I'd love to narrate but I don't have a good microphone. XD

Hey Monkey, is M0ds doing Midi or Mp3 for the music. I'm intrigued to hear what he's done to fit these images. Game looks great.
  • edited November 2009
The music is in MIDI format...but trust me...it's amazing nonetheless. Very fitting I think. Secret Fawful also said something similar to me on MSN.

Michael Land vs. Mark Lovegrove! Only one shall stand.

    (It sounds fantastic.)

And there's still room for more BETA testers

I'm the second best BETA tester you ever saw

Heh...and the both have the same initials. Clearly I need to change my last name to something starting with an L so I can be a Master Mugician as well. :D

Gadesa and Edward you're both added to the BETA testers list. Should have them over to you soon (if I can find a voice for Winslow already! ...I'd give it a shot myself but have no access to any sort of mic whatsoever).

We still need Winslow on the voice-acting front. Within minutes of posting this the role was filled by Calin Leafshade (of AGS). w00t!

If you need even more beta testers, let me know. I have previous experience (both commercial and freeware adventure games).
  • edited November 2009
Yay can't wait, it looks awesome :) would volunteer to beta test, but am about to go overseas, so I'll just play the finished version when I get back!

The screenshots/art you posted earlier looks amazing btw :)

LOL, it's awesome how some of the currently most popular monkey island fans have become popular and are working on this project.

25 Nov. 2009 - The BETA release is being uploaded as I write this. Once the upload is complete the file will be sent out the the existing BETA testers. The current plan is to let them run wild with the file for a few days (Happy Thanksgiving!) and then try and fix anything that may crop up as it comes up. Once that's dealt with then we'll have a public release out to you! :D

This. So sorry folks, but we are no longer accepting BETA testers. Thanks for everybody who signed up!

You need to hurry up. I mean, you've got less than a week, the wonder what happens vid will most likely come out on the 1st of december, if not sooner.

Didn't you say you were 95% done when you announced this?

It looks ok, but it's just a sprite and two backgrounds. I can whip something like that up in Gamemaker in like 5 seconds. He's even in the same pose...

I'd like to see some more stuff in the first post, because I like this concept and I'd hate to see it crash and burn.

So lets see this released soon! Woo and whatnot.

If you`re looking for beta-testers anymore,
it will be my pleasure

On our german fanforum (http://www.miforum.de/) we build a team to make german
subtitles for ToMI (first chapter was finished at time...) so perhaps
we can make german subs for your game too...

Yes, there is less than a week remaining. And yes, the game was at approximately 95% completion at the time of announcement. And if you look now the game is at 99% completion.

The BETA version of the game has been sent out for testing. As soon as any issues which may crop up from that are resolved then the public release will be made available. So, no, I don't need to hurry up. You need to calm down. :p

You're right. It's a single sprite frame and two unfinished backgrounds. It's called teaser/concept materials. If the entire game was ready for public release then you'd have the entire game. And once the game is public I will replace the screenshots with ones from in-game.

Why do you assume the project will crash and burn just because it isn't released 4 days after announcement? Work on this project began on 19 November 2009 and the BETA version of the game was sent out on 25 November. For those of you keeping score at home that's one week from initial production to BETA testing.

And once the public release is made available there will be plenty of evidence that in the first night alone we (Ben304 and myself) spent well beyond 5 minutes working on this game.

I've already said before that this is a short game. The screenshots (mock-ups) which have been released as of yet have been intentionally provided as conceptual materials without actually spoiling the in-game experience.
    Fury wrote: »

Again, as soon as the BETA test is complete. I don't want to go releasing this project only to have a thousand PMs the next day telling me how it doesn't work.

I appreciate your enthusiasm, but I must reiterate my insistence: calm down. :D

    ^ Yeah, what he said!

If this is a success, would you do a spinoff game to ToMI? That would be awesome. :)
  • edited November 2009
The team has already discussed a potential (hypothetical) project which would be a longer, but the biggest concern is that we might tread on some (legal) toes by doing that. There was already some concern that doing this game itself might be too much.

I certainly wouldn't mind working on a more long-term project if I knew that we weren't going to get half way through it only to have Georgey boy show up and C&D the whole thing.

Further, Ben304 wouldn't really be willing (from what he's told me) to do backgrounds/new animations for such a project. So we would either have to work within the limited set of character graphics he has provided, find someone who can closely mimic his style, replace all the graphics entirely, or just beg and plead until he caves. We could always just try to convince him it's another "super quick miniproject." Worked the first time.

