Thanks for this thread! I just bought the game (standalone version from the Telltale store) and this error greeted me.
Went through all the suggestions in the FAQ and nothing worked.
However, disconnecting the internet after login did...yay
1: Are you using a software firewall? If so, have you allowed access to the game?
no
2: Do you have anti-virus software? If so, who makes it? Is it up to date? Is it blocking access to our game?
yes, avast, it's up to date, I don't know
3: Does the game work if you run it while disconnected from the Internet?
yes it does
So I bought this last night because of Steam's summer sale. I haven't been able to load the game once, just this same error over and over. I don't have a firewall, AV or anything blocking me from using the game. I've done all the steps with permission, etc. and nothing is letting me load the game. So basically 20 bucks for a broken game. I see that they mod hasn't responded to any of the people asking when a fix would be, and some are from months ago.
I just TWD from Steam on the summer sale and sadly, when I tried to open it, "WalkingDead101.exe has stopped working" slapped me in the face. After trying all the fixes I could find in the forums, nothing was working.
Go to your common game folder (i.e. C:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\common)
You should see all of your games listed there in the form of folders. Find The Walking Dead.
(this may vary depending on your OS, I'm using Win7 64bit)
Right Click on it and go to properties.
Click on the Security tab
Click the "Edit" button (under Group or user names)
Click the "Add" button
In the "Enter the object names to select" box, type "everyone"
click the "OK" button
Click the OK button again
Click the OK button one more time
Now, open the walking dead folder.
Right click the "WalkingDead101.exe"
select "Run as administrator"
It still doesn't open for me from steam, but at least I can play it. Hopefully you will have some luck with it as well.
*EDIT*
For ease of use, do the following:
Navigate to your walkingdead101.exe
Right click it and select properties
Select the "Compatibility" tab
Under Privilege level, check off "Run this program as an administrator"
Click "OK"
I bought walking dead on steam. Episode 1 is not on the menu.
Episode 2 is and runs fine. When I do all that steam tells me to do and also in the above poststo get episode 1 running all I get running is episode 2.
If I right click the walkingdead101.exe and run as admin. it start episode 2.
The walking dead file from steam that I downloaded is 1.5 gigs. Is that the right size?
Also as many said I have tried everything also spent well over 6 hours today alone version I have is steam and game loaded once yesterday when I bought it. now when I load I get the exe error done all problem solving on forums think I will be asking for refund and the problem being just 1% is rubbish there is stuff on forums and all diffent people on the net with the issue can't believe that after weeks people have the problem still I am just one day and really wanting a refund and won't be buying another game from you guys for the lack of info even on your main page!
We are currently investigating what is causing this to happen for a small percentage of the userbase for The Walking Dead, and we apologize for the inconvenience. There's a few fixes outlined in the technical support FAQ here: http://www.telltalegames.com/forums/showthread.php?t=29368
If those fixes aren't working for you, please reply to this thread and let me know me know what kind of hardware or software security your system is using. I need the following information:
1: Are you using a software firewall? If so, have you allowed access to the game?
2: Do you have anti-virus software? If so, who makes it? Is it up to date? Is it blocking access to our game?
3: Does the game work if you run it while disconnected from the Internet?
I don't need DXDiag information or any other system specific info apart from the information requested above. Please, no discussion of the issue in this thread. It's to gather information only.
Thanks,
Mike
1) No I don't have a firewall set up
2) AVG Anti Virus (temporarily disabled to play game)
3) No game does not work when disconnected from the internet, nor does it run when I am connected to the internet.
The first time I decide to buy a telltale games product from steam, normally i get it straight from telltales website and I'm having a horrible experience.
I haven't played it at all
I am running a 3.2 ghz quadcore intel with a gtx 285 with updated drivers and i followed all the troubleshooting steps to update direct x and so forth and so forth. also tried to run as administrator. nothing works
Here is my crash report. need any more info?

