Not really, unless you like one-note characters, lots of melodrama and of course wacky Japanese high-jinks then I'd say it's pretty bad. It'… mores convoluted as hell AND ITS STILL GOING. Kojima, just stop already! We both know you don't like working on Metal Gear anymore which explains why Solid Snakes transformed into Sam Fisher from Splinter Cell!
One's where characters don't randomly fall through thin ice and disappear like some magical dog in the forest? ;_;
Kind of a tough one to answer because you have different sorts of stories games that can succeed in areas and not so much in other. If I could think of a really well-written one all around, it'd have to be The Last Of Us because it really does plays like a film [I even hear they're making a movie of it].
The game Enslaved: Odyssey to the West is pretty good too for what it did with its' storyline. The writer behind that was the one who wrote the scripts for 28 Days Later and Sunshine, but just in general Enslaved was one of the first few games that really blew me away with the way it told the story in such a human way, and this was before The Last of Us and the first TWDG even came out.
There's probably a bunch of others, those are the ones that stick out in my memory at the moment.
Planescape Torment? Never heard of that game, but if I had to choose an old good story-telling game, then it has to be Deus ex. Btw I've played a big variety of games, but I never said that I'm a huge gamer, I'm not! The reason why I put these two games is because I really like them and I'm actually attached to their stories more than any other game I've ever played. And yes, these games are recent, and that's actually good, because the chances that members here played them or at least watched a playthrough of them are high. So it will give members here a better understanding to what I think a well-written game is.
Planescape Torment. Considering the the two you put up I'm assuming you're not a huge gamer, at least of story games (I don't mean for that … moreto sound condescending it's just those two are really recent) and I urge anyone who values well written, emotional, powerful games to actually play Planescape Torment, it's old but trust me when I say it's easily the best story in a video game, far more than any other game listed here and I've played all of them (even Action 52 gulp) And it better than all of them by goddamn miles.

The Witcher 2 was probably one of the best written games I have played in recent times. The plot in that game was so complex and multi-faceted that people are still digging into it and analyzing it to this day. Characters are compelling and their motivations were pretty much always more than meets the eye, the plot itself was impeccably paced and structured - even with the impressive amount of divergence depending on your choices, pretty much everything seemed coherent and feeding into the plot as a whole...CDProjekt did some very impressive work. It's like gaming's 'A Song of Ice and Fire.'
Besides that, BioWare games, while the actual main plotlines can often be hit or miss, have always had a knack for making memorable characters - which often makes up for what's lacking in the actual plot department.
Yeah, I only came across it by accident. Best accident ever. such a shame because I think if more people had known about it, the thing would've gotten a sequel. But then, back then some of those scenes really hit me, even the animation with the eyes and just how human they looked.
I love that scene in the core room where Trip turns off the slave headband and just says Monkey can go, and instead of it being some goofy long speech of him explaining why he can't go because he gives a damn, all he says is 'turn it back on'. Goes through all that and for him it's just like nope, they're sticking this through to the end, it's just brilliant. One of the best scene in the game to me.

