Hey Coolsome, I'm pretty sure I'm the only one here who cares about Samurai besides you, and I've seen most of it. Yeah, Dekker and Dayu's story is sad. Fun bit, Dekker is the Wild Force red ranger.

You know I was talking to people at work, (kind of have to when you work at checkouts), and this women says she's getting some stuff ready for her kid's 18th party.
So I was saying how tough that can be if they have loads of friends (thinking back to my older brother's 18th).
Then she says he doesn't have loads of friends.
I say, oh well, thats not so bad, me and my friends celebrated with a sleepover and had some party food, a few drinks, maybe a take away if party food is a bit basic.

She says that what he does, and that he's a nerdy guy. Wants to be a game designer and is doing a course in college in 3d modelling after dropping out of school.

She wasn't so enthusiastic about his chances though. Says he is good at art and design, but no sense of business or maths or english ect.

I'd argue personally that he is in a better position.
I mean, I know a lot about the industry. I know where the market is hot, and what games are popular ect.
But I don't really have any particularily good skills under my hat.
Not a natural artist, musician, coder ect.
Just ideas and some business knowledge really.

At least if game design fell through for that guy, (probably wouldn't come to that though, since he'd have a skillset that make it easier to get into the industry) he could get good work with digital art.

Me... Ummm... I got a job at Tesco on checkouts... -_-

Could work on that idea tomorrow some more. Still need to finish the first room!
(Though its kind of hard because I need to think up some more mechanics first. I want that starting room to be a HQ of sorts. So I need to design some areas that function as tools to assist the player in the game (for instance a machine that tells the player where they need to go, and a bit of a brief (don't want to clue too much, since I want the player to figure some stuff out for himself)), might move onto something else though if I can't figure it all out in one go)

My eventual aim, is to try to map out (on graph paper), the entire map of the game (or at least a first draft of it).
Then I can move things, tweak things, add things afterwards.

Need to come up with some story as well.

So far I have the main character, (name undecided), who is a fairly distant descendant of a legendary hero who was rumoured to draw his power from a holy deity, (so the family and some older locals know the legend, but many people don't really care to remember it. Maybe the legend is a couple of hundred years old or something), that has to take on the mantel in the modern world.

Essentially he becomes the Herald/Vessel/Representative (can't think of the right word at the moment but you get the idea), of Cupid.

Cupid is VERY reluctant to get the guy involved, (since he and the hero's ancestor didn't get along very well, which will be explained over time), but he's struggling to maintain balance on his own (there are dark forces on the uprise that he needs to help the other deities out with in the spiritual relm, so needs someone to do some of his work in the physical world) so he has to call the rather reluctant and confused protagonist into active duty.

The hero has two main duties to take care of:

    - To find people who are "meant for each other", destined couplings, and get them together (or in some cases, get them to remain together...)

    - To find and defeat demons that feed of negative energies. (Co-incidentally many of these will be tied into the first duty as well)

Powers-wise our hero becomes equiped with a variety of abilities to help him with his duties.

He has the ability to supernaturally persuade, control, and influence people.
(Anything from "slight of hand" to full on possession. Though the more the player does, the more likely they get caught, so they can't abuse their powers. They need to think smartly)

But thats not to say he's a wimp.
Well, he is a bit weedy, but with Cupid's powers he can form "Soul Arrows" that can be charged with Emotion Energy collected/generated to fight off the forces of darkness.
(And be warned, these things are pissed that you are taking away their sources of food!! XD)

So I want the game to be a bit cartoony/anime -like.
Hero is probably going to be fairly generic, but like many good games/shows the side characters are likely going to be the most interesting.

Cupid alone is going to be interesting. He's a bit surly and mean-spirited, (he deliberately uses his powers at the start on the hero to make him a temporary babe magnet (to prove how powerful he is), but then darkly mentions how doing that killed 3 people (demons got them while he dropped his guard), to prove how serious the situation is), but eventually he warms up to the hero a bit (he communicates with him at some point in every "scenario", and these conversations become a bit more warmer over time (he forgets he is using telepathy sometimes and lets slip a few guarded thoughts, which provide some of the humour in these chats)
Design-wise, I'll probably make him look like a baby, but with those sharp triangle sunglasses, and maybe a cigar or a dummy.

