Yes but not on the fly randomly. Only at specific points in the song.
iMUSE doesn't do it randomly either. Each MIDI cue has its transition points. So as soon as you enter a building, for example, the cue keeps playing until it reaches the next transition point... THEN the transition is played and THEN the new cue (for the inside of the building) starts.

Of course, with MIDI files you could easily add LOTS of transition points (like at each measure in the cue, so that you don't lose the rhythm), so the delay to the new cue is minimal. And because of the "instruments" being "played" on the fly, it sounds smooth. Whereas with audio you would have to have lots of little snippets to make that possible.

I just hope that this time You don't need Steam to buy it (I know MI:SE could be bought from Direct2Download, but that's for some reason US only).

I dno't know if it's already been posted here, but gamespot have done a short interview with Craig Derrick on LR2:SE.

I'm not talking about the transitions. Re-read my last post about tempo/pitch/tuning alterations. I'm on my Wii and can't type it all out again.

There are a few things I've been wondering about since before this was announced, I'm interested to see how they're handled.

-The wanted poster on Phatt Island was a crappy picture of MI1 Guybrush (of his 8-bit sprite, no less!) with a badly drawn moustache stuck on it. I was hoping that for this it'd be either exactly the same picture or the SoMI:SE Guybrush with a moustache, but in the end they went for a picture of the MI2:SE Guybrush with a moustache, which is...odd.

-LeChuck inexplicably has a blue coat during Guybrush's dream sequence, presumably to make him more visible against the red background. I'd say it's most likely that he'll just be in his usual red for the Special Edition, with the background in a different shade of red.

-In the same sequence, LeChuck morphs into MI1 Guybrush. Will they go for his original sprite, the SoMI:SE sprite, or something brand new?

-In the tunnels at the end, going up the elevator brings you out to the back alley on Melee Island. It's debatable whether this is just an inside gag and nothing else, part of LeChuck's voodoo spell, or Guybrush physically being on Melee Island. If it's a gag they'll probably use the original graphics (like in Curse), if it's part of the spell it'll likely be the SoMI:SE background (for the "This place looks familiar..." aspect) and if it's genuine it'll possibly be redrawn.

-What about when Guybrush says "Nice X." for any item they haven't come up with an explanation for? Is Dominic going to have to record a new line for every single one of these items? :O

-Likewise with the "99 bottles" song. How on earth are they gonna pull that off?

So glad to hear this confirmed! If done right, this remake could result in MI2 being the greatest adventure game ever made (even though it's right up there already).

I was just mindlessly browsing Google news about MI2, when I found this page:
    http://www.incgamers.com/News/21421/monkey-island-2-special-edition-this-summer

Apparently the release date (according to this page) is July 11th. Nothing has been confirmed though, maybe they just made one up. Or maybe these guys were the first to be told?... Nah, unlikely.

-To be honest, I liked the fact they chose to make the wanted sign look more like Guybrush, otherwise it wouldn't make sense for the guard to recognise him. Even the Kate flyer looked better.

-I think that they will do the same thing that happens when Lechuck walks across the web page. The Screen goes dark, or something. I think they might use a new sprite, considering how much people disliked the first SE sprite (I thought it looked fine).

-I think they will probably just treat like the rest of the art in the game.

-They might have to cut it out, or they will do and hours later thing.

Really? Most people I've heard agree LeChuck's sprite is one of the few they did a good job on.

For some reason I do not think Largo should necessarily sound like a really tough gruff sounding guy... because that wouldn't really be funny...

Why do I have a feeling Largo is going to be voiced by that old guy from Left for Dead?

I guess in order to keep the gag the same gag they'd have to use the SMI:SE Guybrush, however the problem is that the classic guybrush's looked similar enough to let this slip through, while the new MI2 Guybrush looks too different from the first.
-LeChuck inexplicably has a blue coat during Guybrush's dream sequence, presumably to make him more visible against the red background. I'd say it's most likely that he'll just be in his usual red for the Special Edition, with the background in a different shade of red.
LeChuck has a blue coat here because Guybrush only remembers him in his ghost form, where his coat was blue. Why would Guybrush dream of LeChuck in a red coat if he doesn't know that the coat is now red?
I don't think it has anything to do with the background, so this LeChuck will most probably also wear a blue coat, and maybe even look more like his ghost counterpart (unless the current Lucas employees have a different view on that)
-In the same sequence, LeChuck morphs into MI1 Guybrush. Will they go for his original sprite, the SoMI:SE sprite, or something brand new?
I guess the same applies here as for the Wanted! poster.

They will most probably use art from SMI:SE, maybe touched up slightly to match the style better.
-What about when Guybrush says "Nice X." for any item they haven't come up with an explanation for? Is Dominic going to have to record a new line for every single one of these items? :O
I hope Dom records "Nice X" for every single one of those.
-Likewise with the "99 bottles" song. How on earth are they gonna pull that off?
The 99 bottles of beer on the wall might not work out properly, they had problems with the money in the first, too. So unless they have been able to find a way to make it work, there will be a replacement of some sorts, maybe just "MANY bottles of beer on the wall".

Or it's spliced, like a navigation computer.

Not the most elegant solution, but recording 99 (or more?) lines is probably more consuming (timewise, resourcewise etc.)
  • edited March 2010
recording the actors saying the numbers and words like hundred, thousand, so on would work just fine.... I think a bored fan demonstrated something like this already somewhere.

I used to be fine with that theory, but there are two problems - one is that Guybrush hasn't seen LeChuck in zombie form at all yet and therefore would imagine him in ghost form if anything. Two is that LeChuck's coat wasn't blue in SoMI, it was clear and he had ghostly blue outlines, and in SoMI:SE it's a red coat anyway. ;)

I always thought the blue coat was to mimic Guybrush' coat to give early vibes of the whole brother thing.

I always thought the blue coat was to make it stand out against a predominantly red background.

That was me. IIRC, I calculated that to record all 9999 verses of the song you'd need just 25 parts of numbers.

IIRC, they did this in COMI when Guybrush looked at the clock tower on Plunder Island. Still cracks me up to think about it.

Or what about the philosophical discussion with Herman Toothrot where Guybrush says the names of 40-some-odd different colors to get to the right answer?

(Yes, I went through all of them on my most recent playthrough.)

Ooo exciting. Voice acting in classic mode!?? YES!!!!!

It does look a LOT more faithful to the original art though, but I suppose there was a lot more complex environment art to replicate and not as much blank space to fill up heh.

And no more idiotic hair for Guybrush! YAY!

    Audio commentary has me excited.

Yay someone remembers the clock from CMI, also, to a lesser extent, Pablo's lines about how long he's been sun bathing, that would of been recorded 12 times for each month.

I always assumed that LeChuck was blue in the dream sequence because Guybrush hadn't come across his zombie form yet (and since it was Guybrush's dream, he would only be dreaming that which he remembers; it'd be a weird coincidence if his mind's eye happened to make up a LeChuck who looked exactly the same as the current one).

It seems like if they just wanted him to stand out against the background then they would have changed the background rather than the character. It'd be really weird if they changed a character for one scene just so that he fit in with the background they drew.

Well considering that the "dream" provides a map on how to move inside the Fortress, a place Guybrush doesn't even know it exists, I think we can rule out it being just a mere dream.

Maybe a voodoo induced vision caused by the Voodoo Lady? ;)

Unless they really wanted the background red. They probably did it for the former reason and just explained it away logically with the latter reason.
