The purple outfit is finally coming true! Also, two-episode premiere. Seems like they really want to get this one over with by Dec. 25th (6 episodes in total) Plus the Book of Boba Fett starts on December 29th, and they've got to make sure the two hype trains don't overlap I guess!
Cinema's are finally open for double vaxxed people where I'm at so of course I went and watched Shang-Chi. I really really quite enjoyed this movie. This is some of the best action in the MCU, and by far the best hand to hand combat in the franchise. The bus scene in particular is absolutely fantastic. They even have a couple really cool "one shot" scenes, though they go by pretty quick. So much of the action reminds me of things like Jackie Chan's work, Kung Fu Hustle and Wuxia styled movies and tv shows my mom used to watch when I was a kid. There's even some scenes involving the manipulation of air and water that really reminded me of Avatar. This felt more like an Avatar movie then the Shyamalan movie did.
One thing I really have to praise is the heavy use of Mandarin (the language not the character lol). The first 10 or so minutes is entirely spoken in Mandarin Chinese and a bunch of characters speak it throughout the entire movie. A good maybe 20% of the movies dialogue is in Mandarin. That's just really cool to me. I also very much enjoyed Tony Leung as Wenwu (AKA the Mandaring, the character not the language). He's up there as one of the best MCU villains by far. He's really well developed, gets a ton of screentime and you can really empathies with him (for the most part). I'm really glad they didn't end up wasting him.
Simu Liu as Shang Chi is great as well, though he does get overshadowed by Tony Leung in certain scenes, but to be fair, pretty much everyone gets overshadowed by him. I really like Shang Chi as a character. He's got this really kind of earnest feel to him that reminds me a but of Peter Parker. I also really enjoyed his relationship with Akwafina's character, Katy. They have some really great chemistry throughout the entire movie.
Probably the worst thing I can say is that the second half of the movie isn't quite as engaging as the first half. Not that it's bad, it was still fun and entertaining and some really cool moments, but you could definitely feel that Marvel formula coming into play. Also some the CG gets a bit iffy, but I guess that's par for the course unfortunately.
Overall I really enjoyed it and I'm glad that they didn't fuck up the intro for the MCU's first asian superhero and I'm happy that it's doing as well as it is during a pandemic. I'm really looking forward to seeing more of Shang Chi in the future.
So this movie has the (presumably) MCU Vulture, the Sam Raimi Spider-Man suit and Daily Bugle logo, and the ASM 1 and 2 Oscorp logo. What is this universe?
The newspaper at 2:00 references Rhino and mentions Black Cat which is neat.
Watched Eternals and I quite enjoyed it! Visually it's definitely one of he MCU's best looking movies. It's just really good looking cinematography and excellent CG and visuals. I really like the gold aesthetic they use, it just looks really neat. They also do a really good job with the sense of scale between the Eternals and the Celestials. The Celestials look and feel incredibly intimidating, like they're all powerful Gods, which is a great tease for what could potentially happen in the future. The movie also has my favourite presentation of a speedster I've seen in a movie yet. You get some really cool moments with Makkari, played by Lauren Ridloff, who plays Connie on The Walking Dead.
Despite the long run time, not all of the Eternals get much character development, though what is there I really liked. Each of them have their own agendas that may or may not necessarily align with their goals as a group, but for the most part they still respect one another despite conflicting ideologies. They all treat each other like family, warts and all. I also enjoyed seeing how each of them lived their lives on Earth. Phastos has a pretty sweet moment in the movie. This is also the most restrained an MCU movie has ever been in terms of humour. There'll be long stretches where it's all focused on the drama and there's rarely a moment where a serious moment is undercut by humour. The movie actually gives the characters a chance to breath. Though that's not to say there isn't humour, there's still some funny stuff that pops up every so often, particularly with Kumail Nanjiani's character, Kingo.
The Deviant antagonist is almost interesting. They bring up something I thought would get more play later on but it's dropped lol. I wish they did more with that. The movie definitely a bit too long and you can feel it by the end. There are definitely some moments where I felt scenes could have been shortened for the sake of my bones. There's also quite a bit of exposition going on since the movie is introducing an entirely new world into the MCU that will have major ramifications for the future. The mid and after credits scenes are also pretty wild and they pull some fuckin' deep cuts that had me go "WHOOOO???"
Overall, while it's not the MCU at it's best it's certainly far from its worse. I like that it tries to do some different things from the Marvel formula even if it doesn't succeed all the way. I think it's weird that critics are ranking this lower than Thor: The Dark World but what do I know lmao.
The official poster for Spider-Man: No Way Home is out! Spoiler tagged in case someone doesn't want to see it lol.
Nice. So Doc Ock, Goblin, Sandman and Electro are 100% confirmed. I wonder who the other two will be. I'm going to guess Lizard and Rhino, so three from the Raimi trilogy and three from the ASM duology.
Despite the fact that I've steeled myself to not watch it under any circumstances...
The lack of Tobey or Andrew here is a bit concerning for what the next trailer might show.
While I'd personally want their inclusion (which is definitely happening) to be hidden until the movie, I can't help but think Sony is really dropping the ball marketing-wise by avoiding this. If this movie wants to go really big, it needs to go BIG in marketing. Plenty of the casual Marvel fans I'm sure would flock to the theatres if they were confirmed to be in the film. Word of mouth might do it, but it's weird seeing Sony so restrained so far. They are definitely the kind of company who would want major pre-sale ticket numbers.
I can only hope there's some sort of brief tease of other Spideys in the next trailer to somewhat confirm this supposedly badly-kept secret.
Wait!! This is still just the teaser poster, right? Like these ones
There's still hope the final, big marketing poster comes out later... most likely as soon as the movie comes out haha. (Since he's masked here, and they definitely need to show Holland's face every time)
I'm almost certain that the actual non-teaser trailer will have Tobey and Andrew pop up at the end or something. I don't see Sony having the restraint to hide them until the movies release especially how big of a reveal that would be. Hell, they couldn't help but put Michael Keaton in the teaser trailer for Morbius.
Wait!! This is still just the teaser poster, right? Like these ones
Yeah I'm pretty sure it's a teaser poster. I assume we're still going to get the poster with the floating heads.