So I kinda want it to be a little bit of a buddy-cop thing going on with those two, as they act and re-act to a world increasingly going mad.
(The scenarios get increasingly tougher and more absurd)

I reckon I might be onto a very interesting game here, which is why I'm trying really hard not to give up on it or get distracted.
I HAVE to get that physical framework there (the level designs and gameplay mechanics), in some form or another, then I can worry about the details later.

(And boy will I need to. Research and practice on 8-bit spriting is going to be tough. (Not so much the overworld stuff. I know I can do that, but I need those full-body sort of stuff (think like cutscenes for NES games like Ninja Gaiden ect.) for the visual novel-style sequences.)

EDIT: Sorry about yet another wall 'o text, but I was on a stream of thought I didn't want to stop (at least until I was done! XD).

And yes... that is what my mind is like, All. The. Time!!

A golf/polo shirt and slacks or cargo pants. MAYBE button-up shirts. Now he's all button-up shirts and ties and it's just weird and not right. Next thing you know they'll put in those godawful stained-glass windows and projection screens and those garish gold or electric glowing crosses.

At my old church, this was the kind of dress that people were expected to wear. Women had a little more leeway, (with the general rule being women need to wear modest skirt and top/dress) but men who didn't follow this standard typically would be quietly looked down upon. That said, leaders didn't wear anything more special. Everyone typically looked the same.

Really, it was a matter of wanting to look nicest yet modest to God in the minds of the folks. If society had more variation of what was acceptable for men to wear formally, I'm sure it'd reflect in the church's culture as well.
  • edited May 2012
I always find it funny how the teachings of the bible, (particularily the new testament), go on about how bad it is to be obsessed with appearance, and how appearances can be deceptive, yet many Christian organisations tend to obsess over appearance and image.

Its almost as if they never read the bible at all! XD

In fact, while I'm at it, anyone ever think God is kind of a needy SOB? XD

Think about it, he wants people to think about him and talk to him ALL THE TIME.
Methinks he might have some issues he needs to sort out.

(I mean one time when people were ignoring him, he decided to straight up flood the whole damn planet. Loving and benevolent he definately wasn't then...)

EDIT: (Don't go reading too much into this, I'm just foolin' around. I don't want to start up an argument over the nature of the Christian deities! (They never tend to end well... :X))

You know, I never talk about religion, but this is a big pet peeve for me. My parents raised me under the idea that God sees people as naked as the dogs we own. So I have grown up under the personal idea that caring a huge deal about what clothes you're wearing, especially in a church environment, is the STUPIDEST THING EVER.

*shrug* It's not my job to tell others what's acceptable in dress when it comes to what they believe. The bible can be interpreted in so many different ways, it's really no surprise that there's infinite positions on the matter.

Whoa, where was all this conversational material when I was bored in the office??
Apparently the pastor at my grandmother's church has started wearing a tie to sermons.

...that just feels overly fancy and wrong.

I can't remember exactly what I used to wear to Sunday school, but I'm pretty sure it was what I usually wore back then - my older brother's hand-me-downs, which in turn had been handed down from his bigger best friend. I remember once my mum tried to make me wear a nice pink dress to go there... goodness did I crack the shits.
Talking about fancy, my brother and I are taking our father (and our mother, as well as a couple of friends) to the races at York tomorrow for his birthday, and we have to dress appropriately which is at least a shirt, tie & jacket. Hahaha. The dress code for Royal Ascot now specifies: "'Knickers: A definite yes - but not on show, please, ladies!" Not even kidding.

Next thing you know they'll put in those godawful stained-glass windows

Aw, stained-glass windows are one of the best things about churches. The really intricate ones especially are nice to look at when you zone out.

I rather like being looked down upon by such people. It means I'm not some mindless uninteresting sheep.

But look how the men/women express their individuality by wearing different coloured ties/shirts! :p
