    District 11: Durian Everbrown

Our newest female tribute is in tears. I couldn’t blame her. She was twelve, no twelve year old has won. In fact, the youngest age to win was fifteen. It honestly wasn’t fair but there’s not much I could do.

“On to our lucky male tribute!” Atheana seamlessly glides across the stage in her green dress to the boys pool. My name is entered seven times today. My older brother forced me to despite him being sixteen and never entering his name in more than the mandatory amount.

Atheana unravels the paper, and speaks clearly through the microphone.

“Durian Everbrown!” She says. She’s joyous and excited to her own delight, the cameras quickly find me and I see myself on screen televised for all Panem to see.

I couldn’t cry! I won’t let myself, when the others see this they’ll realize just how easy a target I am, and I won’t let them have that. I can hardly feel myself move through the crowd, they don’t hesitate to move for me as I head for the stage. It was like I was floating, or an out of body experience where I realized this is where it all went wrong.

Even Atheana is somehow saddened by this, her green eyes become hollow and I can feel her try to dehumanize me as I head on. She’s thinking this because this Clementine girl and I are surely dead. It’ll be nearly impossible to find sponsors, or make allies with anyone outside of our district.

“Your tributes for this years 58th Hunger games, Durian Everbrown and Clementine Baker!” Her voice rings in that Capitol accent of hers. Don't cry Durian, you've made it this far. Just hold it for five more minutes and you can cry all you want in the train. I tell myself.

Inside the justice building I sit, it’s the richest place in all of district eleven. Regal floors, plush couches. I sit silently for a few moments, fighting back the tears. But nobody comes. My older brother, was supposed to show up but he never did. I swear if I win this, I’ll kill him, I will kill him. The thought soaks in my mind, for a moment before the peacekeepers take me out, I have no last words to say to the one I love because they don’t exist anymore.

    Lilly: District 12

When we’re board the train, I take a huge breath and coddle myself on the floor. Crying wasn’t my thing I learned today, even when faced with certain death. My district partner, Colton Traynor grabs the first thing he can get his hands on, a glass vase and lugs it across the dining cart, smashing it into tiny fragments.

Haymitch, our mentor who won his games just eight years ago, is forcedly pushed into the train cart by peacekeepers. He notices the vase that Colton smashed but quickly dismisses it, our escort on the other hand shrieks in horror at the broken glass. “Have you no manners!?” She demands an answer from somebody. Colton just storms off and I quickly follow, he’s following Haymitch.

“Aren’t you going to teach us how to, y’know… survive?” Colton hisses. But Haymitch ignores him, pouring a glass of whiskey instead and quickly heading to his room.

Colton wedges his foot in before Haymitch has time to close it. Haymitch, clearly aggravated, rolls his eyes and heads to the nearest television and flips on to the reapings that’s just about on every channel.

“Thanks, I guess.” I say unsure of what to really say. He’s an ass, but we have to be good with him, he’s the only one that can help us once we’re in the games.

District one is a gorgeous girl and a fifteen year old boy with scars spread all through his face. She reluctantly shakes her hand after the boy from one sticks it out.

“Yikes.” Colton slides further from the T.V

“The Capitol will hide that with makeup during chariots and interviews, he could still be a threat.” Haymitch states.

The boy and girl from district two are both eager volunteers. I see the excitement in their eyes, the bloodlust as well.

“Stay away from them.” Haymitch orders us.

The district three tributes are both rather scared, and do a bad job hiding it, they quiver in fear and near the end the girl nearly ends in tears.

    “Poor girl.” I sigh.

And it’s on to the district four tributes, another member of the career pact. While the boy keeps cool, the girl is a mess from beginning to end and her hair has unwoven from her braids, she’s crying the entire time.

“She’s a career?” I say in complete shock.

“Won’t be for long.” Haymitch answers.

On to district five, Haymitch fast forwards, The girl who was reaped tries to sprint off stage, It has Colton and I in stitches and is bound to have the same effect on the other tributes and Capitol. The boy is tall and lanky, like a young sapling. He has blonde hair and dark brown eyes.

On to district six. What catches my attention is the fact that district six had it’s first volunteer I could ever remember and the girl, was not too happy about it. They looked fairly tough, which Haymitch informed us could be a good or bad thing in the games. “The careers will probably target them, they’ll be dead by the first day.” Colton said, and he wasn’t wrong. Careers typically targeted the strong first while they were still in a pact so they could have an easy victory.

District seven features a tall girl who strikes fear into the deepest corners of my soul when she stares into the camera with her fiery amber eyes. The boy remains silent but tries his best to be brave.

“Another target for the careers.” I sigh.

“Hey, that’s good for us.” Colton reminds me.

District eight is nothing special, an eighteen year old boy with bright red hair and beautiful emerald eyes gets reaped and a seventeen year old girl with wavy blonde hair and dark brown eyes. But unlike his female counterpart, the boy from eight is smiling, something never seen in eight before.

District nine is very boring, probably the most forgettable district of them all. They’re both seventeen and are strikingly similar, the boy has red curly hair and so does the girl pulled back in a ponytail, both look fairly pale and weak.

Then comes district ten. A little girl, a twelve year old to be exact, volunteers as tribute. Has that ever happened before? I don’t think so.

“That girl just signed a death contract.” Haymitch says after finishing his moonshine.

“I like her, she seems nice.” I say. She wasn’t like the career volunteers from two, she wouldn’t have volunteered otherwise, I want to know more about her.

The boy from ten is different in every single way from the girl, short brown hair compared to her shoulder length blonde hair in a ponytail. An extra foot on her, at least a hundred pounds and he’s reaped from the seventeen year old section.