Currently we are 39 Days from the release of No Way Home. And we just got the first poster. Wild.

in terms of filmmaking its super amateurish in everything but the fully CGI sequences, score and performances (jesus christ pull the camera back JON), and as a spider-man story its the polar opposite of what i consider spider-man's character to be. not quite character assassination but still not great.
but i definitely don't hate it, I'm just completely indifferent to it.
From what I've heard there are two leaked pictures that each confirm one major casting rumor.
(Someone posted them as a troll thinking it was a photoshop. Buuuut the swift presence of Disney Assassins basically confirms it is not.)

I'd be very surprised if anyone from the mainline MCU timeline dies for good in this one. It's marketing speak.
If they do, who's to say Doctor Strange can't help with reversing that?
I'm more interested in this comment by Holland near-confirming what everyone wants...
"Everyone puts their trousers on in the same way in the morning," Holland told Total Film. "It was interesting having those guys come in because they have a certain ownership over Spider-Man in their own way, and..." At this point, the actor paused. "I’m talking about Alfred [Molina as Doc Ock] and Jamie [Foxx as Electro] and those guys.
Sure, Tom. It's the villains who have a unique ownership over Spider-Man.
They are gonna pull a TLOU2 on us, aren't they? I'm getting less excited and I am not ok with that.

not every dramatic and dark story is "pulling a TLOU2", it just means the movie will probably have actual stakes and consequences and dramatic tension, like the good spider-man movies have.

This is exactly the same thing Neil Druckmann described The Last of Us Part 2
It's similar, yeah, though in this case it's the headlining actor saying It rather than the Director.
I'm sure Jon Watts isn't going to make this movie "Spider-Man torture porn", given that he usually goes for "coming-of-age film in an era of superheroes" and if it comes down to it, I doubt the execs at Sony are thaaat stupid enough to bring back the fan-favourite Tobey and Andrew's Spider-men (if they're there at all), only to kill them off, or even then -- in an unceremonious way.
The thing that scares me the most is that he said
"What people will be really surprised about is that it's not fun, this film," Hollan… mored said.
This is exactly the same thing Neil Druckmann described The Last of Us Part 2. And it didn't end well for me.
Someone posted them as a troll thinking it was a photoshop.
Their reasoning for it is hilarious. They said they thought it was fake because of the lighting on a certain character's dick... On a live stream too. lmao

Pretty much everyone else has said what I was gonna say, but honestly I'm curious to see what that will be like. We've gotten a few dark Spider-Man storylines in the comics, so it will be interesting to see how dark it gets.

