Yes, Microsoft Security Essentials. It's not blocking the game as far as I can tell, but I also tried adding the Walking Dead Steam folder to exceptions, to no avail.

Has this really been going on for a week or two now?
How about you get a patch out ASAP or issue some refunds for your hastily made game.

Hello Mike as i see on the forum support.I just bought a game (the walking dead) Because i checked it out on youtube.and i like the story line.its interesting for me and i love zombie survival games. however after purchase of the item, i tried to download the game. it turns out that i can download the game if the site would let me. after clicking download button, the site is then processing, and at the bottom corner of the site, it shows, waiting for tell tale games. im not sure what the required system is required or if i have to download any other softwares before i can download this game, but the site just says, waiting for tell tale games. ill let the site run over night to see if i just have slow connection but based on that running that and me posting this thread before the site finishes processing the request, i dont think it has to do with my connection. i hope that i can enjoy this game as many others have, thank you.

oh and a suggestion. if there is a problem with a game, you should make it unavailable for the time being until you are able to fix it to prevent people from buying the game, and then unable to download the game. sometimes as humans we forget, and we might forget that we had bought this game in the first place and maybe wont be back to try and download the game. it prevents some from buying the game and wasting money forgetting about the game.im a busy guy so i just hope i dont forget about the game. i really would love to enjoy this game (wakling Dead) with lee and clemetine.

    Hi,
i bought this game since pre-order of Steam, and i´played the chapters 1 & 2 without any problems. But, when i want to play the 3 chap. i have the walkingdead101.exe problem.

    In answer to your question:
    1) i use a firewall, but that´s not the issue (i deactived it just in case, but nothing)
    2) my antivirus Avast! its not blocking the game
    3) the game doesnt work by any way: not desconecting internet, not whit compatibility, not executing as an administrator, not out from Steam.

I hope you can helpme soon!

    3. The game runs but the issue occurs seemingly randomly, every 2 or 3 boots. It causes ALL save data and all preferences to get lost in the process. It happens on BOTH machines i have the game installed on.

Yes, basic Windows Firewall, but The Walking Dead is listed as an exception.

2: Do you have anti-virus software? If so, who makes it? Is it up to date? Is it blocking access to our game?
Yes, but it is fully disabled.

3: Does the game work if you run it while disconnected from the Internet?
    No.

Game worked perfectly fine before Steam prompted me to "Convert it to a more efficient format."

    ^ This

Game was running fine until the steam conversion and all of a sudden I lost access to save files and the game only launches (in window mode) if I remove my xbox 360 controller first. It also doesn't allow me to use it again once its plugged back in.

Yes, windows basic firewall. I put it as an exception and disabled it
2: Do you have anti-virus software? If so, who makes it? Is it up to date? Is it blocking access to our game?
Advast free, it's up to date, the game is allowed and I disabled it
3: Does the game work if you run it while disconnected from the Internet?
    no

The game starts fine but in windowed mode. When I try to make it full screen, the game crashes. I've also lost all my saves. All this happened after the conversion to a "more efficient format"

Are we ever going to get an update on this? I can't play at all, ever since the conversion, and nobody has attempted to help me.

The game runs fine now. It happened once when attempting to load episode 3 and caused the whole saves can't be found issue that plagues the tech support forum.

    Hi,

We are currently investigating what is causing this to happen for a small percentage of the userbase for The Walking Dead, and we apologize for the inconvenience. There's a few fixes outlined in the technical support FAQ here: http://www.telltalegames.com/forums/showthread.php?t=29368

If those fixes aren't working for you, please reply to this thread and let me know me know what kind of hardware or software security your system is using. I need the following information:

1: Are you using a software firewall? If so, have you allowed access to the game?

2: Do you have anti-virus software? If so, who makes it? Is it up to date? Is it blocking access to our game?

3: Does the game work if you run it while disconnected from the Internet?

I don't need DXDiag information or any other system specific info apart from the information requested above. Please, no discussion of the issue in this thread. It's to gather information only.

    Thanks,
    Mike

How do I get a refund for this game .... I got to play episode one ... then when I tried to download Episode 2 ... took all day and then stuck on 99%.

I read some posts about this particular problem and they said they uninstalled and reinstalled ... I tried that, it didn't work. I really don't like lining someones pockets when supplied with a product that doesn't work.

I have just upgraded to Windows 8 and the game is crashing on startup for me too. At first I thought it was because of Windows 8, but then I unplugged my Xbox wireless controller receiver and the game stops crashing.

I plugged the receiver back in after game startup. There is no crash then, but the controller is not recognized by the game.

If this could be fixed that would be great. I don't mind using mouse and keyboard to play the game, but prefer to use the Xbox wireless controller

Avira Antivir, up to date, not blocking the game.

