Hmm, I'm really trying but I can't see it. Where exactly do you see it? (I'm hoping that I am just missing it, because that would be cool if LeChuck was hidden in there somewhere!)

Directly to the right of mast, right below the tied up rope I can see what looks like eyes.

I'm sure LeChuck is looming behind in the smoke somewhere! :)

Great work mr Purcell! you're my hero!

    Compare to his previous ones:

Fixed for a more accurate comparison :p

Sorry that as of right now all I've got is a wacky cell phone camera shot of one of the prints taken from the PAX show floor. We'll have a fancier look at the art next week. We're all crazy about it and couldn't wait to show it off at PAX (where prints have been flying off the shelves), but the downside to that is that we haven't got anyone around in the office to post it for you guys to see close up.

As long as you let me buy one of those prints before they're sold out, if not, I'll have to buy a ship, a plank, and then make you walk it

don't you have a decent camera with you when visiting cons? i mean cellpone is fine, but you need at least on person to take proper pictures for the official documentation..

..anyway, did i mention i need one of these prints. if you won't sell any in the store, that would be like taking a huge pile of money and...uhm...throwing it away or something.

    Good grief.

Um, I love Bill Tiller's artwork, indeed, and the whole look of CMI and TOMI. (Wasn't too keen on EFMI, but that was mainly because it looked so lo-res.)

Fair enough, but you were pretty hard on the offensive and I felt you deserved a stern reply as you were dishing out some pretty stern comments.

I'm really happy to see a high-res version out now that we can see more clearly. I really do like it, and I don't really mind the lack of LeChuck. I do kind of wish we could see DeSinge or LeFlay on it somewhere though. I'm guessing it's based a bit off of the intro. I'll be curious to see what Ryan does too as long as he lays off the orange-pink color scheme. I'm really very happy I pre-ordered.

I wanted to snag two copies, but there was so much going on...I didn't have a chance too. Personaly my opinion is this, It's an amazinf piece of artwork. I think it's one of the best MI covers, of course my all time fave is II. This one is second best. Thats just me though.

    What a disappointment, guys...
Purcell is a great artist, just look at his previous works (e.i.:MI1 cover, MI2 cover, Sam&Max HTR cover, etc...) and compare them to TOMI cover.
It's just too empty, and don't say to me that he couldn't draw anything else because it would have benn spoiler: then MI1 and MI2 covers? They're FULL of spoilers, but nobody ever complained! He could at least have drawn LeChuck and De Singe.
    Less inspired cover ever.

The skill of the painter is evident in all 3 covers, but unfortunatley (as ThunderPeel2001 says) the ToMI cover is really lacking. Lechuck's face in a green cloud swirling around behind the lettering to represent the pox. Morgan LeFlay and Guybrush crossing swords behind Elaine mirrored by the smoking Monkey battling De Singe's robot Monkey. All these are quick ideas that would (imo) really liven up the scene without giving any major spoilers.

    Sorry, but I agree.

Steve is a genius, this cover is nothing if compared to his other works...

I'm not too sure if I'm just seeing things, but look at the upper right corner near the clouds and star at it a little. You can almost make out a face and it kind of looks like human LeChuck.
    I think that's just pareidolia.

Anyway, I'll wait with judging this piece of art until I'm holding that DVD case in my hands, with logo and all. I think it'll look swell. :)

I don't get what you guys are talking about? Illustration is amazing!
Really, is there any way to get this special-edition cover, even if I was too late to pre-order the season (I'd gladly pay more for it)?

I talk about a confrontation with other Purcell works, they are MUCH MUCH better than the TOMI cover, no way about this...the first two covers of MI are an example of what I'm saying, but have you ever seen his Monkey Island Movie project-art ? They were amazing !

Purcell is a genius, when he draws about Monkey Island I expect to see THE BEST, and this is...pretty good, and no more. Where are LeChuck ? De Singe ? The sense of menace ? Of epic ?

Change one or two details, ad this could be the cover of EVERY monkey island...

I like the new illustration, I think it´s very good, but I agree with the people who says that the MI & MI2 covers were better. Anyway, as Haggis have said, with the Tales of MI logo on it the paint will look better.

P.S. I want a print of this in the store, please!!

Sorry to be a negative Nancy, but I too must hop aboard the "not impressed" wagon. I am a huge fan of Steves artwork, from game covers, concept art to sketches. I have to agree with people that the TOMI covert art is void of any soul, Guybrush and Elaine are raped of their personality and the monkey with the Sai and a pipe.. that shows us that this game is such a FUNNY game!