No anti-virus or firewall, and disconnecting the internet doesn't make the game launch, but I no longer get anything after the steam launcher. No error message or anything.
Game worked perfectly before Episode 2 came out. Finally having free time, I decided today to play Episode 2, and constantly had this issue. I got it to start twice, but each time after I exited to get my controller recognized (forgot to turn it on before hand) the problem returned. The first time I told it to run as admin, but after the first launch, it just went right back to the error even with all of the A suggestions. The next time was after a full steam restart and DirectX reinstall. Again, after that it didn't run.
Hi, i have the same error "WalkingDead101.exe has stopped workin" after launching the game .
I try everything : verifying cache, re-install, Run As Adminstrator, shutdown firewall & antivirus, compatibility mode for Windows 98/ME, contact steam support, re-install all need software, looking solutions on forums - AND NOTHING CHANGES !!! The game shows me the same error all the time !!!
So i have 2 questions :
1) Why the pirate version working without problems ??? but license no !!!
2) How can i get my money back (nevermind can i get it back or not , but i really don't wanna buy any games from TellTale Games anymore !!!) ???
1: Are you using a software firewall? If so, have you allowed access to the game?
no
2: Do you have anti-virus software? If so, who makes it? Is it up to date? Is it blocking access to our game?
Anti-virus: NOD32, I have tried disabling it and it still doesn't work.
3: Does the game work if you run it while disconnected from the Internet?
no, in fact i just bricked my router from disconnecting the power to it to try this!!
My machine: Core 2 6600@2.4Ghz, Nvidia 285GTX, Windows 7, 4gb of Ram
1: Are you using a software firewall? If so, have you allowed access to the game?
Use Win7 built in firewall, shows as ticked for Home/Work Privat and unticked for Public
2: Do you have anti-virus software? If so, who makes it? Is it up to date? Is it blocking access to our game?
Use MS Essentials, up to date and not blocking
3: Does the game work if you run it while disconnected from the Internet?
Runs but still fails to load last saved game on Episode 2 and thinks it is a fresh install
By disabling desktop compatibility and running the .exe as administrator, I'm able to run the game. However, I can not play in full screen.
Just if your wondering...
1: Are you using a software firewall? If so, have you allowed access to the game? No firewall
2: Do you have anti-virus software? If so, who makes it? Is it up to date? Is it blocking access to our game? Yes, AVG free. It's not blocking access. It's up to date.
3: Does the game work if you run it while disconnected from the Internet?
No
1: Are you using a software firewall? If so, have you allowed access to the game?
It worked maybe two weeks under my current settings. And no, I don't have a firewall on.
2: Do you have anti-virus software? If so, who makes it? Is it up to date? Is it blocking access to our game?
Yes, Kaspersky, and I turned it off in hopes that would get it working but nope, still crashes.
3: Does the game work if you run it while disconnected from the Internet?
Tried that, and no, still get the error message.
1: Are you using a software firewall? If so, have you allowed access to the game?
Yes, Access is allowed, doesn't work even if firewall is turned off
2: Do you have anti-virus software? If so, who makes it? Is it up to date? Is it blocking access to our game? Yes, Panda Cloud. It's not blocking access. It's up to date. Still doesn't work if I shut it off.
3: Does the game work if you run it while disconnected from the Internet?
Yes, but I cant activate internet afterwards unless i restart my computer
Using Steam Version 1: Are you using a software firewall? If so, have you allowed access to the game? Yes, using firewall, but Game has access
2: Do you have anti-virus software? If so, who makes it? Is it up to date? Is it blocking access to our game? Yes, AVG free. It's not blocking access. It's up to date.
Turned if off and still had the same problem 3: Does the game work if you run it while disconnected from the Internet?
No, tried to play in offline mode and still does not work.
3: Does the game work if you run it while disconnected from the Internet?
I did not try out, as I need Steam to run it.
Additional information:
I recognized that The Walking Dead works if I run Steam as an Administrator.
But even this is not a solution, because very often the whole game will be reset, i.e.:
* the game starts in windowed mode, 1024x768
* all save games are lost (!), which is very annoying
I managed to get it running by setting set as administrator and compability on windows 98/me, but then all my save files are lost and all ingame settings were lost to. And the game won't run on fullscreen for me to, but i managed to get it to full screen. All you need to do is to click on the middle of the game in the middle of the window and press buttons "alt" and "enter" in the same time, the window will get bigger and klick on the middle again and press "alt" and "enter" again. Then it should be fullscreen, you might need to repeat this like 2-3 times or even more......but it will get full screen eventually.
I am so dissapointed what TellTale did to us loyal customers, why are they doing this to us? Just to make the fucking game to work is like a survival horror, hahahaha.
Telltale make a fucking patch asap, or you will go to history as the biggest scandal in gaming history.
1: Are you using a software firewall? If so, have you allowed access to the game?
No don't use
2: Do you have anti-virus software? If so, who makes it? Is it up to date? Is it blocking access to our game?
Yes i Use AL-YAC
I've tried to not use it but still doesn't work.
3: Does the game work if you run it while disconnected from the Internet?
Just started to have this problem since the achievements for Chap 3 showed up on Steam...
I'm connecting with the exact same hardware/software configuration as about 12 of my co-workers, all on the same network and I'm the only one (so far) who can't connect.