The girl and boy from eleven are two of the youngest in the games. The girl being twelve and the boy no older than thirteen. Both have the same dark skin and curly brown hair, and both are fairly small. My heart aches for them because of getting sponsors, much less allies, from outside your district is a very difficult task to get. The girl from eleven is tearing up while the boy tries to hold it together until he gets inside.

And then there’s Colton and I. We managed to actually not cry and look fairly intimidating, no easy task when the games are synonymous with death here, my gray seam eyes and black hair in a short angular cut made me look a little older than thirteen, my actual age. And Colton, a boy from the merchant class with his nice blonde hair that was parted to one side and bright blue eyes. I’m sure we got some sponsors attention.

    Maybe we could win this.

    NEXT PART: CHARIOT RIDES

I know I said it before but I'll say it again.

  • P.S the games aren't a 100% cannon to the actual story, because that limits just about half the characters. Or maybe they are. District 12 does have another victor but he/she is dead.

  • Great part! Good to see Haymitch, he was always one of my favourites in the books.

    1. Alara, albeit I fully admit that I'm biased here. But she was just so badass, yet adorable in her part and gave me feels. Like the rest, I also really liked Cheyenne, who gave me similar feels. While I fully root for Alara, I will similarly root for Cheyenne in these games.

    2. Fucking careers. District 2 seems to be especially nasty this time. Though despite my usual hatred for careers, I don't hate Satina (yet), she was oddly charming with her bratty demeanor and technically she was reaped and didn't volunteer. However, I am 100% certain that I am going to hate her sooner or later.

  • Oh... I somehow always forget that District 4 is part of the careers as well, mainly because as far as I know they are never mentioned to be careers in the movies (the books have been a while for me) and because Finnick and Mags are so cool...

I guess I now feel neutral about District 4... that has always been one of my favourite districts, but I can't root for careers. Though I already made an exception for Satina, I might end up making an exception for the District 4 tributes too. I'll see how they act in the games. The only thing I know for sure is that I'm not going to like the District 2 tributes.

    Harvest WillIiams: District 9

    Chariots: 1/2

I’m whisked down to the first floor of the remake center. Which is essentially a giant stable.

Honestly I don’t know if I could last much longer, the only thing keeping me going was knowing there was the meal I had today, raspberry soup with a side of chicken. And that was one of the many options, if they gave all the food from the train it could probably feed a family for months.

I look down on my dress, I’m in a blocky wheat dress in its rawest form, I couldn’t tell if it was stitched or not, I hope so, otherwise I’m going to be naked for all the Capitol to see, and that’ll catch peoples attention for all the wrong reasons.

I notice my district partner, Omri in a similar get up, a wheat suit. I walk up to him and I let out a sigh of relief.

“Well at least now we both look stupid.” I say through gritted teeth. Omri and I look nearly the same, we could be brother and sister. Curly red hair, long angular faces, blue eyes, but lots of people nine looked like that.

“Oh god, please kill me.” Omri speaks about our horrendous getup.

“Don’t threaten me with a good time.” I joke. He gives me a slight smirk, just hope that’s not the truth. He and I inspect the other tributes and there getups, some are worse than us, some are better. Take the girl and boy from one, the luxury district. They’re always the crowd favorite and this year seems to be no different, they’re both in identical silky white jumpsuits and extravagant jewels. The boy and girl from two are dressed in gladiator armor. The girl from four in my opinion, looks the best, she’s in a seashell themed dress that cascades down to her ankles. The boy from four on the other hand, is nearly naked, only some pieces of fabric and a seashell here and there prevent him from actually being naked, they do this to the older, more attractive tributes.

And then there are the bad costumes. There’s us, than there’s district seven, yet again in another tree themed outfit, this is like the twentieth year in a row, it looks nice but it’s not original, and district twelve in some coal dust and miner outfits.

“Hey Harvest,” Omri says, I direct my attention towards him. “who do you think will die first?” He asks. I almost forget, the Capitol people are so happy and peppy with there annoying little accents that I almost forgot that I was going to probably die in the weeks to come.

“I don’t know, girl from ten, eleven or twelve maybe? They’re all really young. Yeah, young, sweet, innocent. All traits of an easy target. “What about you?”

“The girl from four. She was the biggest cry baby of them all, her own allies will kill her as soon as they get the chance.” But neither of us really say what we’re thinking. Because the likelihood that one of us will die in the bloodbath is high, we’re skinny, short and weak, and district nine is not known for it’s victors.

The ceremonies are about to start. The chariots are being loaded and pulled by a team of four horses, so well trained nobody even has to guide the reign. Our horses are chestnut brown. And suddenly the opening music begins. It’s easily hearable inside, it’s blasting around the Capitol. Massive doors slide open and the Capitol people roar. There’s thousands of them lined up in the streets just trying to get another glimpse of the newest tributes.

“Remember the ride will end in the City Circle.” Our stylist advises us. “It’ll be just about twenty minutes and please remember, just stay confident.” Why do the Capitol people hiss their s? Why do they barely move their jaw when they talk? Why do they raise there tone like they’re asking a question? And why is it so high-pitched? Guess we’ll never know.

The tributes from district one head out first, the crowd goes into a frenzy of excitement. District two follows quick behind and soon enough Omri and I are placed between district eight, and district ten. District eight goes off first and without a hitch, the textile district does surprisingly well for usually a losing district, the crowd cheers. And suddenly, our horses begin to move.

Our stylist begins to scream something, but his voice is drowned out in the music. What’s he saying!? I don’t think he was done. I look at Omri. He shrugs. At first I’m startled by the cheers of the crowd, but moments later I see Omri and I televised on the big screen. My long, angular face is frozen and now caked in shades of black and bronze. Omri and I need to do something, quick.