Its like when Lucas made SoMI:SE .. they went overboard on the art and made it look stupid, just so people realised it was a comic game. Part of Monkey islands humour/charm was that it art style wasnt OTT silly funny. But thats another topic.

Just feels like this was rushed and has obviously had no heart put into it. Shame :(

I agree that the cover seems a little... well, empty. All we have is 2 characters and a monkey, and except for the green glowing hand, there's really nothing in it that connects this cover to ToMI (unless the monkey with the blades and pipe will be a character ?) speaking of which, there are too many swords in this. MI isn't a fighting game, so I'm confused by the direction the artist took with this. kinda reminds me of the PS2 cover for EfMI.

    I am disappoint.

First time I ever seen the US EMI cover.. that is the most disgusting thing I have ever seen haha..

Does anyone know what the origin/intended purpose of the below image was..?

    27983368.jpg?AWSAccessKeyId=0ZRYP5X5F6FSMBCCSE82&Expires=1252351772&Signature=mlMbkv1IdD%2F70xClY8TNewpTM5A%3D

I'm guessing it is of course another of Mr. Purcell's; but has anyone got any further details on it?

An unused cover design for Monkey Island 2 perhaps? Seeing as how the content is very similar. I'd love to see a high-res shot of it.

As for the TOMI artwork I personally like it a lot but am not overly-enthusiastic about it, no disrespect to the artist of course.
As others before me have mentioned I do find it rather empty and lacking in content relating to the chapters. As a standalone piece of art though (i.e, not comparing it to any of the preceeding box art) it is a remarkable piece of work. It's only becase I am so in love with the box art for LeChuck's revenge that I find this piece comparitively unengaging.

Nonetheless, the skill and artistry involved in its creation has not gone unnoticed by me. Well done Mr Purcell: and I look forward to your blog detailing its creation.

Yet another beautiful piece from the ever so talented Purcell. It matches the earlier covers nicely.

I don't see how it matches the previous covers at all - its completely different.
And I do like it - it's a great drawing and a great style for a new era of Monkey Island. Each box seems like it was perfect for each game (even EMI, which is the worst box art for the worst game in the series - note that I didn't say it was a bad game, just worst in the series).
This ToMI painting seems to be made for this era of Monkey Island - it goes great with the game. Though I would have loved to see a MI1 or MI2 art style, it would have been more for nostalgia sake, and it probably wouldn't have fit the game as well as this does.

Glad to hear I'm not alone.

Although the new image does make it look better, it's still a very soulless affair. I'm still not entirely sure what's going on. It has the poses of a montage, but isn't actually a montage -- it's weird. Everyone seems to be looking at different things and doing different things... Guybrush looks under attack from something below, Elaine looks pretty content, and the monkey looks like it's about to attack the viewer... and they're all balanced on the front a ship. Weird.

Oh well. I still love Purcell's work, obviously, just not this one so much.

    Well, I'm with you two.

Boys, we're talking about a genious of style and atmosphere, who drew THESE :

    curse.jpg

    theendq.jpg

    leviathanp.jpg

And these were just draft paintings

So, I think was obvious for us imaging something more for a so important project, or not ??

Something with more epic, mystere, monkeys, The Singe, LeFlay...LeChuck !!!

I like the cover, but I have to admit I was expecting something... richer, perhaps? The art is great but it looks more like a general Monkey Island tribute than something specifically designed for TOMI (hand apart).

I realize this is Steve's take on the cover, though.

I got an idea: Telltale could offer two different versions of the cover, the other could feature Ryan's take on it! :)

I don't think Steve would get offended by that. ;)

Holy shit, PS2 EMI cover is pure crap. I mean, it's... pink, ehm, I mean, crap. The worst of any MI covers ever, period.
  • edited September 2009
I dislike both EMI covers. The american PS2 cover is very badly drawn, but depicts a quite cool scene, while the PC cover is a bland and generic, movie-poster-like, collection of characters, but the characters are well drawn.

IS it me, or is ToMI taking a lot of refference from those movie concepts???

Human LeChuck, Leviathan battle, LeChuck holding something that does something bad to him (a piece of La Esponga Grande???).

Kinda makes me feel like ToMI is a "remake" of the movie that never was.

I didn't do anything, it's an early version of the painting that (luckily) got redone.

I think we just been too hyped with the fact. If we didn't know anything about the artwork and then suddenly appears, probably we will praise it. Who knows?

It's a wonderful piece of art, but in fact, I think the characters look a bit stiff. We still don't get a photo with the actual colors, so, probably that make it better. But I love the freaking monkey. Both from the cover and from Mr Purcell's Desk. Smoking monkeys rule ^^!