My Walking Dead won´t start after steam update too
im using win7 64Bit and have tried out the most of them what was wrote down on page 1 in here.
The only way to get my game back startet was to set the compatibility mode for WalkingDead101.exe to windowsxp service pack2 but if i use this settings the game starts
1. in a Window (ok, can be set to normal fullscreen and resolution via game settings menu)
2. overwrites my prefs.prop file in my documents floder at first startup so that the game can not use my old savegames if i overwrite the prefs.prop with my backup from last month it will be overwritten by the game at next startup again. Have tried to replace a new savegame created today with a renamed old savegame but thats dosn´t works too.
3. so i have to play the game from the beginning to restore my storyline in the game or to wait until the file is fixed for win7 64bit so that i can start the game without any compatibility mode.
So i actually have restored my backupfiles from the walking dead save floder and
wait with a cup of tea
I got the same problem after ep3 and this is how I resolved it. I'm using steam in win7/64. I hope this works for you too.
1. Copy your savefiles the whole Telltale Games folder to desktop.
2. Uninstall the game.
3. Run RegClean or something like that program and delete all Telltale games reg files or Walking dead files.
4. Find every Talltale games folder and delete them from my documents (I did find 2 actully from different places) Using Search will help you. But do not delete copyed folder from desktop.
5. Install the game.
6. If game wont start run it as win98 / ME compatibility mode.
7. Start the game and shut it.
8. Now there should be Telltale Games folder at my documents. Copy your backup folder from desktop to documents folder and over write it if possible.
9. Start the game again. Press paly and if you dont have your save files there (i didnt) shut the game.
10. Now go documents folder and now there should be 2 Telltale games folders. In one Telltale games folder there should be your savefiles under "The Walking Dead" folder and another Telltale games folder should have "the walking dead" folder what game greated after last startup.
11. Copy all files from "The Walking Dead" folder to "the walking dead" folder and delete old Telltale Games folder where is The Walking Dead folder completly.
12. Start the game. Now your resolution, settings and savegames should be there and working correctly.
1: Are you using a software firewall? If so, have you allowed access to the game? Just windows firewall on 7 but I turned it off and still get the issue.
2: Do you have anti-virus software? If so, who makes it? Is it up to date? Is it blocking access to our game? Microsoft Essentials but turned off
3: Does the game work if you run it while disconnected from the Internet? No
The windows 98 compatibility thing fixed it but its still annoying that it didn't work as soon as I downloaded it on my win7 64 bit
1: Are you using a software firewall? If so, have you allowed access to the game? Yes, yes, does not matter if I have it on or off.
2: Do you have anti-virus software? If so, who makes it? Is it up to date? Is it blocking access to our game? Yes, AVG. Yes, No, Turned off or on does not help.
3: Does the game work if you run it while disconnected from the Internet?
No. Game does not work, connected or not connected.
I have tryed to change the game to run in Windows 98/ME it does run but soon as I try to load my save, it just goes to a black screen, I can not do anything other than alt to my desktop and end the task, that says its "working".
WARNING: DO NOT PLAY IN WINDOWS 7 COMPABILITY MODE, THE GAME CHANGES YOUR CHOICES AND FORCES DECISIONS YOU NEVER WANTED ----> READ THIS POST I POSTED, THIS COULD HAPPEN TO YOU: http://www.telltalegames.com/forums/showthread.php?t=32917
1: Are you using a software firewall? If so, have you allowed access to the game? yes, i've allowed access to the game
2: Do you have anti-virus software? If so, who makes it? Is it up to date? Is it blocking access to our game? yes,its AVG and its up to date. i dont believe its blocking access to the game
3: Does the game work if you run it while disconnected from the Internet? sometimes, it goes on and off repeatedly
the game only runs if i run it in winxp mode but then it wont recognize the saves.... Are the people at telltale even doing anything about this, this has been going on for days and so many people have problems
1: Are you using a software firewall? If so, have you allowed access to the game?
No, I've deactivated my firewall.
2: Do you have anti-virus software? If so, who makes it? Is it up to date? Is it blocking access to our game?
Yes, I'm using an uptodate Version of Antivir.
3: Does the game work if you run it while disconnected from the Internet?
No, unfortunately this didn't help.
I tried every step from the forum link and it's still not working. Also, I played the first two episodes without issue.
1. Firewall yes, exception yes. I've tried it with the firewall off, same problem
2. Antivirus yes, AVG free, yes it's updated and no it's not blocking
3. I've disconnected the internet before I launched steam, still didn't work and I've disconnected after I launched steam but before launching the game, same thing

Go to your common game folder (i.e. C:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\common)
You should see all of your games listed there in the form of folders. Find The Walking Dead.
(this may vary depending on your OS, I'm using Win7 64bit)

Click the "Edit" button (under Group or user names)
Click the "Add" button
In the "Enter the object names to select" box, type "everyone"
click the "OK" button
Click the OK button again
Click the OK button one more time
Now, open the walking dead folder.
Right click the "WalkingDead101.exe"
select "Run as administrator"
It still doesn't open for me from steam, but at least I can play it. Hopefully you will have some luck with it as well.

For ease of use, do the following:
Navigate to your walkingdead101.exe
Right click it and select properties
Select the "Compatibility" tab

3. so i have to play the game from the beginning to restore my storyline in the game or to wait until the file is fixed for win7 64bit so that i can start the game without any compatibility mode.
This is how I get my game working.
