Most people will use the magnetic lasso and/or magic wand tools. It's surprisingly simple with layers and masking et cetera.
Personally I like the control I get with the polygonal lasso tool better... I never use magnetic lasso or magic wand.... too wonky for my taste. But you are right I think most people do use those..
Knowing the hot keys I.E shift, alt for - or +, selecting color ranges, trying to match up lighting as best as you can.... Sometimes you luck out sometimes you dont..... Sometimes you have to recreate your own lighting.
So far I do not think anyone's is horrible we have some funny folks that post here...
Everything I know I figured out on my own... im sure I do things all wrong and there are easier ways to do it.... and Im sure I use the wrong terminology for a lot of it :P
But I am either drawing, painting or editing photos in PS a couple times a day its a great hobby.
i dont like the lasso and magic wand tools, they're too jaggy for me. i prefer to use the eraser to cut out shapes, and then marry them into the background with a very slight blend around the edges

Well you can use the magnetic lasso first for a quick rough job and then really zoom in and get the selection spot on with other tools and stuff. I didn't really mean ONLY use the magnetic lasso because yes, it would probably end up quite wonky XD
I suggest you use the magic wand, I can't believe you never use it :O It has great potential!
Oh I have used them I just never do because I do not like them.
Damn, I didn't edit my post in time XD I do think they are good though, I mean yes if you use them on their own and don't really tweak with the precision settings and stuff it will look pretty jaggedy and rubbish. But it's all about combining tools.
Magnetic lasso will get you the quickest selection and then you can fine tune it with the polygonal lasso and the magic wand is very useful for changing the colours/brightness of particular parts. I'm not at all saying your method is bad but I think you might be able to get the job finished in half the time!
Probably.... But I'm pretty quick with my pen and tablet... All mine probably took anywhere from 5 to 15 minutes... If I want it to look really good I will spend a little more time on it...... When I paint from scratch I take a TON longer.... and I almost always end up re-editing over and over after I have already put it up on the net... I then have to go around and edit posts and things like that.....
Hmmm I guess I'm not the most efficient person alive. But I do have fun...
Sometimes I edit stuff after I get feedback... heck I think Scapetti may have been someone who I took feedback into consideration and edited paintings after.

Man, I do exactly the same XD but the clever thing I do is overwrite the original image file so I don't actually have to edit the post. It just needs a refresh I only do that for subtle changes or if I've only just put a picture up though. If it is a fairly big change I will put it in a new post or put "Edit: Updated" at the end.
I edited my Metal Slug picture twice after putting it up, stretching Guybrush's face and changing the 500 to be in the old MI font. But no one would have known until now :P
And hey, if it's not taking you much time then great, carry on as you were. Your edits are spot on anyway!
I made this a while back for the SA forums, so it's not using any of the telltale style artwork unfortunately - but what the heck, I'll post it here anyway!
Since I suck at editing any kind of photo, I would like to make a request. I would love to see some artwork done with Donkey Kong Country or really any of the Donkey Kong games.

(my edit came out pretty, if a bit dull)
And here's one more for good measure:
Why must you taunt me with these adorable sackpirates that I cannot purchase.
You are a monster.
Telltale, please change all of your characters into sackboys in time for the first ep
Thanks all !