    1. Standard Windows Firewall

    2. No AV

    3. YES game works fine if I disable internet - I run Walking Dead and BEFORE clicking continue, alt-tab out, disable internet connection, alt-tab in again, then it loads fine. With internet on it crashes.

HOW is this even possible? Some insane DRM implentation? Hire some tech engineers that actually have a clue instead of stalling or pretending there's no issues like you've done since your first game. This is the LAST time I'll purchase ANY telltale game again.

I was getting this exact error and I determined the culprit to be my Razor Onza USB Xbox controller. When it is plugged in, the "WalkingDead101.exe has stopped working" error pops up. When it is unplugged, the game starts normally.

This may or may not be the definitive solution, but if anyone is still experiencing this issue, try unplugging any USB game controllers before running the game.

This is terrible. I just bought the game off STEAM and can not get it to work. Same problem as everyone else. No, I do not have an XBOX controller plugged in. I've tried changing the compatibility of walkingdead1o1.exe to every option, and I've tried installing the ".dll" fix. Nothing works. What a waste of money! I wish I had looked into this game more and read about all the problems people are having before wasting my money.

    Try this James

This is for Window 7 user
    Keep the dinput8.dll
    go to the compatibility tab
click on the box change setting for all users
    uncheck all the box
The only box you need to check is the RUN THIS PROGRAM AS ADMIN
    click ok

    Hope this help

1: Are you using a software firewall? If so, have you allowed access to the game?
    - No Firewall

2: Do you have anti-virus software? If so, who makes it? Is it up to date? Is it blocking access to our game? Ad-ware but I have turned it off.

3: Does the game work if you run it while disconnected from the Internet?
    - Its on Steam so it will not work unless part of the net.

I just bought this game today (1/5/13) and I must say that to see that the first post on this issue was back in APRIL OF LAST YEAR is rather sad. I hope this is not a warning of your companies quality to games.

Found this fix on Steam Forums:

Hello, many people have had crashes when attempting to play this game. The symptom seen is when clicking play, you get a crash in walkingdead101.exe.

There are two main fixes that seem to be working for people.

    1) find your walkingdead101.exe executable in someplace like C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\the walking dead

Right click the executable and select compatability tab up top.
Click checkbox for "run this program in compatability mode for"
and pulldown menu for Windows 98. ALso check run as administrator.

This didn't help me but the next one did:

    2) Disable your internet network in some way before starting the game.

Sounds like it wouldn't help but it let me run the game without issue.

    Good luck!

    Hello,
this happened to me a few weeks ago. I relaunched the game and re-set my preferences and of course it wasn't working. I tried one fix I found, to no avail. In the process, I copied all of my save files and pref file (though only after trying to play once). They're still my original save files though because there are 68 of them.

So, stupidly, I decided to uninstall and reinstall my game to see if that would fix it for some reason. After I re-installed, I copied my save files back and tried again, and naturally it did not work. Only later did I discover this proper fix that no longer works for me because I reinstalled.

I still have all of my save files. I really, really love this game, and I've been dying to play Episode 5, MY story. But I am not going to play through again making all of the same decisions. Is there any way at all I can recover my saves and continue the game. I'm pretty dang disappointed.

    edited January 2013
If the pref.prop file wasn't damaged your saves should still be recoverable. Please check its file size. If it's smaller than 15 KB it was replaced with a new one.

In that case you can try the "restore previous version" feature (right click, "properties", "restore previous version") on the prefs.prop in the savegame folder, or the folder itself.
  • edited January 2013
Hi, yeah, the file is only 1.49 kb. I have a backup file that's 6.5 kb. However, it has no previous versions. Thanks though. Is there ANY other way of recovering my saves?

There's no proper way of restoring your savegame.
The Siezemore fix gets close, but be aware, that it might have side effects, since it doesn't restore the prefs.prop contents that were lost.

I didn't know about this! I'm gonna try it and get back to you soon. Man oh man, I hope this works.

    Hi again,
I tried that method, and it worked, mostly. It got most of my decisions right, but Kenny hated me and didn't join me to look for Clem, though when I originally played the end of episode 4, he did join me. So that was disappointing, since I consider Lee and Kenny's friendship to be a main theme of the game, or at least of my story. But at least I played and finished it. It was excellent, of course. Thanks for your help.

I have fix that worked for me:
After fresh istall of (windows 8.Little_Trouble_Maker= game did not launch at all and didn`t even give error report.
But i noticed that if i removed Logitech G27 usb cable game run just fine.
so you may wanna disconnect all usb harware and test if the game launches. (game controllers at least)=D

Ps: Same hardware but win7 game run just fine (but f-up my saves 6 months ago)

    P.S: this is AWESOME GAME