Beyond that, as I said, the only limitation would be legal. I highly doubt that LA would be willing to relinquish rights for a fan project, even a freeware one. Perhaps if there's enough interest we could start up a petition and see where that takes us. And maybe if LA was willing to allow us to purchase a license we could begin taking donations. But we're getting a bit ahead of ourselves here.

Let's just see how this little "miniproject" goes down and take things from there. ;)

I got to go to my sisters for Turkey day but Monkey, there is a lot of talented artists here. Im sure you wont have a problem with getting help. And who says you have to make a Monkey Island game. Why not a similar themed pirate game? Monkey Island fans are one of a kind as far as support goes. Youd get a lot of interest in any similar Pirety Adventure game.
  • edited November 2009
well, lucasarts doesn't own the rights for winslow do they?

Tales of Winslow The Awesome is kind of what I meant with spinoff.
  • edited November 2009
Even if there was a Tales of Winslow game, it would still be slightly outside legal boundaries. Telltale can only turn their heads so far, methinks.

Personally I'd love to see Monkey and Ben do something original, they have the know how to make something cool. It's not like Ben hasn't already made a ton of games.
  • edited November 2009
I think you should be careful assuming Telltale will be ok with this game. You could become a huge competitor.
    Think about it, bi-weekly games?
There's no way Telltale can keep up!

EDIT: Just in case it's hard to tell, I'm joking. That is one problem with the interwebz: you can't use a joking tone of voice. Maybe I should have added a ;) ...
  • edited November 2009
Yes well TellTale has a much larger team for their projects than we do, have the TTT to start from instead of an empty AGS game template, a higher budget, lawyers, etc. so I doubt that we could ever reasonably aspire (even jokingly) to be referred to as "competition".

I actually contacted one of the TT Staff who said he can't speak for TT or LA's respective lawyers but he doubts this project will cause any upset.

I think once you see the final product here you'll see that TTG doesn't really have anything to worry about. :p

In any case it's far from our aspirations to rival TT; this game of course being homage to Majus' amazing fan videos.
  • edited November 2009
Well, I didn't explain well enough. I thought that doing a spinoff with winslow (as example) as main character would be easier to go through with, since TTG seems more fan-friendly. I don't say you should go through with it without consulting with TTG first. But a free spinoff game... I don't see why they would lose any customers of that. :)

succesful amateur games like these are a good way to get a good reputation and a lot of people who will like this game will most likely play your next, so it's a good chance to make something new and cool

Or u can make your own new adventure game, with your owns characters. In this case you shouldnt have a problem with fans, or laws, u make your own game, and nobody will say "Guybrush shouldnt do that"... Maybe u become another Ron Gilbert :O with your own new game.... who knows!

I just finished testing it and i can only say one thing.....WOW! The game is really well done and voice acting is awesome! I get that good Monkey Island feeling in the body when im playing this. Keep up the good work :D!

This must be what it feels like to be Telltale: a bunch of fans screaming for the next episode. On one hand your flattered that they like it so much; on the other, your just not ready.

By the way rootbeer, I'm not specifically picking on you.;) it's more of an interesting idea I thought of based on your post.

Hey thanks to some great work by our BETA testers I'm polishing up some things in the game. Being an Amerikaan as I am I had to spend some time away doing holiday thingies, but I'm back home now and ready to delve into the shoe polish. Get ready, it's coming.....
    SOON!

    :p

GEE WILLICERS! A RELEASE DATE! WE'RE SO LUCKY!

I'm putting that on my calendar.

Hey monkey, I noticed the word "amerikaan" you wrote in the post before this one. Is that intended to be written that way because that's the Dutch way of writing "american". Just wondering.

Anyway, happy polishing (which now means that the game is at 99,5% :p
  • edited November 2009
Haha [ Arj0n ] I like the way you stalked me over to these forums from AGS. :D

Yes I intentionally wrote "Amerikaan" though it has nothing to do with the Dutch. I first started using it as a parody (based loosely around the name of the Afrikaans language) of the idea of referring to the United States of America simply as "America" or as citizens thereof as "Americans". Canadians, Mexicans, Central Americans, and South Americans are all just as much "American" by definition as the English, Irish, Scottish, Spanish, French, German, etc. are all European (etc., etc.).

Further although it's not something that would incite me to arms or anything, I do have quite a few qualms with the "Amerikaan" government that just makes me that much more inclined to refer to them as such.

However, we're getting extremely off the topic of the game here, and I really, really, really, really, REALLY don't want to get into discussing politics here. This is about the game.

What? 10 days from initial production to release? What a bunch of slackers.
