Man, something more in line with the artwork for the movie would have been AWESOME.

Hell, I just want a print of that stuff.

    I love the smoking monkey!

And I think the art is reasonably in line with the box art for the other games, in that it seems to depict an event that never happens in the game (unless Guybrush magically gets
    his hand back
). The MI2 cover is a situation that almost happened in-game, but the location is all wrong. I don't remember leading a pack of pirates through any jungles in MI1. The CMI cover is another battle that never happens in the game. The EMI cover is the odd one out, in that it mostly is just a collage of all the characters in the game. But I really feel a recurring theme in the other 3 is depicting action that doesn't actually happen in the game, and for that Purcell's ToMI cover seems to fit in nicely.

I'm curious if they gave Steve Purcell an idea of the plot outline for the entire season, or just enough of the set-up to give him some ideas to work with...

Pretty amazing. It's a great blend of MI2 influence along with the newer Telltale style.

(Incidently I dug out a copy of scummVM for my DS and the zoomed view on that has given me a whole new appreciation of Purcells background art. He does understated creepy atmosphere excellently.)

You must be thinking of this movie...

No i'm talking about the concept arts for the never made MI-Movie just above my post... they seem to look a lot like things happening in ToMI right now.

It's so badass. Many artists influence me to draw, but I think Steve Purcell is the only one who makes me want to paint. (Y) I've loved that smoking monkey ever since I first saw it. It gives me some nostalgia for LeChuck's revenge. Really, just the face of that damn monkey blows me back to the begining of the 90's.

Also, whats up with everyone whining about the cover being too "empty"? I find this cover way better than any of the previous ones. Sure, it's not as old and legendary as the other Monkey Island covers, but it's got much better composition and style. The older covers have TOO stuff much going on in my opinion. There's so many details it's ridicioulus. Looking at LeChuck on the LR cover, he seems very flat and kinda off anatomically. I think this cover is a huge improvement, and the only thing I don't like is Guybrush's face, but I know it'll grow on me.

It was just a joke. (PoTC is more-or-less "the movie that never was...") That picture of LeChuck being eaten by the sea-monster reminded me of this part.

    Great stuff!

    Steve Purcell is awesome.

(Whoa... way to state the obvious, eh?)
  • edited September 2009
I can definitely see how a person could be disappointed in the art. After all, the LeChuck's Revenge art is SO richly detailed, intense, dramatic, and just plain perfect on all fronts that it is the very best piece of video game-related art I've ever seen. It's good enough that I'd put it up next to any Drew Struzan movie poster.

While this art is definitely impressive for video game art, and I even like it more than the Secret of Monkey Island cover, I can see how a person can hold it up to the LeChuck's Revenge art and say they're underwhelmed.

    Looks sweet.

hey, i did the same thing, but added the lucasarts-telltale logo, and also a little effect for the art, I call it 'darken blur' :p

It looks even better with the logo. Honestly, if LeChuck was on the poster it would have to be Human LeChuck, which would be too much of a spoiler, but if it was Zombie LeChuck it would be too much of a hint that he was still evil, and ambiguity would be lost. I'm happy with it.

I just have three thoughts on this:

    1) That art is cool. I like it.

    2) Blurry cell phone pictures is not the right way to unveil art.

    3) People are reacting in this thread as if it's the box art. They're overlooking the fact that it's guest art, bonus art.
  • edited September 2009
any possibility on a 1600x 900 res? I'm getting a new desktop in a few days (I'll finally be able to play Tales properly on full settings) and i'd love that to e my new background. Monkey Island rulez!

Isn't it? I thought people who pre-ordered Tales will get a bonus DVD with THAT special Steve Purcell painting as box art.

Anyone who orders the season is entitled to the collector's DVD, the pre-orders just get a special slipcase for the DVD. So if you hate the Purcell slipcase so much, you can stomp on it and throw it in the garbage if you'd like, or sell it on ebay.
  • edited September 2009
Wait, wait- so everyone who bought the series get DVD with Purcell's cover (except the pre-orderers get the extra slipcase)?
    If that's so, I'm a happy monkey :)

    Well, no :)
Normal customers : DVD with an artwork made by Telltale
Pre-orders : DVD + slipcase done by Steve Purcell

Somebody might have said it before, but I think you could've worked LeChuck into the clouds in such a way that it didn't fully reveal his nature.

But hey, it's still a good cover.

I meant no offense, and yes... a lot of the PoTC trilogy has Monkey Island written all over it....

Aw, that's too bad.. I just knew I'm gonna be sorry for not pre-ordering it.

I would have pre-ordered it, but didn't even know it was being released.
    Yeah I know..I've been living under a rock :p

BTW..I really like the cover ;)

Couldn't resist and tried to create a 3D version of the cover:
Not the best 3D edit you can find, but still (considering it was done with only a generic warp filter). You can find infos on how to view it in the ToMI 3D thread

That's actually pretty cool, Hans. Brings back viewmaster memories.
  • edited September 2009
Didn't even know it was called a viewmaster (eventhough I apparently had one as a child).
The big breakthrough for me came with the Magic Eye books. Not exactly traditional stereography, but it started my appetite for everything 3D.

The image was made on a Zalman Trimon. If you call one of those your own, you can view the image directly in the browser by following this link.

Here's a cleaner one. It's hard to get the colors to reproduce well on a monitor, but this is definitely better than that iPhone cam pic you guys have from PAX.

That looks at least ten times sharper, and I wonder what the people hating the art will say about it now. :)

If I may lead by example (concerning strange things, not disliking the artwork):

I actually prefer the cell phone image. Really. It's a lot warmer and friendlier than the scan and I think that's quite fitting for a cover image.

Jake, is this version closer to the original, color-wise?

You've landed a bit closer, but its all pretty nitpickey at this point, I think. Anyway, it's cool stuff. I can't wait until we start actually putting the DVD packaging together. That probably starts scarily soon!

I still don't like the composition. The clarity of the image isn't going to change that.

oh man that thing is just........wow......it looks 10x better than the phonecam ones. I mean im as far from an art critic as you can get, but I like this one. alot.

I still like it..I love the colours!.
If I had one grumble, it would be the placement of Elaine.
It's hard for me to tell whether she is perched on the rails of the ship or in mid-jump off the ship...she kind of looks like she is floating a little.

And I can STILL see the duck. I suppose it's not because of a bad quality picture. The duck's just there. Period :p :D

Neither is constantly complaining. If you hate it that much, when you get your copy throw it in the trash. Burn it, I don't care. It's just extra artwork, like the posters that came with the retail copy of Sam and Max: Season 1.

I'm sick of the complaining. Just burn it, get rid of it, destroy it when you get it. Really, we get that you don't like it. Fine, but you don't have to keep talking about it over and over and over. You're driving me up the wall. starts slavering and foaming at the mouth

Men in white coats come in and drag Secret Fawful away, screaming, scratching at his skin, gone completely mad with no hope of return.

    ....

    Wakes up.

    Wow. What a crazy dream.

    Goes to the Telltale forums.

Hey, guys you won't believe the nightmare I had. I dreamed that everyone wouldn't stop complaining about the TOMI cover art and it drove me completely ma- reads topic.

Great art work I love his understanding and appreciation for male versus female illustration!

The guy in the first photo looks like me from that angle with a certain pair of my glasses on, sort of freaky...