season 1, bioshock series, and i think black op zombie storyline is really well written and just great over all. The main campaigns on all cod series are shit lmfao. except maybe for waw
BioWare's Mass Effect Trilogy.
Telltale's The Walking Dead S1 and S2.
Telltale's The Wolf Among Us Ep1: Faith.
Valve's Portal 2.
… more RockStar's L.A. Noire.
Ubisoft's Assassin's Creed Franchise. "Though it needs more work to strengthen the overall story and the individual story of each assassin."
Make it more involved in the lore of the game. AC I really gets how to blend in the modern story arc. And i believe it needs to be more meaningful and complex. Much like the ending of AC R. To make the first civilization and the quest to understand the past more involved in the lore.
So true. But soon enough there will be plenty of good games:
* Uncharted 4
* The order 1886
* far cry 4
* The witcher 3
* DayZ
* H… more1Z1
* MGS: the phantom pain
* Dying light
* Dead island 2
* The division
* Driveclub
There are a lot more, but those are the ones I'm actually interested in getting.
Season 2 of the Walking Dead.
The Wolf Among Us.
Silent Hill 2 and Silent Hill Homecoming. Most people like Silent Hill 2 more, but ho… moremecoming is much more fun and sadder in my opinion.
GTA Four.
Resident Evil 2
I would say Cave Story. I never really focused on it's story, but it doesn't have a bad one. This game is free.
Knytt Underground
Within A Deep Forest - Free
Mother 3. I never got very far in it, but that scene at the beginning showed that it would be much darker than Earthbound.
Eternally Us - Free
Always Sometimes Monsters wasn't bad. The game play does get a bit repetitive.
In a way, Don't Starve is well written by what the characters say and how morbid they can be.
Believe it or not, opinions that make a statement of fact (to the speaker), and are not simply "I liked ____ better" need some backing up, otherwise it could just as easily be my "opinion" that the sky is green.
For instance, I say season 1 utterly slays season 2 for a variety of reasons ranging from consistent characterization all around, well-handled shock as opposed to shock for the sake of it, fulfilling character arcs even for those that ended abruptly for shock value as opposed to characters that are focused upon for a moment and then tossed aside, and most of all, a consistent story flow that never feels like potential plotlines jump ship to make room for new ones, regardless if the original plotlines met a fitting end or not. And that's just the overarching general stuff, to say nothing of more specific problems.
If you just liked season 2 better, that's one thing, and totally understandable. But there's a plethora of reasons why season 1 objectively has tighter and more consistent writing than season 2.
Comments
"Well, that's just like your opinion, man."

No Heavy Rain mention yet.

This game. I've rarely felt so disgusted and alone by a narrative before.
If you like Deus Ex then you'll like Planescape, it's another RPG considered the greatest on pc

Season 2 of the Walking Dead.
The Wolf Among Us.
Silent Hill 2 and Silent Hill Homecoming. Most people like Silent Hill 2 more, but homecoming is much more fun and sadder in my opinion.
GTA Four.
Resident Evil 2

1st season twd
Good one
I might get pooped for this but while I do think it wasn't as well written than TWDG, the narrative of the Last of Us was still pretty compelling
TWD S1,S2, TWAU, modern warfare 2, the last of us, infamous 1 and 2, mass effect 2, half life 2, and biochock infinite
Red Dead Redemption, The Walking Dead, The Last of Us, Call of Duty 2 Big Red One, many more I can't think of.
The Last of Us.
Half-Life 2.
Assassin's Creed 2.
Uncharted 2.
Gears of War 3.
Halo 1-3.
Heavy Rain.
I hate how the PS4 has nothing on it. I haven't turned mine on in months.
Only thing stopping me from getting one.
don't bother, There isn't anything good on it, or exclusive. The only reason why i have one is someone bought me one as a thank you present.
I will get one eventually. Maybe when Battlefront 3 comes out.
The Modern Story Arc in assassin's creed needs to be stronger.
What is it that you don't like about it (what parts of it needs to strengthen)
Double Post.
Make it more involved in the lore of the game. AC I really gets how to blend in the modern story arc. And i believe it needs to be more meaningful and complex. Much like the ending of AC R. To make the first civilization and the quest to understand the past more involved in the lore.

I have Watch Dogs. My four year old nephew saw me buy it, and asked me if there were dogs in it.
THERE WEREN'T!
Felt so cheated...
TWD Season 1/2
The Last Of Us
Assassins Creed series
Uncharted series
TWD Season 1
TWAU
TLOU
Batman Arkham Asylum and City
Heavy Rain
They hit home for me. Both of them. When you can relate with the protagonist in a game, it makes it that much more a rewarding experience.

i agree with a lot of games previously mentioned, so not gonna repeat them, but a few i think had great stories are:
system shock 2
broken sword series (one and two being the best)
discworld series (again one and two the best)
day of the tentacle
The Longest Journey games
siberia series
gabriel knight series
sam and max series
monkey island series
back to the future game
Beyond Two Souls, The Last of Us, Imfamous Second Son, Bioshock, all of the Personas, Heavy Rain, Stuff like that.