Spider-Man: Freshmen Year, an animated series set in the MCU that will explore Peter's early days as Spider-Man, so it looks like it will set before he got recruited by Iron Man in Civil War. Looks like we'll finally be getting to see Uncle Ben die again! Thank fuck, I guess this means Sony isn't pulling everyone's favourite wallcrawler from the MCU.
A Marvel Zombies animated series, which hasn't been made clear what it will be about but I assume will take place after the events of the What If? episode. I hope they let this one go a bit further in terms of violence, that'd be neat to see. Also calm down on the jokes.
Not MCU related, but Marvel nonetheless, X-Men '97, a revival of the 90's X-Men: The Animated Series! The creator of the original series talked about wanting to pitch a revival to Disney a couple years ago so it's great to see that they actually gave him the go ahead. It will be a direct follow up and feature most of the same cast.
Also got some of first looks at Moon Knight, She-Hulk and Ms. Marvel! No official links so I had to post these reposts from some other channel.
Again, not MCU but based on a Marvel property is Baymax! Looks like the series will be more slice of life than superhero-y, with Baymax helping people out.
The Spider-Man annoucnement is definitely the coolest of them, due to the legal reasons.
Disney has the TV rights to the character, but Sony has the film rights and specific character design rights.
I wonder if they'll have allowed the use of Tom Holland and the movie-accurate suit this time, since Marvel Studios had to skirt around that in What If.
I'm not familiar with Moon Knight at all, but I was surprised with how dark and psychologically spooky it looked like. Also Bri'ish Oscar Isaac I think.
Marvel Zombies is also very interesting. The internet says that they're using the old Comics logo, so it could be its own continuity unrelated to What If (personally I would like that, I didn't particularly like the episode too much), or it is related, and it's a placeholder (She-Hulk originally had a comics-accurate logo, but they just revealed it's different now, so...
The rest is cool stuff to get hyped for, though I'm wondering why Moon Knight and She-Hulk were shown as "Coming Soon", and then right after that we've got Ms. Marvel coming in with a definitive "Summer 2022" date. Huh? Are those supposed to be "soon before", or "soon after"?
I bet the X-Men '97 will have some sneaky relation to the usual MCU stuff. They kept claiming that What If was its own anthology thing, and yet it sort of connects to Loki, eventually became an over-arching plot, and I think it's very likely a live-action Captain Carter is going to happen. It'll be under the Marvel Studios banner, and I don't think they've really done a "separate continuity" thing in the past, though a bit with What If.
ANYWAY... I'm glad What If seems to have been such a success. There's so much new MCU animated content that's coming in the future, and that's really awesome!
Some new stuff got announced today!

Since it's a prequel he'll probably be using the homemade suit which was created for Civil War so that might not be too much of an issue. As for the voice yeah I wonder if Tom Holland will do the voice or if they'll get the guy who voiced him in What If?.

Both of them will be releasing before Ms. Marvel afaik. Ms Marvel would be the Loki of 2022, whereas the other 2 will be the WandaVision and the FATWS, time schedule speaking.
Unrelated note. Loved everything about the announcements yesterday except the new shehulk logo. What is this, General Hospital? The first Shehulk logo was vaaaastly superior.

The show's supposed to be legal comedy/drama so I guess the new logo is supposed to be reminiscent of stuff like that. I do like the previous logo more, I'm sure there could have been a nice middleground.

Villain iconography: Doc Ock claws, Green Goblin bomb, Electro's lightning bolt in the corner, and on the other side... a Sandman hand!
Edit: Also new images! Could mean a trailer is on the horizon.

If they do, who's to say Doctor Strange can't help with reversing that?
I'm more interested in this comment by Holland near-confirming what everyone wants...
Sure, Tom. It's the villains who have a unique ownership over Spider-Man.

The thing that scares me the most is that he said
This is exactly the same thing Neil Druckmann described The Last of Us Part 2. And it didn't end well for me.
not every dramatic and dark story is "pulling a TLOU2", it just means the movie will probably have actual stakes and consequences and dramatic tension, like the good spider-man movies have.
Again what I mentioned above
Getting a lot of Boss Baby vibes from No Way Home.
There's no way they'll make me cry harder than Marley & Me.
Marley & Me held the record for most amount of tears stolen from me for years, but then I watched Coco and that movie fuckin' destroyed me.
I still haven't watched that... or Luca. Maybe I'll do one, then the other for a tear-dryer hehe.
i get boss baby vibes from everything in my life. i am the boss baby.
Some new stuff got announced today!
Allegedly
A fan event for the trailer? Must mean it's gonna be massive (and have all the spoilers).
Further reason for me to avoid it as much as I can.
The show's supposed to be legal comedy/drama so I guess the new logo is supposed to be reminiscent of stuff like that. I do like the previous logo more, I'm sure there could have been a nice middleground.
Another... official new poster?
Marvel Source
I wonder, if tomorrow's trailer has the big stuff in it, there'll be a third new poster.
