"WalkingDead101.exe has stopped working" error

Hi,

We are currently investigating what is causing this to happen for a small percentage of the userbase for The Walking Dead, and we apologize for the inconvenience. There's a few fixes outlined in the technical support FAQ here: http://www.telltalegames.com/forums/showthread.php?t=29368

If those fixes aren't working for you, please reply to this thread and let me know me know what kind of hardware or software security your system is using. I need the following information:

1: Are you using a software firewall? If so, have you allowed access to the game?

2: Do you have anti-virus software? If so, who makes it? Is it up to date? Is it blocking access to our game?

3: Does the game work if you run it while disconnected from the Internet?

I don't need DXDiag information or any other system specific info apart from the information requested above. Please, no discussion of the issue in this thread. It's to gather information only.

Thanks,
Mike

    Hey Mike-

    Here's my info:

1: Are you using a software firewall? If so, have you allowed access to the game?

Yes, but I turned it off for the game along with all other listed suggestions simultaneously, and it still doesn't work.

2: Do you have anti-virus software? If so, who makes it? Is it up to date? Is it blocking access to our game?

I'm using Lavasoft's Ad-Aware/Ad-watch Live SW. It is up to date, but I also disabled/exited it before running the program.

3: Does the game work if you run it while disconnected from the Internet?

It does not, even in combination with all other listed suggestions.

Thanks for helping to get to the bottom of this, Mike! We all appreciate it!!! :-)

    @Im_The_Foreman
That's for the Steam version only though, right? Has anyone "fixed" the standalone version using the "disconnect internet" method?

It's getting a bit ridiculous that we've not had any word or support on this from Telltale. I'm getting rather worried, to be honest. Not very professional or good customer relations at all.

1.) Windows firewall turned off. No other firewall installed.
2.) No antivirus running in background, I perform Malware Bytes scans when needed.
3.) Internet off or on doesn't matter, it just crashes instantly.

I have tried every method available that I have found using Google over the past couple weeks and to no avail. I assumed at first it was because I was using windows 8 consumer preview but this seems to be an issue that is affecting all windows OS'es and not just mine.

I don't get any visible error messages, I can see in my Processes list the "WalkingDead101.exe*32" appears briefly and then disappears right away.

In case it's the same issue, here are my responses to the questions

1: Are you using a software firewall? If so, have you allowed access to the game?

Using Norton Internet Security, and Steam has full access.

2: Do you have anti-virus software? If so, who makes it? Is it up to date? Is it blocking access to our game?

Same as above, its up to date, and not blocking. I even turned off all of the firewall and A/V settings and still no luck.

3: Does the game work if you run it while disconnected from the Internet?
    Doesn't work in any situation.

I plays the walking dead for like 9 hours before stopping. I waited for word on this next EP and just the other day tried lunching the game to only get this error. Nothing on my computer has changed all drivers up to date and trying everything you listed did nothing. But now I don't even get the error the game wont lunch at all just runs in the back ground doing nothing. I think its EP2 update that broke my game hell if I know. All I just know it worked fine till this new EP come along.

    P.S I use Norton

Managed to get WD2 started by running steam as admin then running WalkingDead101.exe as admin (trying to start from within steam doesn't work).

However, it's not seeing any of my ep1 saved games, just shows list of 3 New Game Slots. I know it's using the save game dir cos when I update the preferences the time stamp on prefs.prop changes. Trying to play ep1 just starts a new game and creates a new save overwriting the ones that are there.

Episode status just shows ep2 installed, nothing against ep1.

I guess this means my choices from ep1 aren't being carried over which is a bit crappy :(
  • edited June 2012
I found that doing this for some reason helps.
right-click the game's executable, click Properties, click the Compatibility tab, and then check the options to run in compatibility mode for Windows 98/ME. Also check the option to disable desktop composition.
mine was set on (windows XP SP3) Seems Windows 7 works if you don't like the idea of running it on Windows 98/me.
Find it in the steam forums about walking dead.

P.S you still may have to run it as administrator

Edit: Now that I've finished ep1 like I did week before it sent me back to the starting streen. Ones I hit (click to continue) it started connecting and it never finished loading. Left it to load for over a hour and it didn't get to the menu for me to play ep2. I really think this games core system is messed up or the new ep is breaking something some how. I wiped my saved game and it loaded up the menu in a second after hitting continue. So something is up with the game saving or keeping track of the choice we make. : / take's the point out of the game when I can't even keep my choices from ep1 to carry over into ep2.

2: Do you have anti-virus software? If so, who makes it? Is it up to date? Is it blocking access to our game?

-yes. AVG. up to date. it is not blocking.

3: Does the game work if you run it while disconnected from the Internet?

-no. got the same error message.

this error seemed to have popped up after the patch for episode 2.

    2- No

    3- No

Game worked fine when I played Episode 1 when it came out.
I could log fine yesterday, manage to get tot he episode selection to download episode 2.
Game froze at this point and since then I never get passed the "Click to Continue" stage.

1 Yes, but have enabled access
2 Yes, MSE. Have ensured that its not blocking access.
    3 No

Everything was fine for Ep 1, the game ran perfectly. Downloaded Ep 2 before I went to bed last night, so I could play today. but now game says Connecting, then once this disappears, the game crashes. I've been trying to access the game all day.

I'm on XP and using Telltale exe, not Steam. I'm based in England, just in case that makes any difference.

    1. Temporarily disabled. No change (did not work while disabled).
    2. Norton 360 temporarily disabled. No change.
    3. No

Occasionally, I can get direct game launch of WalkingDead101.exe to work by right-clicking executable and running as Administrator; other times, I encounter fatal Steam error "Failed to load platform modules". When game does launch, it has lost all state information (I must re-enter display resolution and full screen settings every time a successful launch occurs).

Running Windows 7 Pro 64-bit OS, 6-core W3680 Xeon CPU @ 3.33 GHz, 8 GB RAM, Sapphire HD6970 GPU, SSD disk drives.

Update: resolved problem by changing WalkingDead101.exe properties, selecting "Run this program as an administrator" under Compatibility tab - with no other Compatibility modes selected. Then, launched game through normal Steam launch process.
