt Island, and if you’re nice about it we will be showing you a full set of concept art and telling you about the process all these backgrounds went through. If you’re nice, that is. Want to see the screens first? Hit up our Facebook and Twitter feeds and join up for the latest news.

(Original SE)
(More contrast, sharpness and grain)
I also found a website with the game's official title screen on it:

Still, I'm happy with how this is turning out. If I end up disliking it, the original version is just a click away
I disagree:

I think it was Purcell and Peter Chan.
